  • Not to mention the fact that it's 10+ minutes of some dude letting loose by himself, something jazzers have already achieved in the past (not to mention with a rhythm section, which provides limits and makes it more difficult to pull off) with more... arguably pleasing... effects.

  • These types of solos are just SO dissonant and atonal that I can never bring myself to truly enjoy them. It sounds like some random sax guy (any decent sax player... Not saying that this is EASY to do at all) just playing by himself while practicing at home or something.

Undeniably skillful and impressive, just not something I'd listen to or really enjoy.

  • Cada vez que lo escucho escucho encuentro cosas nuevos, y creo que nunca voy a dejar de hacerlo. Es impresionante!!!!!!

  • It has a lot of enthusiasm and energy. He is good musician, but not genius. Well done.

  • Science project ]]:]

  • Reminds me of Johnny Griffin in the late '50s more than anyone else, with a touch more harmonic juice and range.

  • @ phlmusic815 you should read my follow up.comment before you say something ignorant

  • I heard this and got hard... But seriously, there are only a handful of people that can attempt to play that now. Love it!!

  • Unbelievable...

  • Unparalleled...

  • So Obviously Manhattan school Students in the backround, with their "ah Ah ya man,OH ya." No discrediting the awesomeness of the playing but. Reminds me of College.

  • @sandm827 Why? Isn't music meant to be a communication between audience and performer? Would you expect to hear different if bird was on the bandstand on 52nd street in the 40's? Maybe its just hipper to act cool and reserved when you are moved by something...

  • @hermease You got me all wrong there wasnt any negative connotation in my statement. Im probably one of the most annoying people to go see a show with because I am so moved and expressive> I bootlegged a bunch of shows when I Lived in NYC during my college days at Manhattan school. Listening back I wish I would have shut up so I could hear the recordings better, LOL. I totally believe in expression whether it be musically physically or emotionally, you read me wrong brother

  • @sandm827 No harm no foul sandman. Obviously we both like good music! My apologies if i misunderstood you.

  • was guna jerk off but then i put this on...

  • @JamesCornelisonMusic ....then you jerked off harder? ;)

  • the 10 people are Harry Potter fan

  • Shocking and fantastic - a thousand stars

  • This is almost more of a classic than the beatles

  • OMG, I feel like a loser. I've never heard of him, but I guess that's why you've never heard of me.

  • simply the best

  • He is so ridiculously good that I have to laugh :D

  • I think every practice exercise is in this solo...WOW.

  • this is like the equivalent of brad melhdau playing solo piano, just pure genius and mastery that so few are blessed with

  • only reason why people disliked this is because it short

  • the Best and the Beautiful

  • i guess you have to play to appreciate this fully....

  • I am in love with this sound!!!!!

who are the 9 people who dislike this and what is wrong with them?!

Were they horribly abused as children, beaten when a beautiful sound entered their lives or something?

  • I am in love with this sound!!!!!

  • like emotional fireworks

  • btw... here's a full recording of this. sound quality doesn't seem as good, but it has the ending. .w.w.w.youtube.com/watch?v=QHYR18AJeZQ&feature=related

  • When i started watching I was surprised by how still he was playing the sax, I came to realize that yes, it was a photo.

  • @luckyd0m heheheheheheehheheheheheheehheheheheheheehheheheheheheehheheheheheheehheheheheheheehheheheheheheehheheheheheheehheheheheheheehheheheheheheehheheheheheheehheheheheheheehheheheheheheehheheheheheheehheheheheheheehheheheheheheehheheheheheheehheheheheheheehheheheheheheehheheheheheheehheheheheheheehheheheheheheehheheheheheheehheheheheheheehheheheheheheehheheheheheheehheheheheheheehheheheheheheehheheheheheheehheheheheheheehheheheheheheehheheheheheheehheheheheheheehheheheheheheeh

  • I just ejaculated at 07:45

  • Im a 21 year old guiar player, and Im going to give learning this a shot, not sure how far I'll get with it, I've already learnt about 1:30 of the peice (been working on it for 4 - 5 months) along with other Uni work. I'd love to have it down by the end of the year. As for Chris Potter, AMAZING. Learning just makes you realise how truly incredible what he's doing is, and all the little intricacies. However, at the same time its very listenable for those who know very little about music. Great!

  • @jesser101090 Haha good luck mate. There was a dude who posted on here a while back who had transcribed it. You could check that out if it would help

  • GAAAAAAAAAAH

  • Comment removed

  • I think Chris should check out the changes more... ... ... (I suppose I won't risk textually based sarcasm lol)

  • @saxoman1 r u serious, or are you jk ing?

  • @jazzmasta92 I can't tell if your attempting to troll or not (after all, I did specify that I was being sarcastic because of the generally poor "sarcastic" expressive power of written text lol)

  • 4:26 Whatever piece that's from, I want to play it.

  • 9 people pressed the wrong button.

  • the shear amount of ideas he has is insane, even before you start to look at the perfection of his execution. maybe in ten years I'll understand?

  • Puta q PariU!

  • 5:48 made me scream

  • *Wants to see what this sheet music looks like*

  • @PeaceOutDinos ...there's not really sheet music, its jazz....

  • @PeaceOutDinos bendohertyjazz . c0m/donate.html

    I know, I'm a hero.

  • @PeaceOutDinos there's a transcription of this floating around the internet...just google Chris Potter All the things you are.

  • Beautiful. Fuck that this is groundbreaking. Glad somebody's keepin' the tradition alive. Also glad it ain't me, cuz I'd be broke.

  • I could use a fresh pair of underpants right now.

  • @joeyo321 classy

  • bedlam is clearly 14-15 yrs old. this guy supplanted trane, parker, gordon, redman and any other blower you can think of.....years ago! on his disk 'gratitude' , he honored all the early greats by playing tunes in thier styles, but he is sooo advanced there is just no comparison. (check what downbeat says about potter). dave holland has only the very best players in his band, and potter is always first call. he be the cats pajamas! saw him recently in austin...ooowww!!! we're hardly worthy!

  • @bluelouise13 Okay, seriously, are you actually debating over whether Trane, Brecker or Potter is "the best"? These guys are clearly masters of the saxophone - there comes a point where you can't simply take a measure of "good"ness. They are all entirely different players, with a billion arguments for why each one is the best, but they are all DIFFERENT PEOPLE, not just better/worse versions of the same sax player. They can't just be categorised by some linear rating of "how good" they are.

  • @MattiusCN

    This man speaks the truth

  • It makes no sense to debate how great or not the guy is. He can play, no doubt. I will tell you...I would hate be try and "make it" in the jazz world today, especially if you are sax player. This guy is a great player, but he will never be Trane or even Michael Brecker. Nor should he be, nor does he have to be. But people will continue to put him down because of what he isn't, rather then celebrate what he is: a great player but not a Hall of Famer. Let's just thank God jazz is still around.

  • 8 DISLIKES?! Just goes to show people can't be honest with themselves...Although after 77,000 views, that's not too bad...

  • Chris is so crazy good. I've play the sax for 37years and this is the shit :)

  • I am soo tired of people who post comments after listening to something like this with a negative comment as if it were soulless academic over achievement such as the class clown comment. I, too, am a musician and have over the years heard this kind of BS from people who are insecure and always critique those who have what they know they can never have. Much in popular music reflects this perspective and derives from a society that rewards mediocrity; what I consider to be soulless and boring.

  • hahah damn im glad i dont play sax... id quit after listening to this

  • OMG i cant believe my ears, ive never heard anything this impressive!

  • Second coming of Trane!

  • AWWWWWWWWEsome! I discovered him off a Stealy Dan album

  • NASTY!!

  • can the guys in the front row shut up while I transcribe this!!

  • @kohg85 Have you already transcribed it? I am planning to transcribe it myself, I am interested in analyzing/understanding his ideas in the solo. Would you mind to send me your transcription, if you have one? Please, send me a private message!

  • Wow!!! Thanks for posting. Peace.

  • Dude, with youtube's new extended time maximum, you should definitely re-upload the entire solo!

  • Oh, hello practice room, Chris Potter sent me here.

  • @SupahflyJazzguy lolololololololol

  • Man ....if you need creative inspiration for practicing on a standard...Here you go.Potter takes risks and what great rewards.Just Listen without judging and you'll get it.

  • Play it again !

    Thanks!

  • WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW

  • WHO DISLIKED THIS?!?!?!?

  • who would dislike this video?? honestly... really?

  • @incubus421421 Best thing to ostentatiously contemplate about in a youtube comment.

  • This guy doesnt come out in forstwire nor limewire ;[

  • Lul @ audience. "Hot mutha fucking shit gawd dayuuuum!"....Like, the whole time.

  • i hear chris potter actually has a jackhammer for a tongue...

  • @walsh93jazz I loled

  • even when he is playing alone the changes can be heard

  • He totally raped that song . :( Sound pitchy and blasted.

  • @Hazeleyedtaurus maybe he wanted it to sound that way you racist son of a bitch

  • Pure Genius!

  • 3:25 to 3:40 unbelievable genius

  • Chris Potter just changed how I perceive sound.

  • @marredsun I feel for ya.

  • @YofterMofter What do you mean?

  • How does Justin Bieber have 5000x as many views as this?!

God, I wish music appreciation were a mandatory part of education, or at least some sort of ear training, then geniuses like this would be the millionaires while generic pop stars like Katy Perry and Justin Bieber would be living in tiny NYC studios.

  • Lol, saxcrazy89. I'd be shouting and stroking my chin! =D

  • 4:19 to 4:44. oh my god...

  • at some points the swing is so hard it almost has a hip hop feel to it. so great.

  • Sometimes when I watch these types of videos I comment and say "I wish I could play like this."

But man, I'm just glad that SOMEONE can play like this.

  • @HendrixcommaMartin That's so well put, man! I've been thinking about it since I read it a few weeks ago.

  • @HendrixcommaMartin very well said

  • He gave a clinic at my school. =] It was pretty outstanding.

  • 7:46-7:50

    I came

  • @ApatheticVegnagun lol it's orgasmic isn't it, eh?!?

  • He is so amazing!!!! Go Chris Go!!!!

  • Good God....

  • Could use a little blade cowherd and rogers!

  • First time I've heard this guy. Absolutely phenomenal.

  • no creo cómo una persona va a poder transcribir esa!!

  • eso es lo mejor versión de all the things you are en todo el mundo!

  • this is incredible!!!

  • Imagine se ele se mexesse os dedos.....

  • this is incredible !!

  • I saw Chris Potter play with Dave Holland at The Jazz Showcase here in Chicago tonight. I talked to him for a few minutes after his set, and when I mentioned this solo he laughed and said "I've never even heard it, I can't remember where or when I played it, I think it was for some clinic or something"......amazing he doesn't even remember something so monumental.

  • @WHYNOTDV8 haha. Ya man, you know he could play something exactly like this... exactly different that is, every day. He is very original, so I don't think one solo is going to stick in his mind that much.

  • @victorvents

Not sure whether you're joking, but if not, you really need to get educated. I was Chris' roommate in college and am a professional saxophonist as well. What you are denigrating is nothing less than an epic performance. This is the state of the art. Please have a little respect for one of the giants of the music.

  • great

  • Impresionante!

  • @victorvents hahah!

  • I heard he had is tongue replaced with a tiny jackhammer

  • is there a second part to this?

  • I heard somebody transcribed this. I want! Lol.

  • @tjc197 - I did! google 'chris potter all the things transcription' and you can find it.

  • @tjc197 transcribe it yourself.

  • Chris Potter on Ryan Kisor's album "Power Source" is amazing, You should check it out.

  • @krazyboypimp are u serious??

  • Ridiculous.

  • naaaaaaasty

  • Best in a long long time.

    Thanks.

  • what goes on this dudes head? i'm a sax player myself and holy shit. if i was as good as him, on a concoction drugs, and practiced during my entire excistance i could never come up with the stuff that he does

  • @scrillanilla That's because you'd be spending your whole time practicing instead of listening and doing drugs which is stupid. =D

  • Does anyone know when this recording was done? Who did this recording? Who owns it? I want to use it in a thesis I'm writing. N

  • @nickbowd these are obviously questions you just need to ask the user who uploaded this video. just from the video's description you can see he did the recording at a masterclass

  • Man this is awesome. Sure wish you had the video of this too. Whatever, thanks for posting it.

  • all this is AMAZING! and what amazes me the most is that he does all of this without a rythm section!!!

  • wow

  • i like that

  • simply killin

  • Shut up and enjoy the music?!?!?!? What are they supposed to do sit there and stroke their chins the whole time? Expressing your enjoyment for his music is not a crime.

  • Dude, we jazz musicians thrive and play off of the people we are surrounded with. It's jazz man. That's all the explanation needed.

  • oh well thank you for the clarification

  • Cause in Jazz, it happens in the moment.

In Classical music everything has happened before

  • @saxcrazy89 Lol, stroke chins... Actually, I would probably stroke my chin and shout at the same time! =D Lol.

  • For all those interested in seeing this solo on paper I did the transcription of this. It's not perfect by any means but it's pretty damn close. You can find it by googling 'chris potter all the things transcription'. It's the first link.

  • THANK YOU! :D

  • thanks a lot for this man, I've spent many hours trying to work out how he comes up with this stuff! :)

  • nice work, but:

everyone who is able to play this, is learning it quicker with fingering it out himself. I mean:

When I transcribe ONE SINGLE LICK by myself, it is easier for me to play it, instead of reading the notes.

    Nevermind: Nice Work

  • Well done

    Mario from Canada

  • wish that all the sax players at these master classes and concerts would shut up and enjoy the music instead of oooing and ahhing every 2 seconds.

  • yeah, it's seriously annoying....

  • i wish all jive people would stop worrying about people enjoying music. How long is the stick up your ass?

  • My sax teacher told me that somebody transcribed.

  • You're joking...

  • I transcribed it! send me a message and I'll send you the link. I'm curious, who is your sax teacher?

  • Mike Brignola.

  • Sweet! Thank you so much! I got it from your post on Google. God bless you!

  • His name is Miguel Alvarado. Monster player.

  • Oh my god. This is freakin awesome! especially last few minutes...

    thanks for posting

  • The last couple minutes he sounds like Charlie Parker, but on tenor.
