Przed tak wielkim Sakramentem upadajmy wszyscy wraz; Niech przed NowymTestamentem starych praw ustąpi czas; Co dla zmysłów niepojęte, niech dopełni wiara w nas. Bogu Ojcu i Synowi hołd po wszystkie nieśmy dni; Niech podaje wiek wiekowi hymn tryumfu, dzięki, czci; A równemu Im Duchowi niechaj wieczna chwala brzmi. Amen. PIĘKNE
The laudes on Sunday afternoon are the most precious memory from my childhood. Not much to do, just enjoy the blessed atmosphere and sing along with the hymns, especially this one.
When the Sacrament was shown, there was a heavenly chiming sound. Only many years later, I realized that it had not come from the Sacrament itself, but from bells being rung by a ministrant. I must have missed that, sitting among the crowd as a little boy.
This video brings back all the serenity and wonder; thank you
Indeed...bring back tradition, and restore the Church's former glory. All praise, honour and glory to the Blessed Sacrament on the altar, and may Our Lord be blessed by all creatures forever.
Bring back the Latin High Mass, so that Catholics all over the world would be able to follow the High Mass by means of their "Missel" (Massbook) no matter where they are in the World.....That would make the Holy Church truly universal again.
The mass was in Latin because Latin was the official language of the Roman Empire. When Catholicism was made the official religion of the Roman Empire by Constantine it adopted the Latin language.
I travel a lot for my work and I've always been able to follow the latin mass with my Latin/English missal but I've never been able to follow the New Mass in Chinese or Austrian or Ndebele ... all I did is stand and sit continuously with the rest of the people not understanding a word!
So the answer is now: Changing back to Latin so most of the people will not understand??? I do not get it... I travel a lot! I want people understand the word of mass, not changing to Latin because of the tourists (me included!!)
HottyHot2001, I am afraid te fallacy is in "I want people to understand the words of the mass". I am afraid praying is more about understanding the mass (or whatever other liturgical service) than about understanding the WORDS of it.
this tune has become part of the hymnal 1982 and we sing it with different words every Good Friday! that hymnal is so good at collecting these "ancient treasures." haha corny!
I am Catholic myself but I believe the Latin mass is NOT the answer to current problems of our church.
Most people around the world are not even able to speak ANY Latin and I would LOVE to understand what the priest talks during service. So why Latin? What is wrong about English, German, French, Chinese etc?!
The Catholic Church states that Latin has pride of place over all other languages. This doesn't mean that we can't have vernacular masses, but Latin is the official language of the Church. Now, if the Church were to change this practice and allow only Latin masses, then we must obey that. The thing about Latin is it unites us. We are supposed to be taught so that we can understand mass anywhere in the world. By the way, the books have Latin printed on one side and the vernacular on the other.
Sorry, but you might be mistaken. Yes, maybe you and me, we can understand Latin but most of the people around the globe do not know Latin and so I believe it devides, it seperates the Church hierachy from the ordenary people.
Let's not only talk about Europe and the US, what about India, China, Philippens, S America - those people need a service for their hearts not in Latin, sorry!
heh, i believe both you and HolocronPro are right, all considerations should be taken into account, and somhow be conformed to be in accord with all Catholics. However for the very reason you have laid out, i think there is little chance the Pope will ORDER a radicle change back to the tridentine mass. btw,to throw in a bit of history, there was a time when people less educated then ourselves attend the latin mass, and learned :) but its a working progress i believe...
It is not only the Latin mass I have to say. Latin masses where available even before. The point is that the priest will celebrate the mass now WITHOUT the people attending! Facing to altar is ABSOLUTLY the wrong signal... Yes, he would be the leader (symbol) for good but I would like to see a mass as communion, together!
I the past people attend Latin mass because there was NO OTHER!
You're right that most people don't understand Latin, but I think that was the original intent: to have sort of a unified way. And many people know the traditional hymns, etc. A priest once told me that he was somewhere out of the country with priests from all over the world. They spoke different languages, but at mass, everyone was singing all the traditional hymns and participating in the mass because they knew them. I don't know much Latin at all, but I still get so much out of a Latin mass.
yes its true..the fact that it is theocentric...as you can observed hottyhot2001...all gestures in the latin mass, symbolise the greatness of the Lord and all to God.thats the fact..language is not the problem...it is not a hinder nor object to what is bad...
As far as facing the altar, I think it's meant as as a sign that the priest is offering the sacrifice as one with the people of God, to God. They also used to face east as an homage to Jesus' rising from the dead, if I'm not mistaken.
Again, I'm not saying that our regular, local masses are bad or that we should go back to only the Tridentine, but that there's a place for both.
Of course but we had that before, we HAD Latin masses even before the decision of the Pope! So the intention was different, that's what I think! The tridentine mass is no solution to any of the problem the Catholic Church is facing in today's world, or am I wrong?
amm..roman catholic belives that..we are bound of doctrine and tradition..doctrine is what the teaching.tradition is custom or practice.therefore..tradition cannot be separated..in fact most of all the saints in the church..is the latin mass that there going to...and the fact that latin mass is par excellence and never and cannot be doubted.only the motive of the priest but still..latin mass is perfect.sorry..
Well God is perfect and the church is not, even the church itself says that it is holy AND sinful.
I love Catholic tradition but I believe that there is TOO much tradition. Everything is done because of tradition! Facing people's problems should be more in focus, I believe!
The argument with the SAINTS is stupid, following that we could say let's all speak the language in mass which Jesus used.
yes..your statement is true..i firmly believe that..but what i meant is the mass..not the church..the mass is a perfect worship that can offer to God..and the fact that Jesus is the eternal High Priest and at the same time the victim...too much tradition??it is not the based...there is no such thing as "too much" tradition...
Oh yes, I truely believe there can be a thing as too much tradition! Let me explain as good as possible: The Catholic Church is 2000 years old, the mass we currently have is the base. But Latin was established because of Rome. NOW, we have to accept that, the church is bigger as ever. Latin has European roots, not Indian, Chinese, South American.
so??it is the reason for not saying latin mass?even the popes know that the latin mass or the tridentine mass is a par escellence. though mass today is just the exhortation of the ww2. but hey hotty..still i admire you for your sincerity..really appreciate that..so..thank you..
Jesus did not give as a MANUAL how to celebrate the mass and LATIN was definetly NOT his language. But anyway, I have traveled around the world and visited many Catholic masses in different language. The worst thing I can imagine is a Latin mass somewhere in an Indian village. Even the Apostels spoke different language!
The Latin Mass is a good step in a return to a universal Mass. Surely you must understand that translations are not 'exact' - and the actual meaning of different phrases have changed as they are changed into the vernacular. This was the intent of a universal Latin Mass to begin with (incidentally at a time when the entire known world spoke Latin in addition to native language). My question though - is why do you think people in an Indian village are less capable of synthesizing Latin ?
And by the way - Latin is also ideal because it is a 'dead' language... A dead language is a language that is no longer 'evolving' - therefore the meanings and connotations of words and phrases remain constant. Think about how much the word 'discrimination' has changed in meaning over the last 50 years.
First, Jesus did not speak Latin! So why should it be universal?!
Second, do you accuse me of thinking Indians are more stupid? That is not true! I myself cannot speak Latin and I do not want to sit in church understand only 50%! Too little I think!!
Learning Latin does NOT support the live of porr Indians, or Africans! It is an old EUROPEAN language!
The first businessmen didn't speak English, so why is English considered the new universal language? Stuff happens. And to think Jesus, as the SOn of God, cannot "do" anything is blasphemous. He understands all, and by giving Peter the key to heaven, allowed him and his predecessors to "bound in earth, so too in heaven, etc."
You are not forbidden to pray the Mass internally in your vernacular. It is the public prayer/song that must be in Latin at the High Mass.
Why did the Church change the Latin Mass in the first place? To make mass more "human" all around the world. I attend many services around the world, in languages I did not understand a word! But it made me happy that the people of that country could understand GOD's word!
The beauty of the Latin Rite is that it unifies us all in one Universal Treasure we all must adore regardless of our native tongues. I speak Spanish, but when I hear this music I think of all my Catholic brothers around the globe. viva Cristo Rey! Dominus Vobiscum!
Giusto! I agree completely with you. I' m italian, only catholics are a real community. We are mistis body of christ! Only we!! Not protestants. EXTRA ECCLESIA NULLA SALUS
Actually, if you look at the documents of Vatican II, you'll see that it was not directly responisible the destruction that followed. Sadly, "innovators" took over and used "the spirit of Vatican II" as their primary excuse.
JESUS, Tibi se cor meum [To you I give my heart]. I wish I could that totally. I find this one of the MOST BEAUTIFUL of all songs. Thank you St Thomas Aquinas for these words.

Remember the rite of baptism in the catholic church:
- What do you ask of the Church of God?
- faith
- What does faith bring to you?
- Life everlasting
If you were baptized, you always had faith. Now there is time for you to care about your faith. It should grow and be strong.

Why has the Church changed so much? Can we recover what was lost? Is this our test of the time?
OMIMAN73 3 years ago 5

The beautif of the Gregorian plainsong...

When Catholicism was made the official religion of the Roman Empire by Constantine it adopted the Latin language.
krevzi 3 years ago
I travel a lot for my work and I've always been able to follow the latin mass with my Latin/English missal but I've never been able to follow the New Mass in Chinese or Austrian or Ndebele ... all I did is stand and sit continuously with the rest of the people not understanding a word!
Magabella555 3 years ago
So the answer is now: Changing back to Latin so most of the people will not understand??? I do not get it... I travel a lot! I want people understand the word of mass, not changing to Latin because of the tourists (me included!!)
HottyHot2001 3 years ago
HottyHot2001, I am afraid te fallacy is in "I want people to understand the words of the mass". I am afraid praying is more about understanding the mass (or whatever other liturgical service) than about understanding the WORDS of it.

I am Catholic myself but I believe the Latin mass is NOT the answer to current problems of our church.
Most people around the world are not even able to speak ANY Latin and I would LOVE to understand what the priest talks during service. So why Latin? What is wrong about English, German, French, Chinese etc?!
HottyHot2001 4 years ago
The Catholic Church states that Latin has pride of place over all other languages. This doesn't mean that we can't have vernacular masses, but Latin is the official language of the Church. Now, if the Church were to change this practice and allow only Latin masses, then we must obey that. The thing about Latin is it unites us. We are supposed to be taught so that we can understand mass anywhere in the world. By the way, the books have Latin printed on one side and the vernacular on the other.
HolocronPro 4 years ago
Sorry, but you might be mistaken. Yes, maybe you and me, we can understand Latin but most of the people around the globe do not know Latin and so I believe it devides, it seperates the Church hierachy from the ordenary people.
Let's not only talk about Europe and the US, what about India, China, Philippens, S America - those people need a service for their hearts not in Latin, sorry!
HottyHot2001 4 years ago
heh, i believe both you and HolocronPro are right, all considerations should be taken into account, and somhow be conformed to be in accord with all Catholics. However for the very reason you have laid out, i think there is little chance the Pope will ORDER a radicle change back to the tridentine mass. btw,to throw in a bit of history, there was a time when people less educated then ourselves attend the latin mass, and learned :) but its a working progress i believe...
AquilaEla 4 years ago
It is not only the Latin mass I have to say. Latin masses where available even before. The point is that the priest will celebrate the mass now WITHOUT the people attending! Facing to altar is ABSOLUTLY the wrong signal... Yes, he would be the leader (symbol) for good but I would like to see a mass as communion, together!
I the past people attend Latin mass because there was NO OTHER!
HottyHot2001 4 years ago
You're right that most people don't understand Latin, but I think that was the original intent: to have sort of a unified way. And many people know the traditional hymns, etc. A priest once told me that he was somewhere out of the country with priests from all over the world. They spoke different languages, but at mass, everyone was singing all the traditional hymns and participating in the mass because they knew them. I don't know much Latin at all, but I still get so much out of a Latin mass.
HolocronPro 4 years ago
yes its true..the fact that it is theocentric...as you can observed hottyhot2001...all gestures in the latin mass, symbolise the greatness of the Lord and all to God.thats the fact..language is not the problem...it is not a hinder nor object to what is bad...
secretdarrylsd 4 years ago
As far as facing the altar, I think it's meant as as a sign that the priest is offering the sacrifice as one with the people of God, to God. They also used to face east as an homage to Jesus' rising from the dead, if I'm not mistaken.
Again, I'm not saying that our regular, local masses are bad or that we should go back to only the Tridentine, but that there's a place for both.
HolocronPro 4 years ago
Of course but we had that before, we HAD Latin masses even before the decision of the Pope! So the intention was different, that's what I think! The tridentine mass is no solution to any of the problem the Catholic Church is facing in today's world, or am I wrong?
HottyHot2001 4 years ago
amm..roman catholic belives that..we are bound of doctrine and tradition..doctrine is what the teaching.tradition is custom or practice.therefore..tradition cannot be separated..in fact most of all the saints in the church..is the latin mass that there going to...and the fact that latin mass is par excellence and never and cannot be doubted.only the motive of the priest but still..latin mass is perfect.sorry..
secretdarrylsd 4 years ago
Well God is perfect and the church is not, even the church itself says that it is holy AND sinful.
I love Catholic tradition but I believe that there is TOO much tradition. Everything is done because of tradition! Facing people's problems should be more in focus, I believe!
The argument with the SAINTS is stupid, following that we could say let's all speak the language in mass which Jesus used.
HottyHot2001 4 years ago
yes..your statement is true..i firmly believe that..but what i meant is the mass..not the church..the mass is a perfect worship that can offer to God..and the fact that Jesus is the eternal High Priest and at the same time the victim...too much tradition??it is not the based...there is no such thing as "too much" tradition...
secretdarrylsd 4 years ago
Oh yes, I truely believe there can be a thing as too much tradition! Let me explain as good as possible: The Catholic Church is 2000 years old, the mass we currently have is the base. But Latin was established because of Rome. NOW, we have to accept that, the church is bigger as ever. Latin has European roots, not Indian, Chinese, South American.
HottyHot2001 4 years ago
so??it is the reason for not saying latin mass?even the popes know that the latin mass or the tridentine mass is a par escellence. though mass today is just the exhortation of the ww2. but hey hotty..still i admire you for your sincerity..really appreciate that..so..thank you..
secretdarrylsd 4 years ago
Jesus did not give as a MANUAL how to celebrate the mass and LATIN was definetly NOT his language. But anyway, I have traveled around the world and visited many Catholic masses in different language. The worst thing I can imagine is a Latin mass somewhere in an Indian village. Even the Apostels spoke different language!
HottyHot2001 4 years ago
The Latin Mass is a good step in a return to a universal Mass. Surely you must understand that translations are not 'exact' - and the actual meaning of different phrases have changed as they are changed into the vernacular. This was the intent of a universal Latin Mass to begin with (incidentally at a time when the entire known world spoke Latin in addition to native language). My question though - is why do you think people in an Indian village are less capable of synthesizing Latin ?
paglia2000 3 years ago 4
And by the way - Latin is also ideal because it is a 'dead' language... A dead language is a language that is no longer 'evolving' - therefore the meanings and connotations of words and phrases remain constant. Think about how much the word 'discrimination' has changed in meaning over the last 50 years.
paglia2000 3 years ago 2
First, Jesus did not speak Latin! So why should it be universal?!
Second, do you accuse me of thinking Indians are more stupid? That is not true! I myself cannot speak Latin and I do not want to sit in church understand only 50%! Too little I think!!
Learning Latin does NOT support the live of porr Indians, or Africans! It is an old EUROPEAN language!
HottyHot2001 3 years ago
The first businessmen didn't speak English, so why is English considered the new universal language? Stuff happens. And to think Jesus, as the SOn of God, cannot "do" anything is blasphemous. He understands all, and by giving Peter the key to heaven, allowed him and his predecessors to "bound in earth, so too in heaven, etc."
You are not forbidden to pray the Mass internally in your vernacular. It is the public prayer/song that must be in Latin at the High Mass.
kostumeman 3 years ago
Why did the Church change the Latin Mass in the first place? To make mass more "human" all around the world. I attend many services around the world, in languages I did not understand a word! But it made me happy that the people of that country could understand GOD's word!
HottyHot2001 3 years ago
The beauty of the Latin Rite is that it unifies us all in one Universal Treasure we all must adore regardless of our native tongues. I speak Spanish, but when I hear this music I think of all my Catholic brothers around the globe. viva Cristo Rey! Dominus Vobiscum!

Actually, if you look at the documents of Vatican II, you'll see that it was not directly responisible the destruction that followed. Sadly, "innovators" took over and used "the spirit of Vatican II" as their primary excuse.
