This was a great show - got photos somewhere - it was at a time when New Order was still in the Joy Division transition phase. I recall the place was so damn hot and humid
I love this song, and I like how Bernard and Gillian are alternating lead parts. I love Stephen's tribal drumming style in this song, and I always find Peter Hook's melodic guitar playing so unique. I think Bernard is great. Just look at how much he improved during the course of New Order. He had to juggle singing, lead playing, and songwriting, which is hard to do. Listen to the 1987 version of this song and you'll see how much better they got.
I've got nothing but respect for Bernard, he isn't a natural singer and he had to learn in the worse possible way, with the spotlight on him and trying to follow in the footsteps of one of the most charismatic singers of our generation who he could never hope to equal. I think it speaks volumes of his courage and his love of what he had achieved with Ian and the others that he carried on and become and attained what he has. He is also a brilliant guitarist.
@Iberotimuka True. He did eventually find his singing style which was quite different to that of Ian Curtis. I wonder if there are any other "reluctant" frontmen, who were thrown into the spotlight by circumstances
Poor guys, they look like deers in headlights. It looks exactly like it was, a band without its charismatic frontman. Thank goodness they stuck through this tough period and gave us tons of great music
The guys did not have a choice. Either continue as a band or do....what?
Here, only 18 months after Ian, people did not know much about the differences between JD and NO. So you had a film crew filming them because this was the first time in the US and the buzz about them was still this legend from the JD days.
It is a case study in why Rock and Roll is more than notes on a song sheet. There is a chemistry in rock that just evaporates when one member is missing.
the song is better with Ian Curtis, nothing more. Maybe is the last song recording before Ian's dead, but still in the side of Joy Division, Bernard Summer try to keeping the songs on the setlist of new order, but that really don't work.
Do you REALLY think that? Standing around looking surly with a tuneless voice barely audible over the music doesnt equal a great performance in my book. In fact, I'd go so far as to say they crucified a great song here.

They were definitely in transition here--no longer Joy Division, but not yet New Order. Still, this is a great song.

I still have this single on vinyl with "In a lonely place" on the B-side. One of the greatest songs ever.

Mibbes they're just missing Ian? FFS they must have loved him.....
nosnilor 2 years ago
@retrospectuk I think it was good that Ian died, otherwise all the New Order music would never have come out who knows.

Stephen Morris is a god.

I really want New Order to start touring again. Maybe a bunch of anniversary shows or something. Come to NYC!!
LondonCalling924 2 years ago
you can tell from this how shy Bernard is and how much more at ease he felt when the spotlight was on Ian.

New Order is a ghost without Ian.

Ha ha, this so much BS, NO as done so much in all those years. This version sucks I agree but look what they have achieved!
ftp2leta 2 years ago 2
there is only like 2 recordings of the joy division one. new order feels more energetic.

Wow, they're right out of Joy Division. Most of the live footage I've seen is from the late 80's. It's neat to see them this early.
