The "tape" is to handle the very small components. It is paper/plastic tapes wound on reels. The tape has small bays to store the components. So it is more comparable to old fashioned movie technology :)
The configuration (defining the movements of the robot arm) of the pick and place is done by software...
@rixed0 Not really. The components are fed to the pick & place machine via a type of paper tape with holes for transportation (like a celluloid movie) and other holes containing the components (sealede by a plastic tape).
