Since the sites are fixed on the Mosin and it does seem to fire high right, instead of punching out the site and all that other stuff, just use a little Kentucky windage and get to know your weapon. Nice tip on the dish soap though to break down the salts.
I believe the sights for the Mosin Nagant actually aren't in meters, they're measured in a Russian measurement of arshins, which in yards translates to about 77 yards per 100 arshins. 1 Arshin= about 28 inches
@taylor1051891 After the revolution in 1917 the Soviets converted from arshins to meeters, so on the 91/30 the sights are in fact measured out in meters. Its on the M1891 that you will find the sights to be measured out in arshins.
Most of the 91/30s that were re-arseneled were resited without the bayonet so it is rare to find one that is sited for a bayonet. Also raising the front site post will not fix aiming to the right, that will fix high impacts, likely caused by using light ball surplus rather then the heavy ball it was designed for.
as soon as i turn 18 im getting a mosin nagant. i asked for one for christmas, but my parents say "it will blow up in your face!" i still want one. its a nice rifle.
I just got my mosin nagant the other day and i was trying to find a way to clean all the cosmoline (forgive spelling) but just so everyone knows this is the trunks stage theme song from super butoden dragon ballz i believe
@MILLATERYBOY Generally, the M44 is sighted in with the bayonet extended--otherwise your groups will tend to impact to the upper corner of the target (assuming that your point of aim is the center of the target).
The Magazine isnt permentantly fixed. Pull the latch at the rear to open the magazine then bend it foward, compress the spring all the way and pull and it comes right out.
Really, you have to clean the barral within 30 minutes after shooting corrosive surplus ammo? Packing up and my drive home from the range is about an hour till I can clean the gun, is this bad!
@ajohnson That's not bad at all. By the time I clean up my station after shooting, get everything packed up, drive home and get all my cleaning stuff ready I'm looking at a few hours at best. Ideally you want to clean your gun when it's still hot, that way you get more of that corrosive crap outta the barrel when it's still loose. Just don't wait 2-3 days or a week to clean it. That could cause some rust problems. But your just fine cleaning it an hour or two later, no prob.
@screamineagle91 oh it will form rust after week. i know cause it happend to one of mine lol. had a mother of a time getting that crap outa there but it shoots just fine now! lol. CLR works good for removing it
@treebark109 CLR is great stuff! I've used that before as well. These old school rifles take a little more time to clean and take care of but it sure is worth it!!
@chyorttt My bad, when I replied, I thought I was replying to my other video "Loading a Mosin Nagant" where I use 148 grain ammunition. The Mosin uses cartridges that range from having 124 grain bullets (East German training ammunition) up to the original cartridges produced in 1891, which utilized 210 grain bullets if I recall correctly.
Great vid! I have one myself. My bolt kept catching on to something when I pulled the bolt handle up after firing. It was really hard to get it up. Anyone know what that might be?
@jimgeebeme NO, it cocks, on opening the bolt, which is half the reason people complain of "sticky bolt" syndrome (cosmo being the rest). and NO, it is not a hexagonal receiver, despite the common US name "hex." It is an octagonal receiver, although this is debatable to some. see 7.62x54r (.net) /MosinID/MosinTheOp.htm and scroll down the page to "octagonal or Hexagonal receiver?"
I had recently bought a bayonet from the gun shop and it is hard as hell to fit on and i had to use a brass hammer to get it off... any suggestions on how to get it on and off better?

There is a thread labeled "The Fake Citadel Song"
We figured out who the composer was (Ken Goach, used to work at IBM, now a software engineer at Dell, found a post on a site for Gravis UltraSound Frequently Asked Questions, the original midi was made in 1993)
Alex Rasmussen made a version using 8-bit sounds from the original Nintendo.
This is a sample midi that comes with the Gravis UltraSound drivers.
one thing that might help is that you need to take a bigger brush and get the part of the chamber that the wide part of the bullet sits in. alot of times the cosmaline is still in there and once it fires it heats up the cosmoline and that makes it alot harder to eject the case
Im sorry you where right I posted my correction to early. The 91/30 was in service from 1930 to 1945. My appologies, I thought the only modifications to the rifle were the sniper versions, the cavalry versions, and the M44 compact rifle.
The Mosin Nagant M91/30 was in service from 1891 to 1945 as a standard rifle, and towards 1963 as a sniper, replaced by the Dragunov SVD, the standard replaced by the SKS Autoloading Rifle.
Can anyone please answer this question please? I just bought a 91/30 and heard that they are sighted in the factory with bayonet fixed. The question is, my front sight is about a millimeter or less askewed to the right in it's "seat". Should it be that way or flush seated in the front sight mechanism? Was wondering if I should tap it into place or leave it due to the fixed bayonet pre-sighting. Thanks for anyone's help!
Mosin Nagant 91/30s weren't sighted in with the bayonets on. M44s, with their permanently attached bayonets, are the ones that were sighted in with bayonets extended. Putting a bayonet on with the 91/30 model and expecting to shoot accurately is like strapping on a rucksack full of bricks and expecting to run at your peak speed. It is only going to make the rifle unbalanced and harder to aim with unless sitting down at a bench or laying prone.
Thanks for the comment! I've actually had great success with the bayonet attached as have others I've talked to who own 91/30s. I've found that without the bayonet extended my point of impact is MUCH closer to my point of aim than without the bayonet.
Or at least "The Citadel", it was composed in 1993 but unfortunately no one was ever able to figure out who exactly "K. Goach" was... Real name? Pseudonym?
It was the M1891 where production began in 1891. Some 91/30s are dated earlier but this is because they were built off the receivers from older M1891 rifles. While there were some 91/30s that were produced after the war, these were few and far between and most of these were sniper rifles, so I decided to use 1945 as the end date when I made the video.
The 30 means that the Russian Army adopted the M1891 in 1930. The 91/30 was directly based off of the M1891 rifle.
I have a 1926 Mosin Nagant rifle with a hex receiver. It is in M91/30 configuration, but not a true M91/30 rifle. The hex receivers are considered to be of better quality.
i second the use of windex. give it all a nice spray let it soak for a little bit and clean as normal. one thing to point out, windex is crap as a lubricant, so give everything a re-oil after cleaning.
What happens if you just don't clean the rifle? It's my first rifle, so I'm not really an expert on any of this, and I often times have no way to boil water for about two hours because of how far away rifle ranges are from my house.
Thank you for the comment! If you do not clean it, the barrel will get corroded and your accuracy will diminish, as the rifling will get damaged. Boiling water is an extra precaution I take. However, running a patch of lukewarm water through the barrel should neutralize most of the salts and Hoppe's No. 9 gun cleaning solution should be able to take care of everything else.
great video 5 stars, 2 questions with corrosive ammunition should you also clean the bolt and firing mechinsim imeaditly, and what exactly is corrisvley primed amuntion is that any different from normal corrosive ammo.
Thanks for the comment! When firing corrosive ammunition, I always clean the bolt head after shooting, as there are still some salts in the primer, however it's not as important as cleaning the barrel. You don't have to clean the firing mechanism immediately.
