Excellent video! The only thing that could improve it would be to leave out the Howard Gardner crap. That is just his goofy theory that has become popular because it is easy for teachers to understand. But you can take any kind of talent and call it an "intelligence". Adding his theory into vids like this dumbs down the quality.
@MetalBru01 Lol yeah, it can be a serious problem of course (on par with a disease) but these small monologue type thingys are kind of futile at doing justice to the actual experiences people go through.
Im sure all involved hearts are in the right place though.
i believed that i was stupid, lazy, unfit everyhere (and still believes it subconsciously) until i went to some of the top schools (iit bombay & stanford) in the world and then in professional life thrived in business & became a multimillionaire. i also have adhd, was born & grew relatively very poor, lonely most of my life & was homeless several times. now i am aiming to become a billionaire by using my gift of dyslexia consciously.
Dyslexia has gaven me an amazing pro and a terrible con. I am an actor. You see, I am amazing at memorizing lines, lyrics, monologues, and everything to do with acting. The con is, I can't read. That straight forward. If im in class doing a read through or a cold read for an audition. I usually fail and crash and burn. But if i look at it 3 or 4 times, i'll have it memorized.
@Omni315 yes ofc i was the only one in all my classes....and you feel that you are a dumb freak..but other people also seem stupid to me why do i get bad grades for my German and Dutch class ?.

I am a dyslexic adult in Detroit and having a hard time dealing with the lack of opportunity to elevate my existence in the city of Detroit. When I was a child in Detroit public system I learn to hate school because of the way I put down and told that I will never amount to anything. The sad thing I came to believe all what those negative things the Teachers would say, because they was right I was an academic failure no matter how hard I try not be, due to being dyslexic that hurt.
I dont like the way they call Dyslexia is a "disability". I think my brain is wired differently in a way which doesn't favour reading and writing. However I believe it has vastly improved my other logic skills. Infact when I did my dyslexia test I finished all logic questions / tasks under time. There was meant to be enough questions to last the 2 mins given to answer them. I answered them all correctly with time to spare.
Then came the reading tasks. lol. That was a shambles.
i have no reading problems before or even now. the only thing is, I find it so hard to comprehend in reading complicated matters (like reading deep books, subjects math) i also often got this "short term memory loss". like when i wanted to tell something and someone interferes, then in a second i forget what i am suppose to say. it's like my idea is fading away and I can't control it to stop. then it's all gone and i can't remember anything .. am i sick or am i just dumb and stupid?? I always thought I was stupid at life at a young age during high school and would need to force myself to read and write, even until now. When I asked my parents about the memories I had back in year 1 as a child where I required extra tuition, my parents told me I was dyslexic. It finally all makes sense, I am very good at maths and problem solving though.
Iam dyslexic and this is not a gift this is the worst thing that could ever happen how can this be a gift. It takes me twice as long just to be finished with school.I hate it so much I cry everytime I have to write an eassy for college.

I'm going to tell the truth, "Dyslexia" just F@#king pisses me off, I have it, I struggle every day of my life in school with it. I wish never had it. It's like a curse!
@EPR1FILMS I’ve been where you've been. It comes with some dam annoying disabilities. But you’ll find it comes with great abilities as well, often resulting in many people seeing you as a true genius. For example, I am heavily dyslectic, yet I spot my university lecturers mathematical mistakes in exams while no other student does. I can solve a rubiks cube blindfolded. I have recently solved a 13x13x13 (a normal one is 3x3x3) and I didn’t even find it a challenge.
I'm dyslexic and happy to be. I'm keeping an 86% average in my high school and I'm on the honor roll. I'm in the gifted classes at my high school, I keep a high average by being a hands on learner. If a teacher just goes up to the board and tells me to answer a question without explaining how to do it I'm lost. I have an extra class and a tutor that helps me learn in different and better ways.
@CreativeM0 , the same like me too here! Especially with speech disorder and something else like slow in response, but i really work hard for the past few years to find my weaknesses and train myself. To find yourself dyslexic is also painful experience but i'm sure there will be always a way for somebody to be a sucessful person in this life. At least...., that is what i believe in.

It must also be said the the theory of multiple intelligences is a politically correct definition of intelligence, which tries to include as many people as possible. As an example, i have no inherent musical ability, yet i can play an instrument. However instead of that being categorized as a skill, it is instead a measure of my "musical intelligence". I may be able to get on board with a more general approach like auditory intelligence, but not with it being so strict as being called musical IQ
Yes, I completely agree that is is a correct definition of intelligence.
It's like for example. there are people are there who are highly academically intelligent. They get top grades in everything, have amazing mathematics capabilities, etc etc.. And yet their common sense and social "intelligences" just lacks so much.
And i'd like to say the main guy who states that computers are replacing the lower level brain functions is a joke. That is not true in the least. Even visual designing apps, which i use as part of my profession, are heavily reliant on text and text navigation. From research on the subject (i myself don't have dyslexia) shows there are multiple methods for getting around the disability, i'd say its better to focus on those than give up and renounce the world of text for the pure visual world.
I am sorry if this insults anyone, but i prefer to always be as direct and possible and speak my mind. I personally take this video as an attempt to develop a "feel good" atmosphere for those with dyslexia... and while that isn't a terrible thing, the reasoning being used to do it in this case is. In a sense those in the video are mentally condemning themselves as being useless for all but the more niche areas. Why use your dyslexia as a crutch in this manner?
@rainerfilm your initial reply was "what is that?" - I presumed that the demonstrative pronoun refers to a word you're unfamiliar with - such as "git" for instance. Hence, I advised you to look it up on Google. I do not know what else can be unclear about the following: dyslectic or not, you sound like a preening, self congratulatory git
I'm dyslexic, and I personally don't go out of my way to find reasoning to make myself feel better like, like humankind moving towards a visually dominated world. Let's face it, despite visual images being an enormous part of our world, images will never replace the written word. Just because like 17% of people are dyslexic, doesn't mean the whole world is going to change as a result of it. It makes our lives easier, it makes images more clear and more obvious etc.
Too much of this ability to think in pictures.Everyone think in pictures it is the most common form of thinking. From recent studies dyslexia in some individual is cause by lack of omega-3 and zinc, vitamin b6. It is also noted that dyslexics tend to have obsessive behaviors. its both a pro/con. There are so much negative psychology roles this condition plays however it is not apparent in here. Gives dyslexics too much false confidence.
@sugarkaneandchloe aparently when somebody with dyslexia reads, they transfer the sybols that they re reading into images in their head to try and understand whats to be explained. You might not think that you are a visual thinker, but all dyslexics are. It's a fact, nd if you wern't a visual thinker chances are you'd have most likely been mis diagnosed. :¬/
@ACbonscottDC Hello, I dont think labelling all dyslexics the same helps really :-) I am definately dyslexic and I dont "think" in pictures, I just think.
Thanks for posting this video Chris - a wonderful film! We all need to hear more about the gifts, talents, and advantages of the dyslexic thinking style.

@Mylazyweekends
I agree this documentary needs work...

I am dyslexic and I LOVE the written word. I dont use "visuals" so to speak. My "thing" is reading, and books.Great film .
sugarkaneandchloe 2 years ago
@sugarkaneandchloe aparently when somebody with dyslexia reads, they transfer the sybols that they re reading into images in their head to try and understand whats to be explained. You might not think that you are a visual thinker, but all dyslexics are. It's a fact, nd if you wern't a visual thinker chances are you'd have most likely been mis diagnosed. :¬/
