  • I read the book maybe once; now I wont to read it over again; I think I would appreciate it more now!! I love that part with the brushing of the mud off her face; that is SOO romantic!! Its obvious he doesn't care about money; if he did; he wouldn't be a curate.

  • Did Eleanor really need to show up right at that moment??

  • who got married i don't get it??? i thought it was the brunnette naive girl

  • rip dip dip dip fancy as fuck

  • what is the father hiding??

  • Catherine is as nosy as hell ;P

  • What I'd give to have a guy wipe mud off my face like that...xD

  • @4:00 Good timing, Eleanor.

  • he is so sweet!!!!!!!!!!!! <3<3<3<3<3

  • @mychemfreak246 they do know and they are suspicious :)

  • @mychemfreak246 That is mentioned in the book.

  • @CataDanna I haven't read the book :/

  • could someone explain to me what Henry says at the end of the part? I understood something as 'I would be stunned out of my character', while he answers catherine's question (whether he shall or not marry a girl without any fortune)... but it doesn't mean anything to me!

Maybe should I add that I am French. Thanks already!

  • @HanaeMorii Henry says that "It would be a very STERN test of my character" refering to whether he would marry a girl for her fortune (like his father wants) or whether he would marry a girl he loves regardless of her fortune (which is much more like him). ^_^

  • @linnyturtle17 Thanks a lot!

  • I feel sorry for these two syblings who were raised in the fear of their father. It's a terror a child never gets over. That some parents use excessive tempers as tools is a horror to me. Raised voices frighten me but as an adult I have the choice to be around people like that. I pick not. Lost a couple relationships because of it but I found that my life was much more peaceful./ There sure were a lot of Edwads in the writings of this time. :) And Isabellas! lol Steph was right.

  • It's funny how they always say 'oh, it's just a little country vicarage' when nowadays that would be worth over a million, easy. How times change! Love this. :)

  • I love it. The second the general is gone everything completely changes tone.

  • Good lord.

The way Henry looks at her; I'd kill to have a guy look at me that way. So lovely. <3 JJ Feild!!!

  • *sigh* Henry kills from 3:48 to 4:00 ! I think I'm in like haha

  • I love the music at 2:26... it's as sweet as they are.

  • I love Catherine so much--she's so direct and unaffected. Genuineness can be quite sexy.

  • We don't need a time machine to go back to 18-19 century, all we need are manners, and gentlemans of course!

  • how did mud get on her face ? i swear she was above ground on a horse.

nevertheless that was the cutest scene by far <3

  • @sulaka123 I think the hoves of the horse threw mud back. It is adorable. A simple touch is much more appealing than all the sex scenes shown on tv/movies of today don't you think?

  • Jeez he's got some really nice hands!!!

  • It's kind of funny, right when the father leaves, they start to have more fun! :)

  • i totally agree

wish men like that still existed in the world today!!!!

i seriously wish someone invents the time machine soon!! he he

    lolzzzz

  • Totally agree with alexandrabak!!

  • Every lady here agrees with me that men in this 21st century should behave like gentleman as to see here and nót as prehistorical cavemen.

I think that's also a big reason why we looooove to watch and read Jane Austen stories/movies.

  • @alexandrabak I really couldn't agree more!! you would have thought we would have progressed since Jane Austen's time

  • i want one of him pleaseee nom nom nom. the actor almost looks like a younger version of jude law hehe.

  • I wish it was like this now! People were so much more respectful back then, and the dresses were so beautiful (especially most of Catherine's)! So lady-like and flowing. . .I would love to be a lady back in those days. . .

    *swoons* lol :D

  • @VivaRiaAme yeah without being able to vote or work or speaking our mind!

  • @VivaRiaAme Hygenically, I'm happy I live in the 21st century. ;-)

  • Next to Fitzwilliam Darcy I'd have to say that Henry Tilney has to be one of the best!!

  • i wish i was born in that age.... people lived such meaningful lives .....the men were soooo awesome back then....sadly most men are more like animals these days:(

mr tinley is the perfect man!!!

  • @1981nichole .. But to live in those times you needed a 'Very Good Living'.. Title or Family name.... Knowing my luck, I would have been below stairs scrubbing the floors or cooking... :0(x

  • @wenglishsal haha so true...

  • @1981nichole I'm not sure. Human nature is much the same everywhere. I think that what Society deemed as respectable is what kept men in line back then: if one didn't behave, they were cut out. Today's society is much more forgiving, I believe, and THAT is why there are so few awesome men.

  • @lijluvr356 I don't know... Captain Tilney is a jerk, and he doesn't get cut out...he's so disgusting

  • @allatraca ... In my own humble opinion, Cap Tilney is there to show just what a 'fantastic man' his brother Henry is... All that is bad in his big brother is totally opposite in Henry, therefore it provides balance... I do like Henry very much and little Catherine and not forgetting Henry's lovely sister too... Maybe his rotten brother takes after his equally obnocious father???

Best wishes and happy Easter from Sunny Wales :0)x

  • i wish i was born in that age.... people lived such meaningful lives .....the men were soooo awesome back then....sadly most men are more like animals these days:(

mr tinley is the perfect man!!!

  • When the General says he's leaving. Henry is like. SAAAWWWEEET!

  • @BeeVan19 you gotta love Henry!!! God knows I do.

  • Those lovely little looks of Mr. Tilney =)

  • Henry: "Northanger Abbey would make a very good title, don't you think" XD OMG!

  • omg..... i want to build a time machine and go back 2 centuries!!!! lol

  • who the hell is the bad guy:Tilney or Thorpe?

  • @june251979

    THOOOOOOORPE! the bastard.

  • @june251979 firstly, Thorpe most of all, but which Tilney? If you mean the older brother, pretty much, the younger, OF COURSE NOT!

  • The music is so great!

  • At 2:11 what is Henry burning in the fireplace?

  • & very handsome and charming cast i might add. ; )

  • I LOVE LOVE LOVE HER HAT in 3:00 !!! help me how can i get one!!!!

And this is by far my favorite (so far) Austen reproduction. So far nothing is left out (although is is a short book) But well done. Long live BBC!

  • @DomVig its itv mate not bbc

  • 3:56 *0* so cute...

  • the scene at 3:55 is my absolute favorite! She looks totally beautiful and he looks handsome and it's all soooo romantic. ; )

  • oops - It's the 12th Duke's son that has the art gallery and apartment (apparently!) at Lismore Castle.

  • They did brush their teeth but it was with tree bark and chalk. It says so in Lost in Austen.

  • Actually, I think they did brush their teeth then. I think they used some type of powder that they just dipped their brushes in and got it wet or something. But yeah, I'm sure it still wasn't that great lol :P

  • @17Gella so you have to bring your toothbrush with you when you go those times with your time machine XD

  • I'll do that XD he he

  • @17Gella and don`t forget to inform me if you go there, i`ll come with you!! ^^

  • Comment removed

  • Don't worry, your so coming with me!! XD

  • 17Gella, you're right toothbrushes were invented in mass by William Addis from England in the year 1780, and Northanger Abbey was published

in 1817, so toothbrushes of sorts with an animal bone, small holes drilled and bristles tied on would of been quite common by then.

But one of the oldest methods of brushing is a bit of rag dipped in salt, and put it over your finger and away you went.

  • Well, that doesn't sound like it would feel very good :P But at least they had something. And I guess salt would work, cuz it kills bacteria and stuff, and the grainy part would probably clean them. Anyway, thanks for the info ;-)

  • are you all serious when you say this is Hogwarts?

  • no its not hogwarts, hogwarts is Alnwick Castle i've seen it and its NOT this place

  • she is so pretty and he is so charming!

  • she was the most beautiful with the dirt on her face-she looked like a Harlequin face

  • Awe they are such a cute match!

  • i fear we may be about to get a little damp! lol

  • I thought they were going to go inside his house when they heard the thunder lol

  • WHERE is that castle??????

  • It's in Scotland!

    You know!!! HOGWARTS!!!

  • Henry's happy face @ 1:16 when he hears his father is to go away for a few days...YAYY...PARTEEYYY!!

    ahahah

  • "Daddy Tilney" is just wayyy too weird!!!

  • i like the contrast they used with the horses- ussually the girl is always on the white horse, but the black one fits her personality more.

  • mr tilney is avariciously charming

  • OH HENRYYY!

no one has ever wiped mud away with so much affection!!! lol

  • What are they giggling about? Everyone's always giggling in these movies lol

  • He is so charming!!!!!

  • i love how they were always giggling even though there was no reason to. :) inane laughter :D

  • Love the background music!!

  • Its amazing in those days how women had to ride sideways on a horse

  • nevertheless she was capable of racing him back! :)

  • OH MY GOSH!!!

i want him to lift me of that horse!! how very strong of him

    *swoons*

  • ughhhh side saddle... dibs out

  • At the end of the book, she is 18 and he is 26, but at the beginning, she is supposedly 16 and he is 24.

  • Actually Catherine is 17 at the beginning of the novel: in Chapter 1 it says "she had reached the age of seventeen, without having seen one amiable youth who could call forth her sensibility". Otherwise your ages are correct.

  • She looks so little compare to him...as in height and thier ages r how old?

  • If you guys like this movie and book, you will also enjoy Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte (the book) and the BBC 2006 adaptation staring Ruth Wilson and Toby Stephens.

  • From now on I'm going to smear mud on my face in the hopes some hottie will rub it off for me! haha

  • @tiffers1912 What about rubbing some vaseline down there? ;)

  • @tiffers1912 I never leave my house without some mud on my face for just such a reason. ^_^

  • henry is so sexyyyyy

  • I just love these comments! It makes me ever so gay when I read them.

  • I just love this adaptation of Northanger Abbey! It makes me ever so gay when I watch it...purrr

  • How swoonworthy you are Henry Tilney.

  • Yes - where do I find a guy like that?

  • We invent a time machine.

  • Heck if time travel the only way to get a man like Henry Tilney, or any any of the other men Jane Austen wrote then heck I'll get started on time travel machine!!! lol

  • Jane Austin only imagined and wished these men existed in all her novels, in real life it was a lot different, you might of had the odd one but not as a rule.

Watch "Austin regrets" that is the closest it got to finding a Henry Tilney.

  • It must have been so nice in those days that you could really get to know a person through undisturbed conversations and long walks.

  • gosh! part where he wipes the mud off her face = girl porn.

  • ooooooooo i sense something there~

  • Not so! That is real porn, ever much so than the nude, painted wantress.

  • aww I love how he says "I'm very glad you think so" when she says his house is lovely.

  • Is anyone else in love with the music?

  • You are not alone!

  • is the soundtrack on youtube?

  • Her cheeky grin at 1:25 is so cute :)

  • I love her riding hat! So cute!

  • omg, thats what i thought! i wish i could stuff like that when i ride!

  • It's so sweet! I love how he starts out wiping the mud from her cheek, but just before they're interrupted, he's holding her face with both hands, and her look is so trusting.

  • totally agree, but i really like the scene when they're sitting by the fire... i love the way he looks at her!

  • They're an adorable couple really. The short scene after they race is pretty perfect; even the music is sweet.

  • When Dad's away, the children will play! XDD

  • liked both the book and film, the characters in this really matched those in the book perfectly imo, tho i must say persuasion has to be my favourite ever jane austen book, and the 2007 adaptation was brilliant.

  • agree. thought Pride & Prejudice the better till I read Persuasion. The Captain's letter so romantic <3

  • me too, i love both books and P&P was my favourite until i read persuasion too.

  • I loved Persuasion too but I have to disagree about the 2007 adaptation. I thought it was horrible! The letter scene was completely rewritten *sigh* Much prefer the 1997(?) BBC version but both Captain Wentworths were very good in each.

  • tbh I love any film thats been adapted from the books just on principle, unless the completely butcher the story line. Although I completely agree with you about the letter part, I was ever so disappointed that she never had that conversation with Harville that made him write the letter in the first place, but I also loved how they incorperated the alternate chapter that was cut out of the book into the film.

  • @Bex9590 which chapter is cut out?

  • @chefb2you chapters 10 and 11, originally Anne goes to the Crofts, where she overhears a conversation between the Admiral and Captain Wentworth about the rumour of her engagement to Mr. Elliot and the Admiral asks Wentworth to talk to Anne about him giving up the lease on Kellynch. In the book Wentworth returns to the room and asks her immediately, where as in the film he visits her at her house. They then do the entire reunion and resolution speech at the Croft's.

  • @pinchyoursoul yes, Cirian Hinds as Captain Wentworth is the best and I couldn't believe they cut out the MOST IMPORTANT scene from the 2007 adaption either. That adaption was hard to watch from the beginning, but after they butchered the story line, and with her full on running about, I won't watch it. Cirian Hinds will always be my Captain Wentworth :)

  • Quite Certainly! The book is far better then the film. DareSay go read it know!

  • I love Eleanor. She's so caring and sweet.

  • so cute when henry's picking the apples...... he is so cute!

  • Tilney has such a warm smile.

  • I love how warm and sincere Henry's smile is. :)

  • The father thinks Kathryn will come into a lot of money when her parents die right?

  • The father thinks that Catherine is the heiress to Mr. Allen, since HE'S the really rich one, has no kids, and seems to be "especially kind" to her. That's also why Isabella assumed James would get some money from Mr. Allen when they got engaged.

  • Thanks :)

  • i wish i lived back then

  • uh no u don't!!! lol

  • it really depends on what part of the ladder you land on in the social status

  • True, true i'd hate to be poor

  • If you talk about the manners the dresses and the politeness then yes, and if you have the money. And hell you wouldn't want to have had your period back then! Sorry for my english, it kinda sucks!

  • True, i'd only like 2 live back then if i was rich...ha ha, prob. very unlikely, but just 2 live back then 4 the dresses....:)

  • That's what I always think about when I think I want to live in a Jane Austen novel (the monthly gift)!

    That and indoor plumbing.

    Oh and toothpaste.

  • @mea302

yeah, wouldn't it be gross kissing a guy who hasn't brushed his teeth his whole life? Or are they used to the smell? :/

  • i agree with natstaylor6687 this time period was so beautiful so much more elegant than now-a-days. Also MOST of the men and women were very respectful.......i love it

  • aww 3:54

i love the hesitant way henry wipes the dirt off catherine's face

and the way she stares back into his eyes

    just beautiful

  • I love how people weren't afraid to look at each other. Looks say a lot, but they weren't afraid to look. Now-a-days, almost everyone's afraid to look.

  • haha I love her riding hat!!!

  • i love 3:45-4:00

    katherine is so lucky :D

  • Why do we not dress like this any longer. Katharine's riding dress is so beautiful. I love this time period for fashion. So lady-like.

  • Yes the dresses are beautiful but not practical, If your taking a walk or visiting a friend it might be ok but for the every day life now in the 21th century is not, the dresses would get ruin easily and won't feel confortable.

  • Thanks for the reality check...hahaha

It was more of a theoretical thing, but okay.

  • Katherine and Henry make such an adorable couple..

    ^_^

  • "Northanger Abbey would make a very good title." Lol, how true.

  • That black top hat she was wearing...I think that kind of hats appeared at 1800s.

Exactly, in what time of the history is this story placed?

  • Northanger Abbey was published in 1817 and written around 1790 something so the hat makes sense I guess.

  • Roaarrr, Mr Tilney! He keeps getting better and better ^_^

  • 2:28! there are so many moments i love in this movie!

  • i love when he walks by with the ladder! too funny!!

  • lol 1:25 she wiggles because she's happy

  • 3:44-3:59!!!!!!! BEST part!

  • 3:45 to 4:00

15 seconds of the most beautiful, romantic, swoon-worthy television ever!

gahhhh i just squeal every time I see it! they are both sooo cute!
