  • I love the Holst Suites.

  • After almost 11 years of music I was never able to perform this master piece in its entirety until now!! Same for the Second Suite and I finally get to perform both this semester!! The Bass Trombone parts are fun but I do miss the Euphonium parts on the first Suite.

  • I did enjoy it, thank you.

  • Cornets awww yeah!!!

  • OUT OF TUNE!!!!!!

  • @poopoo111222333 Which parts are you referring to?

  • @poopoo111222333 Umm, I think you're deaf....it sounds amazing.

  • @PenguinzRuleTheWorld Don't be so harsh, let's hear what he has to say. After all, I do know that when I uploaded this song, Youtube DID kind of distort the audio compared to the original recording. Although I haven't noticed anything particularly obvious, I love this song so much that maybe I'm just a little a little hesitant to hear that it's out of tune.

  • @EliteHunter02 With a username like that, I don't think (s)he is very credible....With this being the Marine Corps Band, I'm sure they practice quite a bit and the director would not accept 'out of tune' playing. It's very annoying when people get behind their keyboard and act like experts when in reality, they're really quite clueless. I'm no expert, but I've played/listened to this song enough to be able to identify out of tune parts. And there are none.

  • @PenguinzRuleTheWorld Chances are (s)he twelve, so I wouldn't worry too much about his/her thoughts or opinions.

  • Always loved opening this off as the lone tuba player.

  • go marines!!! hoo-rah!!!

  • im pretty sure you missed the beginning of the piece where its just the low brass...either that, or this low brass section sucks.....

  • @Genphylar do you know wtf a low brass section is? because i'm pretty sure i jizzed when that fuckin tuba started in.

  • My favorite part of this is either The 16th notes in Chaccone or the solos for Bb clarinet in the beginning and middle of Intermezzo

  • This was great. I played bass clarinet in this piece when I played with the Glendale Community College Band, Glendale, AZ and it was great fun!!

  • Anybody here play e flat clarinet on this? I usually play b flat clarinet but just recently got put on e flat and im real excited even tho i havent received the "baby" yet ;)...it has some pretty cool parts!

  • @marissajane94 You have to play the sixteenth notes , but the are fun and im not sure what other parts

  • Euphonium for life!!!

  • Oh, that long clarinet riff in the first movement! Except faster xD

  • represent bass trombone! :)

  • Hate playing the intermezzo on clarinet -.-

  • @billismienalien4ever Haha, that's the best movement on the clarinet! I love it!

  • FRENCH HORN!!! :D

  • Im playing clarinet in this song and i really love it. its just so....fascinating (pretty sure i just spelled that wrong).

  • I'm playing this piece in my high school band.

I am a freshman, and am very lucky to have become 1st chair among all of the other B flat Clarinet players.

I get to play the solos, and I have completely fell in love with this glorious song.

    Thank you very much, Holst.(:

  • @kaeladianne97 I'm a clarinette player and I'm a senior and a sophomore is first chair. I got the solos because I know what is required to play like a soloist. And I played it better. :)

  • @mcbethlovely Clarinet*

I'm sorry, but it's spelled Clarinet... take it from someone who has been playing for 8 years.

  • @sasukekuun83 maybe he/shes french..

  • @jjezttt true, didn't of that

  • BASS CLARINETS FTW!

  • This recording is simply astounding, everything else sounds like garbage after listening to this.

  • this piece is developmented for free breezing, free to play, without difficult formules.

Great piece from mr. Holst. Every instrument has a solo function, without difficulty, even expression.

I wonder, who will correspondate with me about the build, of this composition. I mean, talk about the I think the meaning of the composer. My email is..

    fokkertje25@hotmail.com

  • I go to North Gwinnett. What district is Newnan in?

  • I played bassoon for this piece in my high schools symphonic band in it was the most fun thing ever!

  • One of the most fun band pieces I've ever played :D

    Long live euphonium!

  • There are some gorgeous clarinet parts in here, I'm playing this on flute and it is proving to be quite the challenge. Mainly because of the long rests XD

  • Guess whose high school is playing this at GMEA? Mine!

  • @MrAKL83194 What school?

  • @Joey10Thompson10 Newnan High School. I'm really excited because I love this piece so much.

  • Euphonium player that just finished preforming this piece, loved it. Though i do also enjoy the solo from second suite in F

  • Um yeah. Played this in middle school and what I played is an insult to this beautiful piece

  • Soprano Saxophone! FUCK YEA-

    No one?

  • Love this piece. I rest for almost half of it. Gotta love the Bari Sax.

  • @jaggedstar2013 You get a solo

  • By the way, this is MY high school band performing this.... Just joking! :D I wish. Though we did very well. xD

  • They say a Bass Clarinet can never defeat an entire low brass section. I decided to take on that challenge, and now they jelly. Is it satisfying to hear "Low Brass play louder, a BASS clarinet is playing louder than you." Mind you I am just one player against 3 tubas, 7 trombones, and 1 all-state Bass Trombone player. :\

  • @ffrmaster34 You go! Bass Clarinet, Represent! :D

  • @ffrmaster34 The explanation to that is that they play too softly.

  • @ffrmaster34 heh, bass clarinets rock!

  • Comment removed

  • Trumpet. . Need I say more?

  • Trombone represent!!! Playing this song in my freshman year!

  • ugh... clarinet... its so difficult for me :(!

  • Gustav Holst - Orchestra musicians of all instruments, cultures, languages, orchestras and nations, we salute you! Thank you for giving the world this extraordinary piece of music that has changed the life of any musicians who has ever played it or heard. THANK YOU!

  • I'm going to get play this in my All Region Band. Life=Complete

  • BASS to the CLARINET!!!

  • I Love this piece....enough said.

  • Yes we can get some flute loving! and some piccolo! my band is playing this piece this year and i love it! i have the piccolo solo at the end of the second movement lol its 5 notes of pure awesome!

  • Can we get some flute love going on?

  • My school's wind ensemble played this two years ago (my Sophomore year), and this year we're playing Second Suite in F. Man oh man do I love Holst's pieces. ♥

  • TUBA!!!!!

  • GO WOODWINDS !!!!!!!!

  • @xxxhankxxx95 GO LOW BASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Thanks for posting this... nice to hear how it sounds when the pros take a swing at it. We did the first movement in honor band my junior year in high school (DoDDS-E, 1997) and the segment from 0:40 to 1:46 was part of the clarinet audition. I freaked a little bit when I saw it for the first time, ended up taking first chair and had a killer time with the whole thing. It's a wondeful piece of music that every wind player should be exposed to at some point in their life.

  • Wrong band in description.

  • 建中樂旗小成發的曲子‼

    讚*\(^o^)/*

  • Is it just me, or is the oboe quite soft at the start of the second movement? It's playing the same melody as the clarinet (or at least it is in what we're playing at the minute), but I can't hear it here. That said, as an oboist, I always think we're not being admired enough :)

  • go baritones!!!! or as previously stated... Euphoniums!!!!!!!!

  • Hm. I wonder how difficult this would be to transpose into a string arrangement. :D While it sounds amazing with the band instruments, as a hardcore string player, I can't help but think that the bass and cello would carry that glorious bassline a bit better. ;D

That being said, it's quite amazing just as it is. <3

  • @ZephImmortal It was originally written for a string orchestra I believe. Holst wanted to do something for a band, so he made an arrangement from the original piece.

  • Beautiful French Horn solo

  • I think when the clarinet with the trumpet duet is going on in the Intermezzo was an oversight on the clarinet... the trumpet was far too loud...

  • Tuba Player! Im playing this now in school.....in love.

  • Euphonium solos for this song/movements are pretty easy.

  • the band I'm in got the music for this today, all I can say is that it's going to be amazing! It's just one of those songs that make you grin!

  • Bass Clarinet! Played with local band in summer now with 6th form concert band.

  • Lot of euph's watching this...any oregon?

  • my high school band read this piece today and i love it, i play Tuba by the way :D!!!

  • can play the euphonium and flute part for this <3

  • Fuk yall Trombone lets get it

  • Go Tuba!!!! Represent

  • Feels good to be 1st cornet <3

  • MAI 1ST GRAED BAND IS PLAEING THIS SONG. FIRST CLARENETS IN THE HOUSE!!!!!

  • @super143cookies 1st grade. its not what u play it is how well u play it in this case i dont think u are very good

  • @super143cookies Don't even try to troll, man. You can't pull it off. :)

  • i was the euphonium for this movement! knapp 2010!!

  • What i really like about the first suite in E flat is the styles that Holst placed in each movement.

Chaconne is broad and slow, Intermezzo is bright and light while March is stately but moving.

All of this styles range differently, but they relate to each other.

I really like the Intermezzo because as said, Mezzo means middle, and we can assume that inter means *into* so this means into middle

  • the last movement of this song is so unbelievably good all of the time

  • i am currently playing this in my schools wind ensemble!!!! GO FLUTES!!!!!!

  • What band is playing this? It sounds...different than I've ever heard it before and I never wish to hear it any other way again.

  • @falcons1988 I love the trumpet part for this haha

  • i played this 2 years ago. go euphoniums!!!

  • The third movement killed my lungs, but this song is AMAZING! :) Tuba players in da house? xD

  • @Lcander101 It killed my lip, I was playing the trumpet part

  • @falcons1988 trumpet or cornet?

  • @jesse09143

The 1st Cornet part. It was a killer at the end of the whole suite

  • Was first chair trumpet in my old high school band when we played this song. I absolutely enjoyed every minute of it, especially the whole second movement for obvious trumpet-related reasons.

  • I'm playing this piece for a college wind ensemble in california!

  • love this song i played it in concert band my senior year of high school. and it was awesome!

  • playing this with our junior concert band. great piece

  • 2nd cornet! :DD

  • I played the Bass Drum for this piece in High School. I literally got to hit it as hard as possible at 9:24...

    What a masterpiece!

  • 4:00 greatest ever!

  • One of the greatest songs of all time

  • I played this in a Wind Ensemble its freaking epic, I shed manly tears of awesomeness we played in so beautifully.

  • How do you dislike this?!

  • This is so awesome. I hope I play this in college, because I know my high school band isn't going to be able to do it. We'll try though :P

  • Euphonium Players, UNITE!!!

  • @xxTheDutchBoyxx thatll be me in a month!!

  • I love this song... I play sax and the first movement is our audition piece

  • The oboe part was so difficult but so much fun. Even as an asthmatic hitting and trilling the solo high parts and scales all by myself :o) beautiful piece, as always!

  • 1:12 shit just got real

  • We are doing this with a band of about 20 people, and I am the only clarinet. It will be interesting!

  • Played Euph. for this..... GORGEOUS piece.

  • ok...so my friend told me that we are playing this in my high school. i havent seen the music yet because she saw it afterschool while putting the music in folders. any clue on how difficult or easy the oboe part is?

  • @tuttifruityxDD I can't speak for the oboe part because I play trombone, but I can say that my high school band was able to play this song without much difficulty, so it can't be too difficult. Besides, it's in Eb.

  • @tuttifruityxDD It's not too hard, and you get a duet with the flute solo in chaconne. I played the flute solo when my band played this last year, and when we worked on it in sectionals we always had the oboist with us, so I got to hear her part. It's not hard at all, really. At least, it didn't seem any harder than the flute part. Good luck!

  • I played this song in high school and it is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever been lucky enough to perform....it is breathtaking.

  • My high school is doing this song right now! It's so much fun to play!

  • @purplebread1 I'm so glad for you that you're getting to learn this song....we got in my sophomore and then my senior year they brought it back the first time around I was playing clarinet. My senior year I was playing Bass Clarinet.

  • Our band teacher (and band) liked this piece so much, our marching band pieces are based off these, with the actual beginning and ending.

  • We got this the other day. :D

    So awesome.

  • Our band got this today, sounds great. I'm first bassoon :)

  • I had the honor of being first chair tuba player in my high school's top ensemble and playing this. This is a cornerstone piece of any musicians high school/college experience.

  • @Modnar2011 Yay I was first chair tuba when I was in high shcool

  • In all of my years of playing, this is my most favorite piece. I will never forget my experience and the people I shared it with. Truly a musical masterpiece! Thank you Dr. Gage!

  • This entire piece is my favorite that I've played, but the third movement = full-out music-gasm

  • The Clarinet section just went "nom nom nom" on altissimo notes

  • The trumpet solo, 2nd movement, was always my favorite. It was well worth it to play it as expressively as you could, thinking about some long lost whatever. It could always bring tears to my ears. The clarinets are just so beautiful.

  • This song is so beautiful, i wish i was in a band that is capable of doing it justice...

  • I love the cornet part at 9:30!

  • This brings back the fondest of high school memories!

  • I kept a copy of the solo clarinet part from when my band played it :)

  • Which wind ensemble is this recording of? Wonderfully played.

  • @crushingbelial like it says right in the beginning, "Performed by the United States Marine Corp Band"

  • @bbbbbum ah my bad. it doesn't say it in title or description. I often won't watch a video if it's just audio, I'll alt-tab back to my work. Thanks for the clarification, mate =)

  • I played this in high school... I played Tuba. One of my favorite songs I ever played.

  • @MBA51290 I am a Tuba player in the West Virginia Youth Symphony Orchestra. The Wind Ensemble branch of the Youth Symphony program will be doing Holst's Second Suite in F. I believe I like his second better - more exciting tuba parts, haha.

  • @MBA51290 I play tuba now in high school and we are playing this....I LOVE IT!!!

  • I played this my first year of high school band(which we played excellently). Hated it then, but I LOVE it now.

  • Still great composition from Mr. Holst. Respectly, and a perfectly recording, every instruments are clear to hear. Real class

  • Still great composition from Mr. Holst. Respectly,

  • 8:16 = GO WOODWINDS

  • My band finally played this again. It made me so happy because I play the euphonium and this song is king for the euph

  • @Rockgod7321 and saxes

  • I AM THE BRINGER OF JOLLITY

  • I remember playing this piece in high school. I must say it was a bitch. It was a concert, hot ass day. 4 groups played. Our Jazz band, 2 community bands, and then the HS band. I was in jazz, one community and the concert band. This was the very last piece. And I played 1st cornet/trumpet for everything. Playing this on 1st cornet after everything was a pain in my ass man. Especially when my band director wanted stuff up an octave. GAH! But fun piece I loved it!

  • Just listened to this and cried.... I really miss the 27th Lancers.

  • Played this song freshman year. Such a great piece!

  • my band took this to contest and played this for our contest we sounded awesome not to blow our oun horns ok... well yes to blow our horns cuz we waz amazing!!!

  • We played this in 7th grade band, and we can all still play this from memory, good times. . .

  • Playing this iin Band Right now, our Tuba section is half good, the other half SUCKS

  • i love this entire suite. i remember when we played it in honor band me n my friend were really impressed with the trumpets in the march. they were so good it was orgasmic lol

  • @koreyknockout Interesting way to describe it. My friend learned how to double tongue while playing this song. We only practiced it though, but it was alongside the Wellington Winds who performed it 2 weeks later.

  • Just so everyone knows, the third movement in just the second movement in reverse

  • We are playing this(freshman in high school on 1st cornet) ... so much fun

  • the seven people/ now 8 must be army lol

  • this piece is timeless, perfectly, and a good test for the diffirent instruments, great composed, and full of sound, but sowhere diffirent instruments. Great!

  • By the way, I am a major Trombone buff, and loved playing this my freshman year of high school. Actually switched to clarinet for the intermezzo movement, going to euphonium halfway through it. What can I say other than we were woefully understaffed back then.

  • The eight people who dislike this piece obviously have never taken a good music class.

  • Eight people were raised on Jonas Brothers, Justin Bieber, and Miley Cyrus.

  • completely agree. Very nice insult. LOL

  • @ninjafighter94 What about Lindsay Lohan? She sings just as badly.

  • @EliteHunter02 Wait, Lindsay Lohan SINGS? What has the world come to?

  • @TheZipding Think, almost every person who was in disney is a singer

  • @ninjafighter94

Come now, I am sure at least one of them was raised on P. Diddy or Vanilla Ice.

  • @ninjafighter94 I'm sorry to inform you,

but the death toll, is much higher.

  • @ninjafighter94 *nine people haha

  • HOLY SHIT BIN LADEN IS DEAD FUCK YEAH

  • @CrypticWatcher While I am just as happy as the next person, if you really want to spam this comment in the appropriate context, use the video of Obama's announcement speech in my favorites tab.
