  • Thanks for the tutorial! Do you know if it's possible to (pre-)select a patch in mainstage while you're playing with the previous patch? So you can search for patches while you're playing the current song? I would love to play with mainstage and use A LOT of sounds during gigs, but I don't have time to search for the patch after each song. I know it's possible to arrange patches, but I don't feel like changing the whole setlist in mainstage every gig.

  • great vid. your band must sound great!!

  • Thanks man, this was incredible helpful. I've cobbled a rig together with xmas money only to find out that an Axiom isn't so compatible with the Mac programs. I really just want to do some basic looping stuff with keys, drum pad, and guitar, maybe vocals. If you have any pointers on guides that are better than the mind numbing manual, it would be greatly appreciated.

  • @andyfunn my axiom works just fine with my mac. whatever program your using going into the midi settings

  • can i create electronic music with mainstage or mainstage 2 ?

  • Good stuff!

  • thank you!!

  • can you tell me the specs on your macbook? curious to see what the limit is for mainstage

  • Thank you!

  • Ok, i used this at ashow today and the thing started fuzzing worse and worse... so i had to turn it off and back on mid show.. is this a sample rate thing?? connection, clck issue HELP

  • How do I get the sound to play through the venue's PA system or my own personal amp? Would I need to use an audio interface? I hope my question isn't too confusing! Thanks!

  • @CoreyAspire You need to use a D.I box to do this. It will split the signal coming from your mac; one signal to your amp and the other to the PA. You might need to use two mono DI boxes to easily split a stereo signal

  • Hey, Thanx for the video man. Really learned alot. I only have another problem. My memory is pretty when I open a new empty concert in mainstage.(cpu 2% memory used: 71%). I have a Macbook pro 2.0 ghz icore, 4gb memory, standaard hdd (500gb 5400 rpm) and only Logic 9 as program installed. I think this should be enough to have a low memory in "Mainstage". What can i do lower the memory?? Thanx,

  • Man, you helped me A LOT! thank you!

  • I was wondering if you could help me out by telling me how you change sounds or songs without using your mouse. Thanks!

  • Thanks for the demo! I appreciate your insight. I got mainstage and im totally stoked. Im using my Yamaha mo8 as a midi controller so I want to try to map it out on mainstage to see if its fully compatable. Wish me luck!

  • That is very helpful......have you done any video dealing with guitar on mainstage....???

  • In Perform mode, are you using your laptop keyboard or your midi keyboard to switch between patches and parameters?

Also, do you use your headphone out to send to an amp or PA, or are you using some sort of PC card with higher end audio outputs.

My only criticism of your videos is that you leave out some details that are important to the process, like I mentioned above. Thanks

  • You're awesome, bro. Thanks a bunch.

  • Hey if you don't mind me asking what macbook were you using at the time? I'm thinking of following your advice here and it would give me pointers on how powerful macbook should I get for mainstage. Thanks!

  • first of all, thank you so much for these tutorials, they are really helpfull :) i wanted to ask, i compose music in logic, but i want to play live but i dont want to play with logic live, how can i use this program live like a dj, i mean the things i record on logic i want to transfer to mainstage and affect them with external controls thanks

  • please SPEAK UP!

  • how can you make the sound come out a PA System? i want to use it live but when i connect via midi my sound comes out my computer speakers not the PA System :(

  • @go433 I had the same problem. So I figured just connect the computer to the PA. So I got an adapter for my headphone jack from long & mcquade to be able to plug my patch cable into my computer through that 3.5mm jack to 1/4 inch converter. Im not fully satisfied with the sound its producing but it somewhat does the trick.

  • nice video !

  • Thanks for your good work!

  • how dees this compare to ableton live

  • Thanks for the great video. I am trying to use your video to understand how to use the Roland SPD-S as the midi controller and although it's helping, it's not specific enough. Do you know of anyone that has posted videos specifically for the SPD-S?

    Thanks

  • very informative, , thanx, but whats the difference with mainstage and mainstage 2??

  • Thanks for this great tutorial!

  • Woukd this work on a 2008 Macbook Pro, 2.4ghz, 4gb Ram?

I want to use it live, would it be sweet on this or should i buy a new MACBOOK

  • Thanks for the video man, i just started using logic today, and this is very helpful!

  • I REALLY want to buy logic

But can you tell me if mainstage is good for what i want :

Almost all my songs i want to play live contains playback like drums and bass. All i want to do is an easy way to have my loops and playback ready to play without having to load a project each time the song is over. I want it to be really dynamic.

Like when i want to start the playback, i just hit "space" then when the song is finished i click space again and the next playback starts. Is it possible? thanks!

  • hey man... nice video...

but i have one question: how can i assign a midi channel for each of one instrument created? my desire is set some instruments and then change the midi channel by my controller

  • Question I Love Mainstage, However How can you connect two midi controllers to controll two separate sounds in Mainstage or Logic? If you have the Time. Thanks sooo much

  • hi, i'm new to "mainstage" so plz anybody hlp? i need to know how to attach my electric guitar to my mac.... is it by putting the guitar cable into the mac's mic socket?!! or is it by a preamplifier?!

  • Anyone has any idea how to configure Mainstage to be able to use an external sustain pedal...i get the sounds but cant get them sustained..... Thanx guys would appreciate any help...

  • Thanks, very usefull info.

  • how did u do the sample? what kind of midi controller do you have?

  • do you have to have logic to use mainstage..... or can it be a standalone program for live

  • Great video! Thanks alot! Convincing me to buy Mainstage. Great work again!

  • Thanks really helpful intro to Mainstage - got me going. Is it possible to send a program change to an alias instrument on patch change so I can load up B4 hammond and have different hammond sounds on each patch? Can't get it to work. cheers Adam

  • What do you use to switch instruments? Is it on your controller or just up and down on laptop?

  • Great video! keep 'em coming

  • I like this. very impressive.

  • I have Mainstage and have been intimidated by it and have yet to use it in my solo act but you, Kellen, have fired me up showing the simplicity of setting up. I also need to purchase a GiO foot control loops any ideas here? for Thank you.

  • this is great man...thanks...i use mainstage 2 alot. whats also great about it is you can change the patches while playing without the "silent changeover time" that would happen in a regular keyboard...even high end keyboards like motif XS8...for example you can be playing piano, sustain the sound with a pedal and change to a layered piano and strings patch seamlessly....love it. i like the tips on mapping. i'm getting a M-Audio Prokeys 88 controller and this info is very useful. thanks.

  • We use mainstage 2 for all of our vocals. We are having issues with overdriving the venues Soundcraft and Mackie boards... Why would that be? If we lower the master volume, we end up bringing up the noise floor too much and getting feedback. Any suggestions?

  • This is great! Question: Can I set a release to my sounds or layers of sounds without having to use a foot pedal? Seems like every sound I play, when I let go of keys, it stops immediately, not a nice fade out, or release. Any help would be greatly appreiciated!! thx.

  • Thanks dude

  • Great tuturial man thx.

Can i have this Mainstage running on my laptop Windows?... (joke, but not joking)...

    GRRRRRRRRRRRRR

  • This is great man, thank you very much.

  • Great setup tutorial!

I don't know if you've covered this elsewhere, but what is your hardware setup like? Also, what driver settings are you using?

I'd like to start using Mainstage more live, but latency is a dealbreaker.

  • n00b question but does anyone know how much of this kind of stuff is possible in Pro Tools??

    thanks!

  • How do you switch sounds? Is it possible to create a list of all the sounds you play during a concert and switch through them with a pedal?

  • In layout mode, assign a button to your foot controller. Then in edit mode, click on that button, then go to the browser at the bottom to the "actions" file. Then select what action you want it to perform. In this case "next patch" or "previous patch". This is not limited to just a foot switch.

  • I think thats what he said actually, no?

  • Is there any way that you can save a song? Do you just save it as a set? My band repeats songs a lot and I was just wondering if you could save the patch list for a single song easily...

  • yes you can create several songs (blue files on the left) and then you can save the concert under File>save concert.

  • thanks a lot for this vid.. now I won´t be able to leave the house, I´m gonna stay playing around with sounds. I play guitar so I´ve been playing around with the built in guitar patches but I didn´t know how to start a new rig jaja... thanks a lot

  • Awesome vid! Just what's required...how do you alternate between patches without using the mouse though? Suppose you wanna make a quick change, how would you do it?

  • Thats a great question rjk1482, i have been wondering the same thing. it would be great to have a foot pedal controler for the guitar effects

  • if you can get a MIDI foot controller, you can plug it into the MIDI in on the keyboard or for the guitar you would need an interface with MIDI, it will work the same way... but you can do it... hope this works for you

  • midi foot controller.

  • you can plug in a MIDI foot switch into the MIDI jack of the keyboard or if you have a guitar you will need an interface with MIDI built in but it will work the same way

  • NIce 1 for the vid. Exactly what we need.

    thanks and keep making them.

  • mate you`re a legend....

  • this is great, i'm going through all your videos now.

    Looking forward to learning.

  • How are you controlling all the virtual nobs and levels at 1:55 without using the mouse?

Do you have an external board connected via midi or something?

  • nice. can i use also external plug-in or for example reason instruments under ReWire?

  • you can use an application called soundflower which does the same thing as re-wire, but mainstage doesn't have rewire support yet.

  • thanks
