Excellent playing. Thank you. I'm playing it this Sunday. Flashing lights do not bother me. After all, music is primarily heard. And, if you were playing in a cathedral we wouldn't be able to see you anyhow! As for "Bach's articulation" ... well, it's not Bach's arrangement, is it? Loosen up a little, folks!
Indeed "Now Thank We All Our God", you have captured what its all about. The last time I was that thrilled was hearing Virgil play it on Bach's own organ Leipsig in1979 a year prior to Virgil's death. Listening below was a visiting group from China who could not believe their expierience of joy and love in this Christian place, as they believed there was no God. I thought later, some did some deep thinking after they left. David Snyder, Lumierist/Heavy Organ Productions
It is great seeing a younger person (and a geek to boot) keeping this wonderful music and skill alive. Organists amaze me with their coordination and I love the sound.
As an organist for more years than Id lke to admit, I was quite simply BLOWN away by the sound of this machine. I must have one. Your execution was perfect I dont ever remember hearing any better. You are truly gifted and blessed. Please let me have some information on this machine. WRKOUTFUN@YAHOO.COM
This is a wonderful piece, and I've never seen an organ setup like this before. I used to play some, many years ago, and would consider trying again if I could put together an organ like this.
When time allows, please make and post up a narrative video desribing your ogan set-up, how you assembled it, and where you got the equipment. It looks like the perfect instrument for home practice and for portability to churches/places w/ no organ.
One of my all time fav organ pieces...thank you so much for playing it so lovely.......I'm just now learning this song in organ lessons! Thank you again and God Bless!
I had the privlege of seeing Mr. Fox perform this piece when I was in college. He was brilliant as a showman. But, this also showed what he could do with a serious piece of music like this. A very fine performance.
What a performance! The piece is wonderful and stirring, the organ sounds beautiful, and your playing is outstanding. I play OK, but you make me want to sit down for a long, serious practice. You've inspired me.
Awesome! I like Fox's arrangement even better than Bach's original (high praise from someone who likes Bach enough to own the "complete" (not exactly) Bach collection) and your performance was just like having Maestro Fox still here among us.
You've got a lot of talent, and let us know when you get some CDs out.
As far as getting a Hauptwerk instrument, check out crumhorn-labs (.) com. Thank you for the compliment on my playing. My teacher is Ken Udy, and I'd say that any organist would be lucky to have a teacher like him.
This piece is amazing. Keep up the good work. My organist played it this Sunday, which is his thanksgiving pull-it-all-out piece. He loves to slow it way down at the end and do an entirely different registration half-way through the piece. The organ is an IV/74 and includes an Antiphonal Division with 8' Trompette En Chamades. He showed them off today. I had the pleasure of sitting in the balcony for that one. *gags*
Sounds like the perfect organ for this piece. When it comes to this piece, bigger really is better. I can't think of any other pieces I play that are this demanding on the registration
Being a church organist, this is very new to me. You state "Hauptwork organs are affordable & practical." Can you give a wide ballpark estimate on what affordable is for what you're playing on?
It's hard to say because the configurations vary so much, but I'd say $10-20K for a really decent system (3-4 manuals, a fast computer, a few sample sets, and a multi-channel audio setup)
I would say that the organ depends on how much you want to spend on it. The program cost about 300 and comes with a wonderful beginner organ. If you really feel creative, you can "midify" organ parts such as the pedalboard and manuals and put them together. Currently my setup is a pedal board I converted for $600, the software $350 , a USB midi reader for $80, free bench, ikea table with legs for $75.
Your registration is spot on. Just one question. On some organ works even with the use of pistons and toe studs to switch from one registration to another, some works esp more symphonic compositions, still require the organist to manually select and deselect stops mid way though a performance. How do you do this with no side jambs and stops existing inside a computer?
Notice his touchscreen on the right side. It has all the stops. Many (most?) Hauptwerk users try for two screens due to the many stop tabs on most instruments.
Thanks! Hauptwerk organs are usually put together from a bunch of different parts, which is what makes them so affordable and practical. The software is made by Crumhorn-Labs, and the majority of the MIDI hardware comes from Classic MIDI.
It really is a great piece - I performed it today for my congregation. I added a pedal glissando at the end; the piece just needed a little extra something with only 9 ranks on my church organ. Got a good response though, Virgil Fox knew how to make catchy arrangements!

Whats with the flashing lights?! Loses something in the transition.
Lots of slurring going on. Update yourself on the technical aspect of Bach's articulation!
davlber221 9 months ago
@davlber221 Bach's articulation? Once Fox gets hold of it, it ain't Bach anymore!

It sounds just like Virgil Fox playing the Riverside Church organ. Just incredible.
Thank you so much. Wonderful instrument, wonderful organist.

Nice set up. Never thought about Ikea for the table. Are the keyboards Organworks or what? And you are only using one monitor.
Ya know, there is a new touchscreen from Dell for $300. I'm ordering two when HW4 is released. Good playing an good setup.

just for clarification since this post is from a few months ago, Hauptwerk now has a free "home" version without that triangle in the back ground.
I have a friend that has several consoles and I am thinking about purchasing one of them and setting up a proper Hauptwerk setup.
