At the end of you video you say the knife has an Arc Lock. Not sure if back when you purchased it Aegis was made with an Arc Lock, as far as I can tell Arc locks. Again maybe 3 years ago they did but I don't think that accurate. Their CS reps on the phone say it's not an arc lock
@1dducks The AEGIS doesn't have a Arc Lock. I called SOG and they CS rep said it's a different kind of lock. Arc has a specific rating, not sure what the lock on the Aegis has. Check the Sog site. The Aegis is not listed in the Arc Lock section
i have a question about sharpening systems. i've heard that carbide sharpeners strip too much metal off of your blade and you shouldnt use them. any truth behind that?
In my opinion, there should be no side to side play in the blade. I have a Kershaw Blur, which is also an assisted opening knife. It has no side to side play in the blade and it still opens with no assist problems. No up and down play either.
if your going to buy one get the the one without the tini blade, i cut threw a couple of peices of paper and it scratched the blade. worthless coating. other than that its an awsome blade. i carry that one for protection and a benchmade minigriptillian for general use.
@partyfrog69 Why not? The thumb stud is ambidextrous, and its easier for a left handed person to release the lock with their left pointer finger, than a right hander with their thumb.
great knife, although i did put some small amounts of Skate Board tape in some areas that will assist me when grasping the unit when wet and/or during blade extension..
@cutlerylover should I buy this knife, or the SOGzilla and Kershaw OSO Sweet for about the same price? I'm new to knife collecting/using and I do not know what to get.
I believe that SOG actually stands for Special Operations Group, and was redesignated as Studies and Observations Group to cover for their actual purpose in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia which was Special/ Unconventional Operations. Great Review though.
The one thing I don't like about my SOG is the pocket clip. I know it disappears in my pocket which is nice but because of it's positioning due to griping the knife my pocket clip keeps getting loose, and I feel it may snap one day.
Aegis= Athena's shield..... THEY MADE A KNIFE NAMED AFTER A SHIELD!?! WHO THE HELL APPROVED THIS?! i mean i love this company and their knives but seriously wtf....
i'm about to buy a new knife and i'm gonna go SOG...but i'm stuck on rather to get the aegis or the flash II. i'm really not sold either way on a combo blade or a straight edge...which knife would you go for?
i would say subscribing to this dude was probably one of the best decision that ive made. now i would go into detail on why... but i dont want my wife to see this comment so ill keep it short XP
i love the blade it jus sux with the rubber inserts are under the clip, it makes for delayed extraction in my opionion, but hasnt stopped me from carying it everyday!
i baught this knife but with silver blade, its very light and feels cheap but it is a good knife the blade is strong for beign so thin and its literaly razor sharp.i cut a notch halfway through the handle with a file between the last 2 screws to cut seatbelts or twine, the handle is still very strong.i keep it on my keychain
A good trick for closing any sog knife that locks up like the Aegis (Flash, Flash 2, Trident, etc...) is to pull the lock back and push it closed with your leg, then right into the pocket, its the fastest way to close the knife and put it away. I did this with my Flash 2 before I sold it.
thanks for the great review. i just got my aegis the other day and love it. love the blade, like the weight. not as fast as my kershaw blur or as smooth but it has that awsome cutting blade ffg, awsome. love the way it hides low slung in the pocket. compared to other folders that always show some of the knife this one hides deeper and i think that is a real positive feature. again loved the review
i left my aegis in the rain and ofcoarse the aus8 rusted i broke the knife downto duracoat the blade so the rust wouldnt ruin my blade now i am having a extremly hard time assembling it i was jus curios if u could help??? thanks

i had really high hopes for this knife, but was let down. from your vid, i notice that my safety is red.. makes me wonder if i have one that came from a sub-par run.
@cutlerylover the blade retention is just super hard and the action is crappy. when i open and close it i hear a lot of rubbing. i played with the pivot but didnt have much luck. ive cracked it open and put on my creative thinking cap. i know it might not be worth a lot of work, but i really do love the blade and overall shape. ill report back if i have any bright ideas.
The knife can be oiled and adjusted, also you make want to sharpen the knife at a greater of lesser angle. If a convict can sharpen a piece of plastic, I am sure this knife will hold an edge.
My Aegis Blk/Satin came in the mail today. After I ordered saw vids where they said a lot of blade play. Really worried me. So as I opened it today 7/6/2010 that;s the 1st item I checked. NO blade play, left to right, up or down. Beautiful knife. Opens super fast & no blade play. Im' impressed. Luv the Aegis
sog originally was the cover name for a group of civilian govt. i actually tightened the pivot screw and it removed the side to side play, while retaining the great opening speed. I think there is a sweet spot where you tighten it just right to get the best of both worlds (no side play and quick opening). I think I got lucky while tightening because it happened on my first attempt. I opted for the digi camo though :D great reviews man i love all your vids

the knife should NOT have blade play left right up or down, period! look to benchmade for a proper assisted opener, i have the barrage and the torrent, both are SOLID!
That's a low quality knife. I don't recommend it. For this money you have better options. And it has up and down blade play wich will get just worse by the time. One of the flimsiest knife I've ever handled.
I too am a knife fanatic :D I collect them and look over features, technical stuff and then try them out. I must say, in which I hope you agree, that Buck is a fantastic brand, especially if you love the woods, hunting and generally need a knife for practical use. Anyway! Good video :D
I just ordered this knife the other day, still waiting for it haha. I got the same model as you have, but with a satin blade. AE-01 i believe. I cant wait =]
5/5 on the review. Btw, along with the Aegis I'm getting two other knives and will be reviewing them. So keep an eye out man =] I'm back lol
Brada, you need to fix the focus. All we can see in focus is the table! Through the whole video! Can't even tell it's textured until you held up the magnifying glass.
i had one of these on my recent deployment. the spring that holds the lock forward got kinked and the knife wouldnt stay locked. not too happy with it in that regard and with the fact that it has blade play. other than that i liked it.
Mine has a bit of blade play after about two weeks of use. The tip is quite weak. Screws are getting lose on the knife. I give this a knife 3.5 stars out of 5. It's a beautiful knife though and is razor sharp out of the box.
@eradimatrix mine has no up and down play, over time it gets some side to side play, if you just get a hex driver you can tighten it up to your liking i believe, also throw some loc-tite on the screw and it wont budge, tip is week tho, cant deny that.
Great knife. But if you can spare maybe another 40, get a Tomcat 3. THAT is a really cool knife. If you need a serious user, get a Spyderco Police 3 G10 if your area allows for blades over 4 inches.
Is anyone else's lock starting to fail? I've had my Aegis since August and while I admit to playing with it a lot I am worried about it's ability to remain deployed and locked.
It doesn't always fail, but I find that lately, I've had to push the lock forward to get the best results, I think the spring behind the lock is starting to wear out.
Forgive my ignorance (and this may sound really ignorant), I'm still pretty new to knives, but do smudges show up on the TiNi finish?
I've owned the AE-01 with the satin finish for a few weeks right now and one of my few beefs is the amount of time I have to spend wiping prints of the blade.
Also, regarding the lock up, I've felt a little vertical play; it hasn't involuntarily closed with any of my efforts but I am a little concerned. Is there a certain amount I should be willing to live with?
most assisted knives use a coil spring or spring bar that can just be removed, BUT I dont have opersonal expereince with CRKT assisted knives other than a M4 I own, but I have never taken it apart to see how it works, I have ALOT of vbideos to amke, but if I cna find time maybe Ill amke a video takling it apart to show how CRKT makes their assisted models
@mdvvi How is it that I was able to purchase this knife from a knife store in Vancouver, while an RCMP officer was in there also browsing? If they're not legal, how can they sell them?
Im in Toronto and this has a spring to help open it i believe, which makes it illegal in canada. so just to clarify, yours came to your door without extra charges or fines?
Assisted knives are not legal to carry around. However, I've seen them sold too. I imagine the retailers get around this (*if* any law enforcement person ever come to apply laws) by advising the knives are for collections. Who knows... but just because something is sold doesn't make it legal. Also, if you use an illegal knife in self defense you could have an even harder time justifying your actions.
assisted opening knives are perfectly legal in canada and most of the USA. the only thing illegal knife wise are flippers, balisongs, gravity knives, and switch blades (deployed with a button).
I bought my Aegis at LeBaron, it's perfectly legal to own in Toronto as long as you use it as a utility knife. As the Canadian criminal code defines it (paraphrasing): switch blades have a button on the handle which deploys the blade. Since the Aegis uses thumb studs, it's actually legal despite the fact that it's an assisted open knife.
@mdvvi How is it that I was able to purchase this knife from a knife store in Vancouver, while an RCMP officer was in there also browsing? If they're not legal, how can they sell them?
That's a good question. Not all laws and regulations are enforced. Many other examples of unenforced laws exist. How is it that people do text messaging on their phones while driving their car? Sure, sometimes they get dinged but most of the time not.
In anycase, these laws are stupid in my opinion and I wish they weren't even on the books. I hope the knife works well for you. If I see for one for sale I might get one too.
@mdvvi How is it that I was able to purchase this knife from a knife store in Vancouver, while an RCMP officer was in there also browsing? If they're not legal, how can they sell them?

I picked up an Aegis yesterday after watching yours and nutnfancy's reviews on it; thanks for the info, I'm very happy with my purchase. That being said, I think it's actually easier to close with the left hand rather than the right, by manipulating the arc lock with the middle finger, and depressing the blade with the index finger allowing your thumb to remain in place with a firm grip on the knife.
Just ordered this knife, badass

crazykar3 2 years ago
Brada, you need to fix the focus. All we can see in focus is the table! Through the whole video! Can't even tell it's textured until you held up the magnifying glass.
I still love you, mano.

I hate how SOG puts their logo so visibly on every single one of their knives.

Nice knife! When do we get to see your review of the box cutters used on the planes that the government says were hijacked on 9/11?

coming soon, lol..

i had one of these on my recent deployment. the spring that holds the lock forward got kinked and the knife wouldnt stay locked. not too happy with it in that regard and with the fact that it has blade play. other than that i liked it.
blackhatch46 2 years ago
Mine has a bit of blade play after about two weeks of use. The tip is quite weak. Screws are getting lose on the knife. I give this a knife 3.5 stars out of 5. It's a beautiful knife though and is razor sharp out of the box.
eradimatrix 2 years ago
@eradimatrix mine has no up and down play, over time it gets some side to side play, if you just get a hex driver you can tighten it up to your liking i believe, also throw some loc-tite on the screw and it wont budge, tip is week tho, cant deny that.

Does the satin-finished one leave fingerprints easily?

Great knife. But if you can spare maybe another 40, get a Tomcat 3. THAT is a really cool knife. If you need a serious user, get a Spyderco Police 3 G10 if your area allows for blades over 4 inches.

Is anyone else's lock starting to fail? I've had my Aegis since August and while I admit to playing with it a lot I am worried about it's ability to remain deployed and locked.
It doesn't always fail, but I find that lately, I've had to push the lock forward to get the best results, I think the spring behind the lock is starting to wear out.
jlunit416 2 years ago
send it back to SOG they might fix it for you.

No, my Arc Lock knives are fine. SOG seems to know how to do it right. Maybe you just got a lemon?

I've actually voided my warranty by opening my knife, but I fixed it, and it's working perfectly.

ugg, that knife is so solid, i want it so bad- theirs just too much else i want and need : (

CutLvr, back that darn camera up - the woodgrain of your table is in focus but the knife is not! Nice review otherwise. Very comprehensive.
BTW, the satin finish version of the Aegis (AE-01) is currently $46.39 on Amazon (no tax, free ship).

Bought one of these for $65 at the Valley Forge Convention center, I love it so far.

cool video!
I handled 3 (three) Sog Flash-II models and 1 Sog Trident. They All had fucking vertical blade play and I do not like that feature.

Is there a certain amount I should be willing to live with?
jlunit416 2 years ago
its titanium nitrite it protects the blade and im pretty sure its non glare AKA the black stuff on the blade

How hard would it be to disable the assisted opening spring? I think you did a video on a CRKT knife and it's opening spring. Is this similar?
Assisted opening knives are not legal in Canada. ... but I'd like this knife otherwise.
mdvvi 2 years ago
most assisted knives use a coil spring or spring bar that can just be removed, BUT I dont have opersonal expereince with CRKT assisted knives other than a M4 I own, but I have never taken it apart to see how it works, I have ALOT of vbideos to amke, but if I cna find time maybe Ill amke a video takling it apart to show how CRKT makes their assisted models
cutlerylover 2 years ago
Thanks for the info. It must be another company's knife that I was thinking you had apart. No worries :) Keep up the good work !

@mdvvi How is it that I was able to purchase this knife from a knife store in Vancouver, while an RCMP officer was in there also browsing? If they're not legal, how can they sell them?
HeliBif 1 year ago
i think they are legal cuz i just bought one and im in ottawa.
t3hDRIFT 2 years ago
did it ship allright?
Im in Toronto and this has a spring to help open it i believe, which makes it illegal in canada. so just to clarify, yours came to your door without extra charges or fines?
thx!
:D
imhungry493 2 years ago
no i mean like i didnt even order it online, i bought it in stores... assisted knives aren't illegal here, just switches.
t3hDRIFT 2 years ago
Assisted knives are not legal to carry around. However, I've seen them sold too. I imagine the retailers get around this (*if* any law enforcement person ever come to apply laws) by advising the knives are for collections. Who knows... but just because something is sold doesn't make it legal. Also, if you use an illegal knife in self defense you could have an even harder time justifying your actions.
mdvvi 2 years ago
i did not know that, thanks for the info
t3hDRIFT 2 years ago
assisted opening knives are perfectly legal in canada and most of the USA. the only thing illegal knife wise are flippers, balisongs, gravity knives, and switch blades (deployed with a button).
TheHellBound666 2 years ago
I bought my Aegis at LeBaron, it's perfectly legal to own in Toronto as long as you use it as a utility knife. As the Canadian criminal code defines it (paraphrasing): switch blades have a button on the handle which deploys the blade. Since the Aegis uses thumb studs, it's actually legal despite the fact that it's an assisted open knife.

@HeliBif

I picked up an Aegis yesterday after watching yours and nutnfancy's reviews on it; thanks for the info, I'm very happy with my purchase. That being said, I think it's actually easier to close with the left hand rather than the right, by manipulating the arc lock with the middle finger, and depressing the blade with the index finger allowing your thumb to remain in place with a firm grip on the knife.

out of the two which would you recommend, full size BM griptillian or the sog aegis?

Griptilian has better blade steel and the axis lock is stronger. It doesn't have any assisted open though
