@rag5206 Of course we have a giant military. Look at our role in the world......our military is what makes us who we are. The reason we have so much influence over world politics is mostly due to our hard power. Not to mention the military provides tons of jobs directly and indirectly. Economically, States love having military installations dumping fuel into their economies. It's really not as simple as buying planes takes away education or healthcare
Why are people dogging this aircraft? The capabilities of the JSF are absolutely amazing. Stealth platform that provides astonishing SA to the pilot and information sharing capabilities second to none mixed with super smart weapons......In the end it can dogfight with the viper. Not too bad in my book. Sure the production cost escalated but what aircraft doesn't. This is not another F-111 incident.

Does money spent of weapons pay a long term dividend to society as opposed to money spent on Health,Housing,Education,Safe/Clean Public Transport,Better Roads,Job Programs,Tourism,Scientific Research,Space Program.Does the money spent to fuel a huge military only benefit a few elite?
@rag5206 The military benefits me lol. Nice to have someone comment with some kind of a rashional argument. I'd continue but I have a feeling this thread would become very long.
@msalak87 Thank you for your courtesy and well mannered response. I hope u don't think I was was bagging military veterans, my daughters boyfriend is in Afganistan at the moment.
@msalak87 It's slow when compared to several currently produced, the obvious one, the F-22, the F-16, the F-15, and under certain circomstances, even the punk-ass F/A-18. And with the exception of the F-15, THEY ALL out-manuver all variants of the F-35. I believe a certain General's words were "The bitch can't run and can't turn so tell me, what exactly can it do" Basically it can only win if not spotted. Bottom line. That's why some people don't like it. (I'm not one oof those people)

@KarthikSoun Worse; it got technical fast! So tecknical the costs spiraled out of control like The F22. At least the F22 can compete with any russian built fighter but this is a complete washout. I don't know why the israelis even want to mess with this aircraft. Their better off sticking with surplus F-15s.
Such a waste of money... NATO would've been a lot better off with more A-10's, simply because it packs a bigger punch, and the F-35 can't manoeuvre for shit. It's not like we'll be engaging in any dogfights any time soon. Those days are long gone, it's all about air to ground now a days, which the A-10 is perfect for.
@AirTrackerGAMES So if dogfights are over, why care about maneuverability? And, your wrong, dogfights aren't gone. They are rare, but here and there close-in combat does occur, plus the F-35 is a very capable aircraft. Why would NATO want over 3,100 F-35s by 2035 if it such a bad plane?
@MrVolcanoes22 You just contradicted yourself. So you're saying maneuverability is useless? Might as well replace all of the jets in the military with fucking Boeing 747's. Maneuverability is key to evading AA fire. I said the days of dogfighting are long gone, but I never said that it doesn't happen. If an F-35 were to go up against a Su-35 it would lose for sure. The only reason NATO ordered so many F-35s is because of its stealth, which is the only thing it's good at.
@AirTrackerGAMES I'm sorry but you misunderstood me. You said that dogfights are over, false, and that the F-35's maneuverabilty is worth nothing, therefore I asked why maneuver? So many nations focus on manuever and the United States has always been on top of it all, in fact, the F-35 is the most technologically advanced STRIKE-FIGHTER in the world, it wasn't built for air superiority, but it was built to be able to hold its own against generation 4 fighters, including the SU-35.
@AirTrackerGAMES And you in a way contradicted yourself, mentioning the F-35's stealth. There are SAMs that can track and shoot down stealth aircraft but they aren't as effective as regular SAMs aimed at unstealthy aircraft. All is needed to avoid regular SAMs is some chaff and some small maneuvers. And you have to give it to the F-35, no other aircraft has been able to take off vertically or on a short runway, go supersonic, and land vertically but the F-35B STOVL/VTOL
so what if its not great its a uprade from the harrier it can stand still and fire and land anywhere.and it has stealte just what we need when fighting backward sand monkeys with rpg if we need speed we will use an f18 or sumthing like that
they should get rid of the a and c models and make somthing thats better than the compitition but leave the b model because it is miles ahead of what its replacing
US F-35 Pilot: Sweet my plane is best in world and super stealth, let's fly over Russia, their SU-PAK FA and S-400 will never detect my plane HHHAAHHHAA. WARNING!!!!!
@police666poop you seen the f-35s maneuvering above you? they were doing some testing last time i was in georgia, it's scary maneuverable. as much as i love the good ol f18, idk how it would do here.
@tobyYaphetS i dont hate china but i hate their government thats the only thing i hate about the chinese communism and yeah j-20 is like a black eagle being fried by a Lightning!!!!!!!
@tobyYaphetS Cmon now no need to spread that kind of hate.. its better than the J-20 no doubt about that..but that doesn't mean we have to hate china. They are people too. Remember that.
@Hardy123Zhao 1) It's difficult for the US to be 'broke' if it can continue to borrow money, quite effectively and cheaply if I might add, regardless of its budget or fiscal situation or the loss of its AAA credit rating. 2) If by 'broke' you mean the U.S. has continual outstanding public debt, then the US has been broke for over 150 years. It's simply more broke(n) now than ever.
@Hardy123Zhao I'm pretty sure the person who commented didn't spend 20x more on anything.. Maybe for the prices of food compared to China because stuff in China is dirt cheap because of the 3rd world living conditions in China..
@squiddie96 Unemployment so fucking high, and the govt. is still unwilling to built more factories to create jobs because of some stupid environmentalists....Jobs will never be created!
@b45her I agree with you there, I thought we were talking about American military aviation in general... F-35 is a huge wast of money and no clients will want it
@ESC8781 No it's not just a bomber. The JSF is a family of fighters that are supposed to be a replacement for the F-16, A-10, Harrier and F/A-18. The JSF has 3 variants. All of the aircraft that it's supposed to replace can perform the bomber mission. The difference is that those aircraft do not have the stealth technology (which btw is not working properly) or the advanced electronics (which could be added to existing aircrafts). The JSF has turned out to be in all aspects a disaster.
@Giorg1581 How is the stealth not working out? What? It is designed to be stealthy from the frontal aspect but just like the the J-20 and PAK-FA it is not all aspect stealth.
Also, you cannot add the DAS system to any aircraft. The F-35's DAS is integrated into the systems radar and HUD. You cannot just do that to any plane. It would result in an entirely different plane.
I would say that a plane that isn't going to enter service for 4-6 years and makes technological leaps isn't a failure.
@franknbeans4761 Everything that could go wrong has gone wrong with this project. Its costs have risen dramatically and as the program proceeds it will suck up more money, the deadlines have been extended multiple times, the software is far behind schedule, its program director was sacked because of poor progress, it's too fast and too vulnerable to act as a replacement to the A-10, it is in danger of being overweight, it overheats, critical tests have not started yet,
@Giorg1581 Again, it still has 4-6 more years of development. For example, the F-35B first flew in 2008. The F-35C in 2010. Do you expect them to be ready?
I have researched this thoroughly, including the information you gave. It is all fixable.
For example, the V-22 had a terrible development, yet it is very successful now. As is the F-22. The P-3 Orion started off with a terrible reputation, but look at its successes.
They will fix it's problems and as a complete plane, it will be good.
@franknbeans4761 I hope the issues are fixed. Though the plane is already in production with the "philosophy" of having the fighters ready for service as soon as testing is concluded. Most if not all of the planes will have to be returned to their plant to be refit increasing its costs further. I think in the end it will cost so much and will be delayed for so long that orders will be dropped completely or less aircraft ordered. If they make it it will be at a stupendous expense. Time will tell.
@Giorg1581 the reason 13 F-35s have been built before introduction is so all 13 can be tested to the breaking point(the F-35 is the most rigorously tested aircraft in USAF history)and with another 4-6 years to go until these aircraft are ready to be introduced the problems associated with it are definitely fixable.
@hotpocketpoison Sorry, but this is wishful thinking. Adm. David Venlet the project manager has said in an interview on the 1st of December 2011 about JSF's Build And Test: "Fundamentally, that was a miscalculation,". And added: "I have the duty to navigate this program through concurrency. I don't have the luxury to stand on the pulpit and criticize and say how much I dislike it and wish we didn't have it. My duty is to help us navigate through it.".
@hotpocketpoison "You'd like to take the keys to your shiny new jet and give it to the fleet with all the capability and all the service life they want."
@hotpocketpoison "What we're doing is, we're taking the keys to the shiny new jet, giving it to the fleet and saying, 'Give me that jet back in the first year. I've got to go take it up to this depot for a couple of months and tear into it and put in some structural mods, because if I don't, we're not going to be able to fly it more than a couple, three, four, five years.' That's what concurrency is doing to us."
@Giorg1581 no project manager of the F-35 has ever said those things. the F-35 has so far exceeded any and all expectations laid down by the USAF. if this aircraft was as bad as many misleading people(Kopp,Sprey, etc.)would have you believe then they would have cancelled it long ago, just like they cancelled highly promising yet expensive projects such as the XB-70, MBT-70, etc. in the past entire aircraft have been designed and built in 6 years, the F-35 can easily be fixed in this time frame.
@hotpocketpoison Next thing you'll say is that the F-35B variant has not been placed under a 2 year probation with the possibility of cancellation if corrections are unsuccessful. Good thing we don't live in an Orwellian world and news articles cannot be rewritten to the benefit of the wrongful. You must either work as PR officer for Lockheed Martin or your just another youtube troll :)
@Giorg1581 the F-35B has recently been doing very well, in october 2011 it made its first vertical landing on the USS wasp. this will be the first stealthy, supersonic, VTOL, 5th gen aircraft in existence, it is obvious it will be riddled with flaws 4-6 years before it is even introduced, this story is the same for every aircraft in history as ambitious as the F-35B(quite possibly the most ambitious in aviation history).
I AGREE WITH YOU. Isn't it fucked up how corporate welfare works? The crony capitalism tends to pick the poor choice. The f35 and F22 are both failures. They will never see war and they are nothing more than a welfare jobs program.
@franknbeans4761 has issues with stealth, parts are build at different locations and some need to be milled into place, fuel dump system processes a fire hazard, the airframe is considered to not last the required lifespan. Do you want to know more? Search: "Trillion-Dollar Jet Has Thirteen Expensive New Flaws".
@macaion897 Not anything for war but anything for protection of freedom. Our nation will do what it takes forever to protect our way of life and will also strive to help those who want to live this way.
Im Curious.....What is the big flap located just behind the cockpit....I know the original models didnt have this flap....I know its for the vertical fan intake, but whats the difference from using the other sliding gates??? < for lack of a better name for them.
@JaySuave11 It acts as a speed brake also, and it moving forward when it is deployed it sucks in more air just like carriers turn into the wind when they launch off of a carrier. That is the purpose of it.
In addition to many skeptic financial and mission reviews of the F-35 there is one from the power-plant point of view at Int'l J. Turbo & Jet Engines 28 #3 (2011) vs. a fleet of pilot-less X-47B/C, claiming that the future jet technologies would center on jet-steering, tailless, stealth, unmanned fleets.
i dunno i love the F-22 i think its just sexy and cool, if limited in overall warload, but this F-35 i just dont see it, its a complicated single engine lightfighter? Even if the engine is a beast with high payload capacity, if it goes out the planes toast. Therefore its got half the reliability of the F-22, super hornet or any modern russian aircraft. Also even less load than the F-22 again, unless they go external and break the stealth - then why bother? just take an F-15 for x2 the load
@kineticdeath these days, there aren't ANY real world air to air combat missions. and 22s and 35s dont need a lot of payload because other countries do not have the capability to fly a bunch of jets at a single dogfight anyways..
and if some how some way they did bring a whole bunch of jets to a fight, the u.s. would know before they even take off.
@kineticdeath for a strictly air to air fighter (providing supremacy was utterly ensured) a small warload may be fine, but the F-35 is supposed to be at the very least multi role. Its name of Joint Strike Fighter however tends to imply its a strike aircraft, dropping 2 bombs in 1 mission hardly counts as an effective wartime strategy, sure it worked for the F117s in iraq in 1991 but this isnt 1991 and not every enemy will be 1991 iraq
@kineticdeath and ultimately i dont think it matters how stealthy an airframe is, you might be utterly invisible to all forms of tracking and sensors but the moment you fire off a missile your presence gets screamed out to everyone at least with in BVR ranges. The weight of the engagement is then strictly on the missile and if its jammed or decoyed then the expensive launch platform is just that, an expensive explosive hauler.
@kineticdeath untill missiles are stealth completely cannot be detected by warning recievers and are completely immune to all ecm then i just dont see the point in spending billions on a single engined light fighter with all round limited real time capability. Stick with F-15's they still can mix it with mainstream russian fighters, work on missile, tracking, ecm, eccm technology. Who cares if the enemy see's you coming if they cannot hit you. Proper ecm will do that just as well anyway
And what? They going to threat third world air forces via those planes? I do not bolieve that F35 s are any real treat for Russian modern planes like SU 30s or T50s..or even Chineese planes and both Russian and Chineese radars. They could build much more improved F14 construction or F15....But they decided to build unreliable ,costly planes. Is this corruption matter in US industry to take such money from tax payers and give nothing in return ,only good looking piece of crab.....
@Husar1980 wrong. we're still testing even better equiptment for the f 16, 15, 18, 22, 35's and probably even more planes that i dont know about. also, you dont know squat about jets cause ALL FIGHTER JETS ARE UNRELIABLE.
give nothing in return?? man.. you dont even know how fast we react when we gotta protect our country. when i was in japan we generated all of our f15s in a matter of hours when we thought n. korea was about to do something. most countries cant even do that in a couple of days!
This is a wonderful looking aeroplane and I am sure it has great performance - but the harrier uses a much simpler and more elegant solution to vertical take off. The single engine provides for both vertical take and landing as well as forward thrust. It carries no dead weight.
if this aircraft doesn't work in combat, then let get all the particapting nations together and build nukes together!! But i'm confident this will perform exceptionally well!
Love this plane. I love the desgin of the STOVL feature. The fact that it uses a cool air lift fan to lessen tarmac, runway and landing area damage. I think we could end F-22 production early. Keep what we have then use the F-35 variants to cover any situation or demand of each military branch. We could even desgin in the vectoring nozzles of F-22 for Air Force and Navy variants for supreme manurability. Just my opinion only though.

@MrVolcanoes22 We live in a weird world mister Volcanoes!
Let me explain it like this;
If you got bombs with some sort of paint inside the bombs, and you shoot it into the sky,
and a airplane like this one flys through the paint,
then the enemy painted the airplane,
and therefor its invisibility is suddenly gone.
...
In this case the enemy can shoot its rockets towards the paint that is now stuck at the airplane's body.
...
The Nazis tested this at their own stealth planes and it worked

@Hardy123Zhao 1) It's difficult for the US to be 'broke' if it can continue to borrow money, quite effectively and cheaply if I might add, regardless of its budget or fiscal situation or the loss of its AAA credit rating. 2) If by 'broke' you mean the U.S. has continual outstanding public debt, then the US has been broke for over 150 years. It's simply more broke(n) now than ever.

Giorg1581 2 months ago
@Giorg1581 It's a bomber dude.
ESC8781 2 months ago
@ESC8781 No it's not just a bomber. The JSF is a family of fighters that are supposed to be a replacement for the F-16, A-10, Harrier and F/A-18. The JSF has 3 variants. All of the aircraft that it's supposed to replace can perform the bomber mission. The difference is that those aircraft do not have the stealth technology (which btw is not working properly) or the advanced electronics (which could be added to existing aircrafts). The JSF has turned out to be in all aspects a disaster.
Giorg1581 1 month ago
@Giorg1581 How is the stealth not working out? What? It is designed to be stealthy from the frontal aspect but just like the the J-20 and PAK-FA it is not all aspect stealth.
Also, you cannot add the DAS system to any aircraft. The F-35's DAS is integrated into the systems radar and HUD. You cannot just do that to any plane. It would result in an entirely different plane.
I would say that a plane that isn't going to enter service for 4-6 years and makes technological leaps isn't a failure.
franknbeans4761 1 month ago
@franknbeans4761 Everything that could go wrong has gone wrong with this project. Its costs have risen dramatically and as the program proceeds it will suck up more money, the deadlines have been extended multiple times, the software is far behind schedule, its program director was sacked because of poor progress, it's too fast and too vulnerable to act as a replacement to the A-10, it is in danger of being overweight, it overheats, critical tests have not started yet,
Giorg1581 1 month ago
@Giorg1581 Again, it still has 4-6 more years of development. For example, the F-35B first flew in 2008. The F-35C in 2010. Do you expect them to be ready?
I have researched this thoroughly, including the information you gave. It is all fixable.
For example, the V-22 had a terrible development, yet it is very successful now. As is the F-22. The P-3 Orion started off with a terrible reputation, but look at its successes.
They will fix it's problems and as a complete plane, it will be good.
franknbeans4761 1 month ago
@franknbeans4761 I hope the issues are fixed. Though the plane is already in production with the "philosophy" of having the fighters ready for service as soon as testing is concluded. Most if not all of the planes will have to be returned to their plant to be refit increasing its costs further. I think in the end it will cost so much and will be delayed for so long that orders will be dropped completely or less aircraft ordered. If they make it it will be at a stupendous expense. Time will tell.
Giorg1581 1 month ago
@Giorg1581 the reason 13 F-35s have been built before introduction is so all 13 can be tested to the breaking point(the F-35 is the most rigorously tested aircraft in USAF history)and with another 4-6 years to go until these aircraft are ready to be introduced the problems associated with it are definitely fixable.
hotpocketpoison 1 month ago
@hotpocketpoison Sorry, but this is wishful thinking. Adm. David Venlet the project manager has said in an interview on the 1st of December 2011 about JSF's Build And Test: "Fundamentally, that was a miscalculation,". And added: "I have the duty to navigate this program through concurrency. I don't have the luxury to stand on the pulpit and criticize and say how much I dislike it and wish we didn't have it. My duty is to help us navigate through it.".
Giorg1581 1 month ago
@hotpocketpoison "You'd like to take the keys to your shiny new jet and give it to the fleet with all the capability and all the service life they want."
Giorg1581 1 month ago
@hotpocketpoison "What we're doing is, we're taking the keys to the shiny new jet, giving it to the fleet and saying, 'Give me that jet back in the first year. I've got to go take it up to this depot for a couple of months and tear into it and put in some structural mods, because if I don't, we're not going to be able to fly it more than a couple, three, four, five years.' That's what concurrency is doing to us."
Giorg1581 1 month ago
@Giorg1581 no project manager of the F-35 has ever said those things. the F-35 has so far exceeded any and all expectations laid down by the USAF. if this aircraft was as bad as many misleading people(Kopp,Sprey, etc.)would have you believe then they would have cancelled it long ago, just like they cancelled highly promising yet expensive projects such as the XB-70, MBT-70, etc. in the past entire aircraft have been designed and built in 6 years, the F-35 can easily be fixed in this time frame.
hotpocketpoison 1 month ago
@hotpocketpoison Next thing you'll say is that the F-35B variant has not been placed under a 2 year probation with the possibility of cancellation if corrections are unsuccessful. Good thing we don't live in an Orwellian world and news articles cannot be rewritten to the benefit of the wrongful. You must either work as PR officer for Lockheed Martin or your just another youtube troll :)
Giorg1581 1 month ago
@Giorg1581 the F-35B has recently been doing very well, in october 2011 it made its first vertical landing on the USS wasp. this will be the first stealthy, supersonic, VTOL, 5th gen aircraft in existence, it is obvious it will be riddled with flaws 4-6 years before it is even introduced, this story is the same for every aircraft in history as ambitious as the F-35B(quite possibly the most ambitious in aviation history).
hotpocketpoison 1 month ago
@Giorg1581 They should of gone with the McDonnell Douglas JSF search it up in google and youtube search it.

I AGREE WITH YOU. Isn't it fucked up how corporate welfare works? The crony capitalism tends to pick the poor choice. The f35 and F22 are both failures. They will never see war and they are nothing more than a welfare jobs program.
bigtruckseriesreview 1 month ago
@bigtruckseriesreview like the YF-23 and the YF-22 but I like the f-35C its not so bad it gonna be the most maneuverable one of the family.
ESC8781 1 month ago
@franknbeans4761 has issues with stealth, parts are build at different locations and some need to be milled into place, fuel dump system processes a fire hazard, the airframe is considered to not last the required lifespan. meadboys12 3 months ago
@JaySuave11 It acts as a speed brake also, and it moving forward when it is deployed it sucks in more air just like carriers turn into the wind when they launch off of a carrier. That is the purpose of it.
brofranomo 3 months ago
In addition to many skeptic financial and mission reviews of the F-35 there is one from the power-plant point of view at Int'l J. Turbo & Jet Engines 28 #3 (2011) vs. a fleet of pilot-less X-47B/C, claiming that the future jet technologies would center on jet-steering, tailless, stealth, unmanned fleets.

Ryoske6 4 months ago
i dunno i love the F-22 i think its just sexy and cool, if limited in overall warload, but this F-35 i just dont see it, its a complicated single engine lightfighter? Even if the engine is a beast with high payload capacity, if it goes out the planes toast. Therefore its got half the reliability of the F-22, super hornet or any modern russian aircraft. Also even less load than the F-22 again, unless they go external and break the stealth - then why bother? just take an F-15 for x2 the load
kineticdeath 4 months ago 2
@kineticdeath these days, there aren't ANY real world air to air combat missions. and 22s and 35s dont need a lot of payload because other countries do not have the capability to fly a bunch of jets at a single dogfight anyways..
and if some how some way they did bring a whole bunch of jets to a fight, the u.s. would know before they even take off.
yixphil 3 months ago
@kineticdeath for a strictly air to air fighter (providing supremacy was utterly ensured) a small warload may be fine, but the F-35 is supposed to be at the very least multi role. Its name of Joint Strike Fighter however tends to imply its a strike aircraft, dropping 2 bombs in 1 mission hardly counts as an effective wartime strategy, sure it worked for the F117s in iraq in 1991 but this isnt 1991 and not every enemy will be 1991 iraq
kineticdeath 3 months ago
@kineticdeath and ultimately i dont think it matters how stealthy an airframe is, you might be utterly invisible to all forms of tracking and sensors but the moment you fire off a missile your presence gets screamed out to everyone at least with in BVR ranges. The weight of the engagement is then strictly on the missile and if its jammed or decoyed then the expensive launch platform is just that, an expensive explosive hauler.
kineticdeath 3 months ago
@kineticdeath untill missiles are stealth completely cannot be detected by warning recievers and are completely immune to all ecm then i just dont see the point in spending billions on a single engined light fighter with all round limited real time capability. Stick with F-15's they still can mix it with mainstream russian fighters, work on missile, tracking, ecm, eccm technology. Who cares if the enemy see's you coming if they cannot hit you. Proper ecm will do that just as well anyway
kineticdeath 3 months ago
Husar1980 4 months ago
