He actually used a 9mm pistol. As well as that, he is a target shooter and was more than likely using target ammo, which can be very inappropriate for putting down animals.
He wanted to have a rifle with him, but his were elsewhere at the time. He also tried to borrow one from someone else.
He took his pistols to mainly protect himself, and 'hold down the fort' until the property owner arrived (with a rifle).
