Ive had Hondas for last 12 years all had Vtec engines and i havent a clue when people say can you hear the Vtec ? i say no just sounds like the engine is being revved, I can however feel a slight kick in the performance around 2-3000 rpm but no sound, this is a mystery to me. I currently have a 2.0 Accord Ivtec, still can hear anything, maybe i am not driving it right ?
Well the sound is very faint until you put, Intake, Headers and a exhaust on the Vtec motors. My 92 GSR with a freshly built B17a1 has a Skunk2 Megapower header, AEM Cold air V2 Intake and A custom 2.25 exhaust with a Skunk2 Cat Delete and the Vtec hits hard as hell, There is a definite sound change in the motor cause by the 4,500rpm range because the valves open and motor air and gas are allowed in.
i guess it's because honda thinks that the Si/Si-R models are as performant as the Type R models. If you look at it (civic Type R 2009 and Civic Si 2009) they have the same engine, and probably the same specs. Only the name changes (or almost)
@GTtuner56 - The Type R's have slightly different internals and have a stiffer suspension. Also the sound proofing panels are removed for weight reduction. And other small luxuries are removed. That's the difference between Si, Si-R's and Type R's .
If there is a "two-stage" Vtec, can you please explain this to me? Do you mean that the lobes can also either advance or retard depending on throttle position, speed and load on the motor?
Although the term "two-stage" is a common misconception, there are actually 2 points in the rpm range where a change happens and increases performance. But the 2nd change has NOTHING to do with cam timing or valve's. Its with the intake manifold.
My '95 gsr for example, VTEC engages at 4400 and at 5800 there is a shorter, more direct intake runner that opens and allows for higher rpm airflow.
After-market intake manifolds negate this, as low-rpm gas mileage isnt what performance lovers want ;)
Yeah...OBD1...at least I am dyno tuned on an S300! Fully building my engine this summer then going with a GT35r! I got a few tricks up my sleeve for thieves...and yes... I have an alarm. My buddies JDM teg was stolen one year ago...had the JDM B18c! They took that, the tranny and the JDM front! The car was found the next day completely stripped!
Damn, 35R huh? I haven't really done my research, but I figured even on a built motor, anything over a 30R would start having some serious lag.

Beautiful body condition compared to my beat up '95. My ex-roomate backed his ram 2500 into my Teg and punched a hole in the BRAND NEW front clip I replaced from having hit a 2-foot porcupine up a canyon previously.

Once Vtec engages, that is it. There is not another set of larger lobes that engage after that. There are three lobes per cylinder, lets say on the intake side, as well as on the exhaust side, where the center lobe is the Vtec lobe.

Yes, this "second" stage is called the IAB (intake air bypass) I too have a 95 GSR, but swapped the IM out for a Skunk2 IM.
