I had this game. And LOVED it! The slime did dry up though. I dropped it in my hair one time and cut it out before my mom saw. It ended badly! Partial crew cut! Hahahahahaha!
I remember this commercial airing when I was a little kid (I was 8 years old in 1977). Damn, but I wanted this toy. My family was dirt poor and we couldnt afford store bought toys advertised on tv like this one. My toy collection pretty much consisted of mis-matched odds and ends, bits and pieces, that were handed down to me by friends, or found in the streets somewhere, etc. Toy commercials, like this one (and being a big watcher of tv, I saw thousands of them), only served to torture me.
I was 7 years old in 1977 and am so moved by your post, I wish I could go back in time and share some of the loot I got for my birthday and Christmas with you. Fortunately, no retroactive time machines exist so I don't have to make good on my word:D
Man oh man! I was given this game for my 11th birthday in 1977! We played it for hours! Loved it loved it loved it! The dad threw it away at some point when I forgot about it. Matter of fact, that's what he did with all of my games. : (
And thus a great shudder rolled throughout the land; the fears of a million mothers who knew, knew beyond reason just where the repellent "slime" would end up - dried and complacent, having ruined the rug.
I don't mean any disrespect to anyone who had this game when I say this, I really don't, but . . . . .
Eeeeeeuuuuuuuwwwwwww!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(I know I'd definitely say that if I were playing this. I wasn't born yet in 1977, I just like looking at commercials)

I loved this game - but the background music in this commercial sounds like a first year piano student attempting ragtime. It's a little too insane.
