  • I have some older C/Y lenses and was wondering if the Sony DSLR's take the older Zeiss manual focus lenses?

    Customer Reviews:

Let me start by saying that I teach a digital photography class at the local community college, and I've seen\used\taught about every major brand and many minor brands of digital cameras, and I think every manufacturer makes a camera that is right for different people with different requirements. That being the case, the alpha900 is ...

  • ey this is Matthew Jordan Smith's choice

  • sorry if u said it in the video but cant be bothered watching anymore so what camera did u use to film this?

  • i thinks a77 is better than a900 they are both 24mb but the the a77 has 12 cont. shot and have a full hd video recording, a900 dont have only bigger pixel 24.8mb something

  • @fbhansum Yeah it has all that but it is not a full frame camera and for some people that is a big deal. Plus EVF would not compare to the excellent viewfinder the A900 has. Many professionals reviewers claimed that A900 has a best viewfinder in any pro camera.

  • lens was 1680

  • can anyone suggest me a best camera i don't have problem of budget plz

tell me what's better canon mark 2 or sony alpha a900

  • @begstok canon mark 2 easy

  • @begstok Depends what lenses you have. I wouldn't look at Canon. I would either get A900 which I did as I had Sony lenses. Or get a Nikon D3/D3s/D700. Canon is not a contender compared to those cameras if you taking still photography unless you focused on video but than you need to spend more money on extras as follow focus, and etc.

  • 70mb jpeg?

  • @Classified978 He must have read the specs incorrectly or he was referring to some combination. The RAW files are 38 MB.

  • i actully prefer sony dslr to canon or nikon. i just think they have better implumitation of the functions in the camera compared to canon and nikon! i have owned a a550 loved it! but i had to change to the 600d/t3i becauce i have a limited budget and canon have more veriety to the lenses in terms of cost! but i defenetly prefer the sony!

sorry if my spelling isn't that good!

  • I am looking to get a camera to make music videos and make short films, but also for photography. The camera that is SO FAR best is the Canon Mk 2, but I read that the Sony A900 has 24.6 mega pixels..How is the video capabilities on the Sony for what I need it for?

  • im looking for a sony because im a minolta user rigth now..so i thought it might be good to go to sony so i can use my minolta lenses,im looking for a camera that can shoot video also...should i wait for this so called a1000?....

  • i heard from a Sony official a soon to be released Sony a1000. It has video mode which kills the Canon off the planet coz it records in 25 megapixels. it also has the new to be added 240GB Solid State memory card which is also going to be an attribute to the new and upcoming SOny version of the Red Camera recording in 4-5K which will have the massive 1T Solid State memory card. SONY has gone beyond the ultimate.

  • I'm sorry but in my opinion, this camera has better colors than it's competitors...

  • @vulvy8858 agreed! nikon sucks big time btw!

  • Alpha a580, all the way!

  • i have a900 camera, plz can you tell me what is the best iso for night time,

  • The Sony's DSLR range has no video capabilities, their only focus is just photography, you can get very well designed and high quality photo (and only photo) cameras from Sony, all of them have high ISO noise problems, its not an issue, its a feature :) (I only use 100 to 400) and all of that for around 1/3 to 1/4 of the price of similar Nikon or Canon, and with greater overall function and manufacture quality. Yes, my camera stock is 2 Alphas (35, 55) and 19 lenses IMHO they are awesome.

  • @tunespt That is no longer true. All four of their new Alphas have HD video mode and better than average noise performance.

  • @tunespt both of the cameras you own have video!?

  • @zurijohn At the time of writing, I had a 350 and a 550, both don't have video support but take nice pictures for they price range, since then I've acquired a 900 and a 580, the 900 does not have video but OMG for picture quality, the 580 is now the day to day backpacked and it has 1080p video, however it has a rolling shutter problem, fast side movements make things go jelly, the 12000ISO mode with 5 pictures (on the 580) does a great job to noise reduction making possible excelent nightshots.

  • @tunespt You said 35, 55 in your earlier post. Thought you meant to say a33, a 55. Anyways, just a misunderstanding. I had an a350, but moved over to a nikon d90 due to the ongoing annoyance of high noise. My d90 is better in that regard, but there's only soo much an cropped frame sensor can do. Now it's time to decide which full frame system to go with.

    Kind Regards.

  • @zurijohn D700 or D3 if you on Nikon. If you stayed with sony A900 is no brainer. Image quality is pretty much greater than any Nikons and colors are more accurate sadly the low light performance is lacking.

  • weirdo..put DT lens on FF body..

  • @kevinwcw I think, he got that kit from a PR company of Sony.

We experienced a similar situation as one of our Forum-Moderators got exactly that "constellation" (16-80 DT + A900). XD

  • What camera would you suggest for high iso shooting?

  • @factionxvt408x What's your budget? Nikon D3/D3s and D700 are the best if you can afford them.

  • @WhatDigitalCamera

Thanks. I'll keep that in mind. I always thought the nikons were really high iso performers. Anyway, could I ask if you could give me some recommendations for compact cameras that perform very well in low light? Do you happen to know how well the Lumix DMC LX3 performs?

    Thanks in advance!

  • @factionxvt408x I believe the best low noise high iso for a compact is the Sony Alpha NEX 3 or 5 series. They have APS-C size sensors so u can expect DSLR quality shots from them. ISO 769 noise on the NEX 5 is equivalent to ISO 868 noise on the D5000.

  • @kopial

Aw man. I thought it was just the screen when I was shooting with it. Some cameras have fantastic screens that make shots look better than it really is, but when when imported into the computer it looks terrible. The only gripe I have with the NEX is the terrible interface. I love samsung's or canon's compact cameras with their double decker dials. Thanks for the recommendation though, I will look into the NEX once again.

  • @factionxvt408x to be honest, NEX can already shot at low light. its iso could goes up to 12800! you might be considering this light weight dslr quality camera rather than getting expensive bulky cameras.

  • @Xyb3rTeCh

Yes, I plan on buying it. Although I don't have the money right now. LOL. Maybe by the time I could save up for it another iteration of the NEX will come out.

  • @WhatDigitalCamera biased!

  • @Xyb3rTeCh You are of course not biased. ;)

  • @factionxvt408x yeah...the Nikon D700 is the best for low noise.

  • @kopial 5d mk2 is better. the nikon d700 high iso loses out too much details

  • @Xyb3rTeCh I disagree with that. Lab testing shows D700 is better at high ISO. Check out DXOMark website for proof. I do have an inclination that you are being biased towards promoting the 5D Mk2...I'm not saying that D700 is way better than 5D Mk2 but when it comes to high ISO quality...D700 has yet to find a contender.

  • @kopial in a very technical term, of course you would believe DXOmark. but you don't always have to believe in their review. and d700 is not as sharp as the 5d2 because 12 mp is not enough.

  • @factionxvt408x his suggestion is biased. any camera can shot low iso.

  • @Xyb3rTeCh

    ...Really now?

  • @factionxvt408x of course it is. you just need to find cameras that is capable to shot with iso 3200 or 6400 and above. that should be enough to do your job. don't always have to follow people saying about the nikon whereby it can shot at low light. but not really. as other cameras like canon or sony could do the same high iso shooting mode.

  • @factionxvt408x

The A580 & A55 impressed me. They are obviously not at D3s level, but you just can´t expect that ;)

ISO 3200 is really nice, I think.

  • very good review and obviously he is very knowledgeable

with very clean English too (he must be English)

looks like a he is taking the shoots in London :-)

    very informative

    thanks for your efforts

  • have a check it out

very deep review here about this camera

    google it (dpreview)

  • @feelgoodaboutit Fine, get a P&S and post some arguments if you still want to complain in public.

It is not pricey, the A850 is still the cheapest FF-DSLR & has the highest resolution available for a FF-DSLR to date.

  • is he shooting this video with the same camera?

  • No there is no video function in the a900

  • why would you like video function on a professional camera photos? video with video and photos with photos, that's it!

  • @veoquenoesunproblema

yeah, I agree with you 100%

if you need HD movie simply buy a HD camcorder

  • @veoquenoesunproblema - because times have changed and many people want video and photo combo. When I photograph events (like weddings) switching between equipment isn't possible. I need video and professional photo. I sold my Sony and bought a Canon that offers both.

  • @feelgoodaboutit I don't want to insult you, and I respect your opinion, bur for me it is the stupid thing I have found in a camera, if you want video hire someone with video, thats it, I have not seen real pro photogr... that you this things, I even ask to some pros, real pros, and said me the same that I'm telling you, but anyway, is your like, not mind

  • @veoquenoesunproblema @veoquenoesunproblema - Since you're not a professional, I'm not insulted by you. I'm a media consultant working for a major network. I teach phototgraphy and graphic design at the local college. I've made a small fortune with my photography and have photographed and filmed national broadcast programs, and photo shoots of celebrities.

  • @feelgoodaboutit I don't kknow, camera photo with video, sounds someone doesn't have money for both...

  • @feelgoodaboutit what kind of canon did you purchase? I am looking for one with photo and video too

  • No, it was shot on the Canon EOS 5D MkII

  • Wow, not only a great camera, but the video camera that shot this had amazing detail, and quality, too! =)

    Good review, 5 stars.

  • This is thing is incredibly heavy with the 24-70mm f/2.8 lens, like a solid brick. It would probably handle better with a normal 50mm lens, or the DT lens, like shown on this video.

  • As the reviewer mentioned the weight of the camera is not that bad for a pro camera. The 24-70mm lens balances the camera body very well. If you get a chance to hold the combination and shoot you will notice how well balanced it is. BTW I think a DT lens on this body may be out-resolved in details :p

  • Well, I was shooting a jazz concert couple days ago, with the A900 and 70-200mm f/2.8 G lens, and I have to say it was THE lens to shoot this gig. I was sitting about 10 meters from the stage and the 70 to 200 focal lengths were just perfect. So I have to say, that this gear really works. However, it was very tight around there that I had a problem to pull out that big brick camera with that long lens. I guess it's a trade off, good quality, but pain in the but to huggle around...

  • It is a wonderful lens. I sold my older 70-200(non-HS) for the new G. Much better. I guess I am use to pro cameras. The Sony a900 when looked at through photos does no justice. Having in hand is totally different. I did surprise engagement shoot WHILE skating with the 70-200G + VG :p I hope you get to try the 85mm on the a900; beautiful photos await you!

  • is it just me or dose this guy remind any of you of joe hachem wsop winner ?

im really looking forward to the a850 review after seeing what he say's about the a900

  • Maybe if they stayed with CCD technology, maybe then the noise would be lower than with a CMOS sensor. But the CCD is taking more power, so with a full frame sensor, it would drain the battery very quickly. A live view would also be impractical with a CCD sensor due to high power consumption. Oh well, CMOS are cheaper to produce also, and everyone is switching now to CMOS, which supposedly have gotten better quality in the recent years, because the CMOS used to be inherrently noisy

  • Was this shot with 5dmkII?

  • Yes.

  • i like the size and weight of the camera, with weight your hand shake does not effext the camera so much, like if you had a compact super light camera your hand shakes would be a big bother, size is good for handling

  • I have the A700

What i dont like about the A900 is:

    - the missing automatic shooting programs (sport, portrait, landscape etc.), i dont see why a professional camera can't have those... they help a lot when changing environment radically

    - the shuttersound ... hehe... i like the A700 better. The a900 reminds me of D7D which is very mechanical

  • I have a Canon EOS 50D. Since a month ago.

You say you don't like the fact that the automatic shooting programs aren't present, because if you change environment radically. Well I say if you really change environment radically you've got a little time to change a few settings. And let's face it. Setting the mode-dial to Programs takes extremely great pics in pretty much any environment. I don't know about the A700 but 50D is great on P.

The shuttersound I agree about thou.

  • Well, even though the pasm program are prefered for professionals, why leave the knob with 5 open slots ??

    Completely stupid of sony..

On the 5D and 50D dont you have programs ??

  • 5D doesn't have any automatic programs, but the 50D has. Thou I used them the first week of photographing, now I'm only using the creative zone (PTvAvM (Or PASM if you don't use Canon)).

Now when you say so, the 5 open slots are actually a little unnecessary (I don't know how to spell it (I'm from Finland you know)).

  • It does have the shooting programs, just that they are hidden inside the menu. :)

  • If you want auto modes then you can just go back to compact cameras......a DSLR is not made to be automatic.....and its not like a pro would pour out thousands of dollars for a camera that they only have to point and shoot with besides auto settings are so far from accurate as they can be its better to have control over the camera which you dont have in auto. The closest to auto youll find on the more expensice cameras is P-auto which only controls A and S.

  • Or keep my Semi-Pro A700 DSLR ;-)

If you would please think some more about it... there are things that a shooting program can do, that PASM can't do...

Portrait mode ie. will keep the aperture in the are of 3.5-4.5

Macro will keep it in 4.5 to 7.1

Sport will keep Shutter as high as possible and sacrifice Aperture and ISO when needed

all those things without taking your brainpower - leaving you to think about the subject

  • The programs also help on the matters of Sharpness, Colours, Saturation and DRO...

very nice when you take snapshots...

  • For snapshots we carry the Compacts.

  • in case you've missed it but one of the fun things with dedicated photography is to be able to do everything yourself! its not hard at all to determine aperture, shutter speed and ISO until recently i would ahve said that WB is the only thing i leave at auto but not even that anymore. Its much easier to get the exact composition that your after when you are in charge. if you use M, A or S mode you dont have to sacrifice anything.

  • The thing you sacrifice is speed / versatilility...

I don't own a compact for 2 reasons: pixel / lens quality and AF-speed. Compacts are simply too slow to capture children in action.

The place i shoot snapshots the most, is garden parties with my family, and here its very important for me to be able to change environment very fast. indoor-outdoor-in tent and so forth. having programs for each environment eases me in shooting.

i know that P+cRAW is often enough though...

  • i can't follow you on the M-thing... using all Manual is only good for star-photography or studio...

i wouldn't be able to shoot family in M-mode... A-mode yes...

  • But as i would say its better to use P-mode than any of those programmed auto modes and control the ISO and let the camera decide s and m its really not hard and its quick or simply let the iso stay at 200 and change only the WB that can do alot.

  • obs!. im not trying to start a flame war lal just wanted that said.

Are you a serious photographer? well even if you are this is still a hot subject and opinions vary but im the one who says pixels are the least you hsould worry about they are overrated.

M-mode might be hard for some situations but i would think that indoors and stuff not moving is what i use manual for the most A-mode and sometimes S-mode i do use outside.

  • perfect review!!! thanks!!!

  • no flash? lol

  • dump beginner

  • i looked into this camera, and if you're going to look at buying one, make sure you see the iso performance, its not very impressive at all, actually made me decide otherwise.

  • You are correct, it has problems handling iso settings above 800, especially when shooting jpg. The other major downside in my opinion is the that the lens range is really small. But Sigma also makes full frame lenses and you get the image stabilization for free so its negotiable.

  • Actually the problem is more the fact that Adobe Camera Raw / Lightroom and Sony's own image processor handle the A900's noise VERY poorly. Dxo, Capture One 4, and the free programs Raw Therappee and RawHide handle the A900's noise much better. When using those one can easily get an image that is only a bit noisier than the Canon 5d2 at the same ISO if that's what you are looking for. But it's true Sony/Adobe really have dropped the ball software side which is a shame.

  • For those wondering why Nigel constantly has to press the Fn-button when going through the setting-menus, it's because the screen is switched off. Normally, after confirming a certain setting, you return to the regular menu without having to press a button again...

  • Great review! Thank you very much!

  • nice video work

  • No video? From Sony? Something that big from Sony and no video feature? Oh no.

  • good review. ugly camera tho

  • It's a beautiful camera to me, matter of taste I guess...

  • yh true

i want to see what a beautiful women is to you lol :)
