I wonder why "Enter The Dragon" was not even nominated.....Bruce Lee's legend and genius would have clearly overshadowed all these films!!I'm disappointed at Hollywood's ignorance....
'The Sting' is a good movie... 'The Exorcist' is a masterpiece. Do people still talk about 'The Sting'?... people definitely still talk about 'The Exorcist'.
@jackiescanlon To be fair, people talk about the Exorcist because of girl possessed by Satan, who, amongst other things, vomits on a priest and causes objects in the room to fly in circles. I consider 'The Sting' a better film, BUT that's my opinion, and I'm entitled to that.
It's so amazing, the only memorable thing here is Elizabeth Taylor, and it was always the same, she was such a supernova that whenever she appeared that was it, no one remembered anything else but Liz.
Again.. where oh where did this come from? I have searched all over the fucking internet for ANYTHING on Julia Phillips, whom I consider one of the most interesting people of the 20th Century (believe me, that's saying something). So she writes a scathing novel about how 80's greed and ridiculous trends turned an entire decade into a steaming pile of shit for movies, fashion, art, etc... and of course she is ostracized by the very industry she helped pioneer in the 70's.
Aside from getting upstaged by a streaker, Taylor was supposed to present with Burton, but they had just split up.
Considering that she had no plastic surgery at this point, and we are so used to looking at aging Barbi dolls like Demi Moore with Botox, fillers, fake boobs and the like...I'd say Liz looks pretty damn good here!
Pity Liz Taylor lost her looks so fast. She's only 43 here. She had already begun to look a bit matronly in the late 60's.Should've laid off the booze and burgers...Ah well...that was the Liz that was.
The Sting..truly looked like it was filmed at Universal. IT was a safe choice for the Academy...The Exorcist was a film. IT should of won. AND what was Taylor on this nite?
@UFOSPACE1999 RE: What Taylor was on that night: Julia Phillips in her book says she took a sip from Taylor's cup when they got offstage, and choked on straight bourbon.
i read the julia phillips book.........what an interesting life......she said she always had bad luck with new years day........and she died on that day........
She looked SO BEAUTIFUL this year, unbelievable, and she was past 40 in this, lovely. And the eyes, my god. I've been trying to find clips of her 1970 appearance at the Academy's, anyoone has a link?
Aw, this is so cool to see this footage--Michael Philips is one of my film professors! Last year, he taught an evening class called 70s cinema, and the Sting was one of the films screened. Tony Bill and screenwriter David S. Ward were the special guests, and they brought their Oscars in! A lot of people stood in line and took pictures of themselves holding the Oscars, including me--in fact, that's my profile picture!

I am absolutely STUNNED I found this footage!! Julia Philip's "You'll Never Eat Lunch in this Town Again" is a must-read. The years 1967-1981 are the most explosive and groundbreaking in film history, and Philip's is one of the most fascinating people I've ever read about. She will be missed.
She presented this award right after a streaker crossed the stage. None of these films deserved Best Picture nods. I thought the best film of that year was The Way We Were. The Sting has long been forgotten as have all the other nominees. The Way We Were has been iconic and well regarded.
" The Sting " is nice entertainment , but " The Exorcist " is great cinematic art , it should have deserved both the Best Picture and the Best Director Oscar
If you ever go to Universal Studios in California, the "Sting" Oscar is on display in the NBC/Universal Experience building. It looks as shiny now as the day Julia Phillips and Co. touched it. RIP Julia, you told it like it is.
I'm sorry, I liked 'The Sting' but it was completely blown away by 'The Exorcist'. Seriously, 'The Sting' is good entertainment but it is pretty forgettable. 'The Exorcist' will stay with you, whether you like it or not, because of the sheer genius behind its craftmanship and execution.
Elizabeth may not have been medicated, but I can sure tell you Julia Phillips was higher than a freakin' kite! She even said so in her notorius book, 'You'll Never Eat Lunch In This Town Again.'

@ViscountCameron lol me too but I was also too busy starring at how the yellow dress just made her lovely lavender eyes just POP out even more then they usually do.

The Sting was the Easy Choice. Just Fluff, and made the Academy on the whole look good and look like a safe choice. BUT, The Exorcist was the best film of the year.

THE EXORCIST was the frontrunner (it had won the Golden Globe for Best Drama) until, the story goes, certain older and conservative members of the Academy 'chickened' out.
it's true but people kinda catch accents, I know a friend who is currently studyuing in mexico and he speaks as a mexican! he just picked up the accent. Either way, Elizabeth is british, I know she has spent most of her life in the US but she has a british passport and Queen Elizabeth named her a Dame Commander of the british empire and you can't get that unless you are british, if only in paper. At least she is not like Madonna who has NO BRITISH HERITAGE whatsoever yet believes she's Godiva.
