Modern cruise ships look like container ships with windows. Seems that the cruise industry is more concerned with building big, than they are with building a ship that looks like a ship, rather than a ship that looks like a stack of cartons.
@hillbillypilot No. The ship was salvaged in 1934. And was replaced in 1936 and the replacement today is now salvaged. She did run as a Hospital ship during world war 1. Thankfully had a better fate then the Britannic which never operated as as passenger ship as she intended. The Britannic struck a contact mine and sank within 57 minutes with only 30 deaths.
i love this vid...thanks,this summer i was blessed,i,m now the very proud owner of one of her lifeboats..infact i,m off out in half an hour to hunt down a halibut ...... hopefully . She lives in Scrabster Highlands.and sails the Pentland firth. i love her
Mauretania of 1907 & Mauretania of 1938. Both Mauretanias had drop dead gorgeous interiors & both had good long lives. I only wish that upon retirement that both Mauretanias should be preserve or sunk
@dimmer007 Oh yeah, much more so.They looked like ships and had classy, historic names. The new ones look like wedding cakes on steroid and have silly names like Carnival Bipolar Mania.
I have a ten foot model of the Mauretania;radio-controlled;semi-scale;fitted kort nozzle, single screw,c.d.player/horn operated by r/c.can turn in her own length!!Can be seen at Crealy adventure park nr.Exeter on Father`s day[club open day]
I wish both Mauretanias were presreve. I think Mauretania 1 & 2 should be persreve side by side with a gangplank connecting the 2 on the promenade deck
Mauretania's gross tonnage was 31,938; Titanic's was 46,328.
Also, to clarify: while Mauretania sailed on the Cunard Line, it was BUILT by Swan, Hunter & Wigham Richardson in Wallsend, Tyne and Wear, England. Titanic sailed on the White Star Line and was built by Harland and Wolff of Belfast, Ireland.
Aquitania, Lusitania and Mauritania were built by Cunard. My old dad sailed ( yes they still call it sailed, even though they were powered by bloody great big engines), in its guise as a troopship, from Liverpool to 'old fashioned Bombay' en route to Burma.
@Skeleflexcrazy: No, Olympic and Britannic were Titanic's sisters, all built by White Star Lines. Mauretania was built by the rival shipbuilders, Cunard.
The second Mauretania (2) was completed before World War II. She was designed as a '7-day boat' to compliment the faster '5-day boats' Queen Mary and later Queen Elizabeth on Cunard's North Atlantic run.
The 1st had 4 stacks, Mauretania II had only 2 stacks. I know someone who was on II during WWII as an army nurse. She describes her as magnificent and fast. Fast enough to outpace the submarines.
Mauretania was 1000 times better and 10 000 times more beautiful then Mauretania2... The same as the movies - 2nd part is never as good as first.... :D
Truth be told, however, all 6 of the lusitania-class and olympic-class all were so great that even today, they are the most rembered group of ocean liner
you really cant put one above any other of the five
which one became the hospital ship, aquitania or mauretania. one of them were but they both looked almost identical. i know lusitania didnt because it sank

The differance on the two Mauretanias was that the first had no white band & had 4 funnels. The second had a white band, but had only two funnels.

As is so often the case on YouTube, an excellent video is ruined by the using some truly awful contemporary music for the soundtrack.
