I don't know if maybe they were cut from a different cloth, but training 7 hours a day, everyday, is most definitely considered over training today. He's the best wrestler ever, but could you imagine what he would've accomplished if they were more verse back then in muscle recovery, and peaking?
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is far more a better grappling technique than Wrestling. Sure you have control, but what's more dangerous cracked adam's apples, broken arms, broken achilles tendons or a pin on your back. the gracie brother's proved this by beating countless wrestling coaches and olympic medalist in fight's and ground grappling. plus you don't waste your energy.
@thrashysludgebastard Wrestling has different rules, I will agree that Jiu Jitsu is better for grappeling but your comparing apples and oranges. Thats like saying, kickboxing is better then boxing because you can use your legs.
What amazes me about great wrestlers is that, in the heat of battle, they can quickly assess the proper technique and apply it. My mind doesn't work that fast particularly under such severe stress.
@Thedarksecret1 Cael's offensive style was unstoppable. Close matches weren't really his forte whereas Dan Gable has had tons of close-call victories.
@Thedarksecret1 GSP would easily beat Cael Sanderson in an MMA fight. Not that GSP has better wrestling than Cael Sanderson, but GSP is would in striking, plus he very good on the ground while Cael Sanderson just has wrestling. That fight would probably end in a submission.
@easternhero255 FYI Cael is a very accomplished grappler. He trains with Ricky Lundell, a grappling world champion. Yes, GSP wins that match but not because Cael is not an accomplished grappler.
@Thedarksecret1 cael would becuase they may be evenly matched in skill but cael is way bigger than gable. gable could find an oppening and score but cael is way bigger and stronger. gable wrestled around 145 cael was around 180-190
@xxdonaldqxxx He lost only once in his high school and college career at Waterloo (Iowa) West (3X state champ) and Iowa State (2X NCAA champ). He did lose a few other matches, notably in the 1968 Olympic trials and he lost once to a Russian in an exhibition. I'm not sure without looking it up, but I believe he lost six times, the last to Lee Kemp in a prelim to the 1976 Olympic trials.
I grew up in a small town in Iowa not far from Waterloo. Dan Gable was everything to every kid who put on a singlet and stepped on to the mat. We all dreamed of going to Iowa City and wrestle for Dan and being a NCAA champion for the Iowa Hawkeyes. I got his autograph after the first ever IU-ISU wresting match held in the new Carver Hawkeye Arena in Feb 1983. I also got Barry Davis, Ed and Lou Banack's autograph on the propram as well. My most prized posession!!
My 2 favorite quotes came from dan "I shoot i score, you shoot i score" and "once you've wrestled, everything else in life is easy" the second one is very true.
These videos need to be preserved before they are destroyed. The quality of this post is poor. And that is no reflection on whoever posted it - thank you for making it available everywhere! But these moments need to be preserved for posterity - not only for history's sake, not only for the sake of American Olympic sport, but most especially for the fact that we get to see one of the most beautiful exhibitions of pure wrestling skill that many kids and adults will ever see.
in the olympics they cant do moves like in collegiate levels, its freestyle, or greco. and they move slower so they dont give there opponent any chances to get points.
@cbmx780 you cant cmpare this to fred. some people just dont enjoy wrestling and while i find this more interesting than fred humor applies to every human being. if people find him funny they'll watch. but with sports only people who like that sport will watch

You can't compare wrestling to mma! now if you train a wrestler to strike, that's another story!

@racer99x this is freestyle. Collegate, or folkstyle, is only used in the US in schools. Every where else uses freestyle or greco-roman.

Is it true that Dan Gable only lost once in a wrestling career of over 200 matches?

@MrRoccoMarchegiano Tough call. He's certainly up there. Let's not forget Al Oerter. If you consider Gable's career as a coach, you could be right.
