I also find it false to believe that this game's bullet patterns are more intuitive than the pretty pre-set patterns of Touhou. I can't say much about Cave, though, having only played through DDP and never having seen Hibachi (though, I did 2nd loop it).
I found Cho Ren Sha very easy compared to lunatic runs of TH8 and 10. We're getting into opinions at this point, though. I have a hard time believing you've played the higher difficulties or extras (Though, by virtue of being shorter, I think Lunatic runs are harder than Extra runs).
@Ultimablah I don't think it's fair to compare CRS on default difficulty to TH games on Lunatic. At that point it's like comparing a simple $5 burger stand to a five-star restaurant.
@LemGambino He appears at the end of the second loop (second playthrough) after the final boss. You don't have to meet any special requirements (such as not losing a life), you just have to get there. Still, that can be challenging.
This looks a hell of a lot harder than Touhou. Sure, there aren't nearly as many bullets, but you don't get the lenient hitbox, and more importantly, the bullets are significantly faster.
The thing about Cho Ren Sha is that it doesn't make a gimmick out of difficulty, like a lot of Cave and Tohou shooters. Cave and Tohou like to make pretty patterns out of zillions of bullets as a statement of how hard the game is--Cho Ren Sha retains the same level of difficulty with substantially fewer bullets, but at much higher speed and more intuitive firing patterns. CRS is the smarter game, ultimately, as it IS difficult, yet it doesn't TRY to be difficult.
@CypressDahlia I think Cho Ren Sha isn't hard. Only stage 6 boss and entire stage 0 is hard. Offcourse and don't mean second loop. :) And this boss is imposible to do no miss.
@CypressDahlia There aern't that many bullets or patterns, but the bullet speed is fast which means less time to react. In touhou and CAVE shooters the spellcards bullets are slow so more reaction time. They equal same difficulty except for touhou on Lunatic and Extra stages.
@CypressDahlia Not even true. 95% of Touhou's patterns are both incredibly intuitive and some contain few bullets at impressive speeds. If you're calling the random movement patterns of the TLB in this game "intuitive", you're mistaken.
And this game is far, far easier than Touhou, in spite of the randomness. Their patterns are very, very basic and simple to dodge.
The bullets in cave shooters move fast (frequently faster than these) with a draw-slowdown limit when many bullets exist.
@Ultimablah Show me one Tohou shooter that demonstrates this and I'll believe you. I've played through 11 and no game has kicked my ass harder than Cho Ren Sha.
Yeah, fills in the gap created by lack of videos from this game.
The shield feature makes it much more forgiving than most shmups (shoot-em-ups, spaceshooters, STGs etc.), which is the only reason I can actually clear this.
On a side note, this is the only shmup I've seen with a square play area.
Ah, this is the pc port of cho ren sha 68k, which was originally released on the japanese-only sharp 68000 console. I used to play this all the time, I always died at level 3-0 though (before final boss) Just so you people are aware, this is just a recording of someone elses replay, you can tell because the hi-score figure (top-right) increases together with the real-time score (top-left)
Oh no... not this video too!?
...sigh... will I ever escape all the Touhou nonsense? This is a Cho Ren Sha vid, why can't we talk about something on topic at least...? :(

How do you unlock this boss, anyways? I've watched another person's playthrough of it, and he didn't fight it.

I love how the boss's last phase creates those two whips of bullets, and just when you think it couldn't get any worse, he twirls them around! XD

sounds like you lack motivation, dedication, humility and a willingness to improve.
not to mention you got anger issues and quit easily.
sounds like his life is better, doesn't it?

I think Cho Ren Sha really likes to decieve you with its bosses. First you think, "heh, this thing isn't so bad." Then it whallops you.

@CypressDahlia So basically, they're like the danmaku version of a Final Fantasy character - definitely overcompensating for something.

Effing shite, I have seen difficult bosses in RPGs and such, but this is just over the top.
Way too many projectiles launched at you at the same time.
I love the game, though I never saw this boss, never got that far nor played it enough to get the hang of it.
