Yeah, heard he got heavy influnced by George Orwell, and that is how it should be. Write about things that matter, wich very absent in todays mainstream music. More care about how they look on stage and video but the meanings fall falt. David Bowie always love you. Despite you are an old git now ;-)
He was planning on writing a musical based on George Orwell's 1984, but the Orwell family wouldn't give him permission to do it in the end. So he put a bunch of those songs on Diamond Dogs instead.
@Redsrevenge yah, yah that's what i thought. i thought we are the dead was on the diamond dogs album, and i know that album is about the aftermath of the apocolips i.e. future legend, but that would explain the 1984 part. yah, makes sense now. i didn't know anything about the orwell thing. but i do know that the transition between 'hot tramp' and whatever comes before it or after, i need to hear it again, is the best.!
yes, but a good read for readers, but go watch the movie, there's two. one from the 50's and another from the 80's they're both pretty scary, especially if your as government paranoid as i am, because of all the megadeth i listen to, lol.
Awesome.../like/ Dead Kennedys? No no no, you're mistaken! David Bowie is the ORIGINAL awesome ANYTHING :) We compare others to him, not vice-versa! :D
Much of Diamond Dogs (including we are the dead, 1984, and Big Brother) are references to George Orwell's 1984. The term savior is directly from the Novel. The acoustic break and closing chant have always chilled me.
Yeah, it's actually a result of him attempting to make a musical based on 1984 and being rejected by Orwell's Estate due to copyright, isn't it? We've just read 1984 in class and I told my teacher about Diamond Dogs. He wasn't as interested as I'd hoped, though. :C
With respect to the instructor, I guess some things never change. I would also share the fact that before the actual year 1984, it was really annoying that the novel was evaluated based on its accuracy in predicting the future. (yes I am that old).
Yeah, I was wondering about that, actually. I wasn't alive before '84, having just turned 18 last week, but I was sitting on the bus, thinking 'I wonder if people sat there thinking more and more each year closer to '84 that things weren't turning out that way? And what of the year 1984 itself?' Didn't they make a movie of it then?
Regardless of how accurate it turned out, though, it's still a really great read, and it DOES actually reflect real life lately, it seems, exaggerated, of course...
Yes Orwell's widow did not approve of Bowie's plans for making the movie in the '70s. When they eventually came around to making the 1984 movie, rumor has it that Bowie was approached for the lead, but turned it down because he was still bitter about the whole project. As a visionary artist this behavior makes perfect sense. Only Mr. Bowie knows for sure, but John Hurt does a fantastic job and you can see a rival performance by David Bowie in Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence. Cheers
It's more than a reference. He was going to make a stage production of the novel/film but never did ): Most of Diamond Dogs are songs that were going to be incorporated in it.
Dimond Dogs was going to be a Rock opera in the fashion of Tommy Wall etc but who knows someday ...but not today

I like this song a lot more than the song '1984' he did, which I think sounds too rushed, and fails to really show how amazing his voice sounds.
