  • Interesting escape. I will try tomorrow in my Judo class. Cheers mate.

  • I'm an orange belt in judo...and I promise you as a ju-jitsu black belt will not get out of my kesa gatame using that technique

  • good drill to practice kesa-gatami and the escape! thanks!

  • Mma training with kimonos??

  • Hi americanmambi, They are called "judogi". If you go to our website (the name is on the videos), there are dozens of videos in which the people are not wearing the judogis. This particular technique can be done with or without the gi. ayjay

  • Escaping from a lot of hold downs in competition is near impossible when the hold down is in complete form. The best escapes are the ones before you find yourself in a complete hold down, but it's worth a try

  • I have taken Classical Japanese Jiu Jitsu for nearly 10 years now, but I had never liked the whole idea that 2 men are so close with each other and pressing flesh. Yes, I am homophobic. It's just way way way too intimate.

  • @FishEaster That attitude isnt going to serve you well when you get tackled in the street and you are fighting for you or your loved ones life.

  • Another top video!

  • nice i've winned gold on the championchip ty for the escape

  • That's a nice flavor of an escape. Thanks for posting.

  • No....you have to break him forward and down and displace his hips forward..then take up the space you created and when he moves to regain control you bridge him over.

  • Hi ronin2167, Thanks for commenting, but this is one of many escapes from kesa gatame and happens to be the first escape we teach. There are few hard and fast rules. For examples of others we have videotaped, see our website. ayjay

  • @judo4mma The way I explained is our first way to do it. It sucks against a larger guy though. However...there are other ways to motivate the guy to change his hold so as to present an opportunity of escape.

  • I have serious problems escaping this, I've been doing Judo for about 20 hours now(4 weeks, 5 hours per week) the problem is I'm 6ft 3in and everyone at the club is lighter than I am (91 kg), my ground work is pretty good, its just this pin that gets me....

  • Greate scape, now I understand all the technical parts of it. Dave is a very good instructur and a very good guy. This yudo guys from hamilton rocks!!!!!!. Big hug from Spain... they know who I am...

  • I would've just gone to the knee's :) but this video has a good kesa gatame hold versus the bjj videos. Where their heads are exposed.

  • The only name I know for the below mentioned escape is called a "lapel choke or face bar into leg hook."

  • This is called the "Bridge and Roll" and it requires surprising strength.

The escape I prefer is for uki to use his free hand to reach up and lapel choke tori back towards his legs. Once tori is pushed far enough back, use the free leg on the same side as your free arm to "hook" around tori's neck and pull him off of you. Follow up immediatly with a juji-gatame.

If you have long legs, it's deadly! NO ONE will be able to hold you in kesa gatame. (I don't know the japanese term for it.)

  • Indeed, I done it and it works, big time. And I do have long legs since im usually taller than my opponents.

  • Sorry to disagree, but I'm MUCH smaller than the guys in my club and I can do this escape. It's not strength that's required, but leverage and positioning. Once your opponent is on the center of your mass, you can move him to one side or the other. We have videos of several other escapes from this groundhold on our website as well. You can see the website name on the video above. ayjay

  • @messagefrombilly I haven't seen this type of escape. Is there a video of it on the net?

  • @makavelimavi There are several versions of this escape on our website (see the name in the center of the above video). When you get to the website, look for Traditional Judo and then Ground Hold Escapes. ayjay

  • @messagefrombilly I haven't seen this type of escape. Is there a video of it on the net?

  • This is not MMA safe. Great BJJ or Judo competition technique though.

  • Why is it that people say things like this wont work for high level competitors? If you are a high level competitor then why are you looking on the internet for technique for one, and for two if you are not a high level competitor what makes you think you know what would work. Besides BJ Penn uses the very basic techniques because he knows them best, now that is high level.

  • Some people just like to do it in their spare time.

  • I like that you clearly show with your movement that it is about moving yourself in under the opponent more than pulling him on top of you.

  • and then finish off with a arm triangle. :)

  • thats interesting, gonna try this tommororw.

  • That's not going to work in real competition...

  • You're right it will be harder to pull off in an MMA match, but this directly aimed at Judo matches.

  • What made you think that it will be harder to pull it off in MMA with no gi and nothing much to hold on than judo with a judogi. This technique may work for novice but not for high level competitors.

  • What? I was agreeing with you that this move won't be nearly effective in MMA but this technique is focused more on judo matches.
