It's not plagiarism to use common themes prevalent in fiction writing. In a book called How To Read Literature Like a Professor, it said that all stories are just a continuation of another, interrelated, because the all draw on common themes and common backgrounds such as medieval texts and fairytales.
@SamuraiNinjaKoriin Exactly. One claim they are suing Rowling for is that both works have protagonist gets help from teamwork and friendship. It is like hello, that is one of the most common uses in fiction writing by far. I seen it happen in Lord of the Rings, X-Men, the Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Power Ranger, the Three Musketeers and many more examples. I cannot believe Allen's 'experts' missed that. I would use this information in the lawsuit and see how the opposing lawyers make of it.
Stephenie Meyer got her panties in a bunch and got butthurt; she's secretly the one making the lawsuit to bring Rowling down to try and snipe out the competition.
I hope a train hits and kill Paul Allen and the suers of JK Rowling. Allen and the Jacobs family are not failure, they are stupid. At least being a failure you can at least make up for your faults but in stupidity you repeat and make more faults while you are lousy.
GO ROWLING, knock out Paul Allen and the suers into a coma until they die so the whole world can be happy and relieved of their high stupidity.
The Estate of Jacobs are the idiots of the year. Rowling never plagiarism on anything but her own ideas. Now Jacobs are trying to prevent the Goblet of Fire from selling ever again? What makes them think they are going to gain any fans from that? It is like they are scaring away fans and potential readers or not having a common sense to know how gain any fans, let alone readers.
No wonder that Willy the Wizard was a huge failure.
...almost all stories have been told, and most people do not have a unique imagination, so the stories in these writer's heads could be identical without them knowing each other. People need to realize that almost all stories have a similar counterpart somewhere in the world. These plagerizing claims are ridiculous. I really hate the current court system where idiots are suing left and right.
if u want jk rowling plagerism just type in harry potter vs the worst witch which was written in the 70s. i did an essay on it for english and my teacher said i could have a very good point! x
It is actually possible. Willy the wizard was written before harry potter. willy the wizard includes the year of wizards contest ( Goblet of fire ). It also includes wizard trains( Hogwarts Express ), wizard chess, a wizard prison( Askaban ), and a wizards hospital ( St. Mungos. )
@jbooth300 Have you bothered to read Willy the wizard? It's a 38-page book, the excerpts are on the web - illiterate crap. Read it. Also - the contest there is different, the train is different - Rowling train is actually more similar to some boarding school books than this one; chess are just regular chess played by wizards, not moving figures like in Rawling book. As to hospital - Rowling wizard world parallels real world, so it has all the institutions of real world.
@jbooth300 i doubt she did, i mean honestly, she was sued for the GOF, why not sue her for the other ones then?? if anything she expanded on really really really really small parts of that book and made them better. those things are also so minor to the actual books. but she has no need to plagerize.
BULLSHIT! The woman was IN NO WAY! plagiarizing those people! They are just trying to BLAME her for their own loss. They have NOTHING better to do than to make up lies and attack someone successful because they want something from her that they took NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR! This woman inspired me to be a writer! I PRAY to GOD those who were suing her LOST the case! To those who were doing it, GET YOUR OWN ACT TOGETHER AND LEAVE j.K. ROWLING ALONE! STOP IT NOW! JUST KNOCK IT OFF! I am livid at them
The suers of JK Rowling are complete idiots. Is she suppose to read EVERY published book on the planet. I come pair a few books having the same small plots from other books, or TV shows and movies. The Jacobs are are just jealous losers.
I look the book up on amazon The Adventures of Willy the Wizard is only 36 pages long they have to be joking only similaties I saw was that their both wizards
She is an amazing and successful writer, the one who came up with the idea of sueing is a jelous bam who has to be mad and looking for trouble. Plagerism is copying WORD-FOR-WORD, not taking an idea and slightly changing it.
millions of fans will protest and J.K doesnt have 560 million, she said that on the dvd for harry potter 6.

And besides, I read that this lawsuit was thrown out of court because the only similarites between the too books were that the main characters were wizards and were taking a bath. Good Lord.
@owanapotter4567: LOL! That's ridiculous and I'm glad you said this already because I would have said it, too. You can copyright ideas so she plagiarized nothing. If you could, then no one could even write fantasy in the first place because tolkein invented the idea of fantasy novels and therefore anyone who writes fantasy of any kind is just building off of that, but it's not plagiarism. They were just desperate for money.
@theenchantedtiara: EXACTLY! And even Tolkien was inspired by old folktales and stuff. Fantasy has been around for thousands of years and it's clsoe not, if not, completely impossible to come up with a COMPLETELY original idea. Everything's been done already.
The bit with Stephen King is stock footage from some media event. You'll notice she's wearing a different outfit there than she is when she's on her way to court.
I've seen excerpts from the book she was accused of plagiarizing. Apart from being nearly unintelligible, it bears very little resemblance to HP, other than the main character taking a bath. Ludicrous lawsuit, especially when you consider that the book in question didn't even get proper distribution.
the mere fact that they're trying to sue for 500 million just shows that they're greedy money grubbers who are just trying to take advantage of another person's success
What makes me laugh is that this guys 'estate say that J K 's FOURTH book ripped off his book (never published) about a boy who discovered magic.
So, apparently, JK spent 17 years writing and planning all her story and characters and nicked a section of someone else's that "magically" slotted in neatly with all her planning! (Hmmmmh, I think I smell Bullsh*t!)
The idea of a boy who discovers magic is not copyrighted anyway!
You are correct. Even if I did not know of JK 's writng this would be a hard sell. You cannot sue for common knowledge concepts. They have very limited amount to sue for. They have to take this one to the mat, settling would set a bad precedent.
this is a load of shit. j.k.rowling is a great writer + woman. ive been in to and updated wid all and anything 2 do with harry potter sinse it became a huge fanominm and ive nevr found anything acusing her of being a fraud or a plageriser. so this obviously went unproved cuz we nevr hurd anything more about it! and the huge sum of money those guys were demanding was just proof the acusation was false + they just saw her riches, talent and fame + thought "yeah, i want sum of tht" x h.p fan 4 life
'Talented'... good one, it is Plagiarism, just one look at harry potter and I can list a few books it's ripped off of. (not to mention rowling isn't that talented at writing, she's a clever business woman not a clever writer.
It never ceases to amaze how ppl want a piece of you when you're rich, tyler perry is being sued also. There has been countless accusation directed towards wealthy ppl, ironically the ones who are truly worthy of accusations almost never see a day of court. Money brings out the worst in ppl
