Another lost classic from my childhood! I always loved this! My favorite part was always the creepy storm segment with Rover Joe, thank you for putting this up!
He look like the foul man from Bean Bunny movie, and he is a friend he had a fight with him. And vision are alike they did to make "The Princess and the Frog" and this is a fine idea, before "Happily Ever After, Fairy Tales for Every Childs"!
Wow, I can see the whole thing on here. This will be a treat, I don't know how many times I listened to the LP version as a kid, didn't even know it was a TV program for for a while.
OH MY GOD I LOVEDDD THIS MOVIE!!!!MUPPETS RULE I FEEL BAD FOR THE KIDS NOW THEY DONT HAVEany cool shit like jim hensen when he past away i stayed home from school i was devistated loved that man!sammy davis died the same day i rem the news ill never forget>we lost a amazing child entertainer that day!THANK U JIM FOR THE MEMORIES AND MY IMAGINATION U SPARKED WITH YOUR TALENT AND INSPIRATION!

"In a departure from the source material (the folk tale "The Musicians of Bremen"), the action takes place not in Germany but in the Louisiana countryside."
As I told Dave Goetz a year ago at a convention, "I've seen about every ghost and slasher movie ever. But when I saw and when I still see the face of Mordacai Sledge, I freak out!" Scariest face!!!
Probably a good one, as well as the one from "Happily Ever After" which had female versions of the donkey, cat and dog and George Clinton as the Rooster, wanting to make it big as soul singers in Bremen. :)
I haven't seen this since I was very, very little. I learned the original German story in high school, and I couldn't figure out why the heck it was so familiar. It's great to see it again, but now I'm amazed at the puppetry techniques and their complexity and how it all looks so natural. In fact, when I was little, I don't remember thinking the characters were puppets at all.
I had the record version, growing up in the 80s. Never seen it. Watching it now, what I love SO MUCH is how they clearly want to do some Southern dialog, but don't really know how, so they wing it. Witness Mordacai Sledge... and "put me in boots and call me a duck!"
It's so creative! and of course, "I'm a travelin musician! Don't you love me all to crazy?"
thanks so much for posting this. I see it's not available on DVD, and the last time I saw this was in 1972. I just sat and watched the whole thing (thanks to you here) and laughed myself silly throughout. No wonder the Muppets and Henson went on to greater things - the script, the amazing puppetry and the hilarious voices were superb - enthralling for a 7 year old and so much deeper. The cat had me in stitches and Leroy is a diamond.
This was shown in two parts in the uk & it was a life changing show, I had never seen anything like it, anyway to cut a long story short years later I worked for Hensons on a couple of movies as a puppeteer also the Easter special 'The Tale of The Bunny Picnic' One day while shooting, the head of the farmer was bought out for the first time & put on a table so I went to have a look, & who looked up at me but one of the bad guys from Muppet Musicians, a magic moment for me.
That's a great story, knibscratch! Thanks for sharing. The show impacted me pretty deeply as a youth, too. I know what you mean when you say you'd never seen anything like it. Pretty magical. What an honor to be visited by a Muppeteer! Thanks again for stopping by, watching, and commenting.
@knibscratch After reading your comment, I never saw Bunny Picnic. Here it is in 2011, I finally look it up & I see Mean Floyd with a mustache! Was it Mean Floyd or a different farmer?
@knibscratch Mordecai? It looked like Floyd to me. He had his wide square-like head but with a newly added red mustache. I'll have to watch again & look harder when his head IS shown.
I don't know of any donkey named Bender. Personally, I think Leroy sounds like an older version of X the Owl from Mr. Rogers. Actually, he's voiced by Nick Nichols.
Oh man, this was one of my favorite movies I used to rent at the video store as a kid in the 80's. They did show a re-run on Nickelodeon in '93/'94 during the fall which I was lucky enough to record it on VHS then and still have it, althought the quality is starting to go away.
Definitely one of my favorites from childhood. I used to have this recorded on a VHS until one of my family members recorded something over it. I was so bummed. Now I can show this one to my kids now that I have a link to it. Thanks so much!
One of my faves too. I'm glad you got to re-discover it here. I used to listen to the soundtrack over and over as a kid and wished I could watch it again. Finally, 35 years later, we can see it whenever we want!
A jackass is defined in my dictionary both as a stupid person and a male donkey. As a vulgarity, it's pretty mild, and funny in this particular context.
I'm glad I was able to make it available to the community. It seemed like the only Muppet-oriented material that hadn't made it to YouTube yet. One of my favorite childhood TV and LP experiences!
