Well that's the problem. When I try to downgrade the IOS when BBC tells me to, it says "says net_init failed: -116".Can you tell me what that means. Is it my connection or my Wii or what?

It means that it will make an IOS that is able to read burned game's and disc's. Your system menu stays the same and i have confirmed this working on 4.2e and 4.2u

ive reformatted my wii 2 times doing the same thing first doing bbc's tutorial then using yours it just gives me the error and the game never loads up i left it for 10mins. i am using memorex dvd-rw they run at 4x i burn my games at 3x. is there anything else i could try? please help me i really dont want to buy a chip or pay 60$ to get my wii hardmodded.

Hey, just some question before I try any of this. How does updating work once the Wii has been modded? Also, will I be able to burn gamecube games onto regular sized DVD's and play them? ok when you install BBC's Tut you can install vc games the same way just boot it up from boot2.dol and yes gamecube games wrok on reg dvdr's you can update it will ask you if you want to get rid of your homebrew and click no then updates will install soon as they are done unplug ur wii and you will be fine but dont update untill its a good idea like if they have sumthing good on the new update understand now if you need more info pm me
