Willie Nelson has always sang off beat, speeding up and slowing down his phrases during live shows. He's more of a story teller than a singer so he sort of of freelances his vocals.

Of course he's notorious for having smoked alot of pot, I don't think that's ever affected his playing though. Nelson's always been one of the best country singers out there !

Was Willie hyped up on drugs? A truck driver I know told me about a concert he went to where Willie's performance was messed up by drugs. It just doesn't sound right when he's singing it too fast for the music. The studio version was definately the best.
