I have 3 GB ram on my imac.... I recently installed windows 7 on parallels and want to know what the best memory amount i should choose for windows so that both my windows and mac could run fast enough instead of them BOTH freezing at the same time... please help...
hi there, i just got my macbook, it rocks but, still have to use some windows programs, what should i chose? parallels or boot camp? i need to use "Compiler Dev C++", "Cool Edit Pro 2.0" and that's it haha, probably msn and microsoft office (it's cheaper) it's just for school and studio, otherwise Logic Pro forever! any help could be great, cheers
yup. although i would recommend boot camp since you probably have a music library. vmware/parallels should be kept light. if you need a lot of disk space, boot camp is more beneficial.
you should, its free, myabe the tools are more difficult to install, but have better 3D performance.
well , you can set your partition small as you want, mine is 5gb for example, also is dynamic, it doesnt allocate all space at begin, not all if you install vmwaretools you can drag n drop files from win to mac without shared folder.
and you dont need to restart your mac just to get into windows. i dont play much pc games, so i dont need native speed.
I'm getting ready to install parallels 4.0 on my imac 10.5.5. I would like to use it only for programs like Adobe Photoshop elements 7 and others. I'm not planning to use the internet much. I was thinking of downloading the free Avast! anti virus protection. Do you think that is a good idea? Do you think it is even necessary for me to install Parallels or should I use Bootcamp instead? I haven't opened my Paralles yet! Thanks!
Thanks! I hope I may ask one last question...... I have xp with sp1. Will Paralles 4.0 allow me to download this older version, and then update my Service Pack?
yup. the beauty of Parallels/Fusion is that you can install virtually any version of windows. Boot Camp limits you to XP SP2 and above. If you haven't purchased Parallels yet, I suggest you to look at VMware Fusion. I've used both, and Fusion is more stable and robust than Parallels.
actually, the best solution is Boot Camp + XP/Vista and then install your games. But the easy solution is what you said, buy mac versions of games. Normally, it's the same price.
im new on a mac and im kinda figuring things out, i like it, the dock is sweet and quick but im having a hard time organizing things. How did you space your icons out on your dock
windows isnt being emulated its being virtualized. two completely different things. and paralles 4.0 supports using directx 9.0c with 256mb of vram so your game should run decently as long as your mac has a good video card a processor. my imac with 4gb of ram and a 8800GS plays games fairly well
I actually used both. I recommend Fusion because VMware has much more experience with virtualizing. Parallels has a better UI, but Fusion is better in performance.
Personally I wouldn't since I don't use it much... but that answer is debatable... there is no straight forward answer. I would recommend not having an anti virus program unless you use it very frequently.
nah, just using the server wallpaper (blue version of 'aurora'). server is the same thing as the normal version, except you get more server capabilities and apps that monitor/manage networks of computers (iCal server, Server Preferences, etc).
thanks! I will be doing an overview of Vmware Fusion as well; that will come in the next few days. Merry Christmas (or whichever holiday you celebrate)!!
i am assuming you need a genuine copy of windows to use parallels dont you? or does it come with windows when you download it, (stupid question i know) >_>
how much space does the windows side have?

you can compile c++ on a mac. i suggest parallels because your uses aren't gpu or cpu intensive, otherwise i'd suggest boot camp.
SnowLeopard2008 2 years ago
Do you think I could run my Zune on parallels? (Yes, I know its crazy and stupid to have a mac with a zune). I just converted to mac recently.
Tajikistan404 2 years ago
yup. although i would recommend boot camp since you probably have a music library. vmware/parallels should be kept light. if you need a lot of disk space, boot camp is more beneficial.
SnowLeopard2008 2 years ago
I'm running the new Snow Leopard OS and got the latest Parallels from their site. Will these S/Ns work with the upgrade?
pmassey451 2 years ago
parallels will work with Snow Leopard, but don't try to do that in 64-bit kernel mode.
SnowLeopard2008 2 years ago
i have 4gb of ram, so i can give 1gb for virtual machine, and the performance are very good, i really dont need bootcamp
DarkS3phiroth17 2 years ago
yea, hopefully vmware and parallels improve their 3D performance. that;s really the only lacking thing in VMs,.
SnowLeopard2008 2 years ago
you have a menu for application on fusion also, when you enter on unity mode, is on the top, i prefer the menu n that way..but parallels is nice too
DarkS3phiroth17 2 years ago
ive used both and felt boot camp just gave me a better experience. :D
SnowLeopard2008 2 years ago
whatever..was just to correct you about windows menu on fusion...you dont need to exit unity to open it.
both are good, about bootcamp..well is better in term of perfomance, but you need to restart...have you tried virtualbox?
DarkS3phiroth17 2 years ago
VirtualBox, no I havent tried it. I mean, Fusion by default makes a virtual 40GB HD, why not just do a boot camp partition.
SnowLeopard2008 2 years ago
you should, its free, myabe the tools are more difficult to install, but have better 3D performance.
well , you can set your partition small as you want, mine is 5gb for example, also is dynamic, it doesnt allocate all space at begin, not all if you install vmwaretools you can drag n drop files from win to mac without shared folder.

DarkS3phiroth17 2 years ago
nah, I don't want to keep messing around with VMs. but 3D performance is really a factor in VM software. Most suck in that area.

I have a few programs installed in Windows on my Mac and just got Parallels installed. How do I find this program?? Help ?

wait. windows on your mac via boot camp?

where did you get your dock separators from?

youtube won't let me paste links, so google "dock spacers" and it should be the first entry, from the digitalmdeiaminute site.

Hey... Can I install WoW on parallels???
StopMotionnoobz 2 years ago
yea, but it probably won't be as good relatively speaking compared to Boot Camp or something.
SnowLeopard2008 2 years ago
Dude theres a version of WoW for Mac.
SnipersStealth 2 years ago
doesn't cost extra if you have the PC version and you want the Mac version? Iono... I don't play WoW.
SnowLeopard2008 2 years ago
Well.. You can't use the WoW model viewer on mac, can you? Oh yea. That's right.
StopMotionnoobz 2 years ago
whats better for really good graphic games vmware or parallels dont say bootcamp lol because i want software that will run side by side
paedar12 2 years ago
both of them are pretty close, it would really depend on the game.
SnowLeopard2008 2 years ago
hi can i just use the XP oem version of windows? thanks a lot.
edamps2002 2 years ago
yea. make sure that this is the only machine running that copy of XP.
SnowLeopard2008 2 years ago
All I have is a Windows xp ugrade disk. Will that work?
elainecha 2 years ago
no it won't you need a complete xp disc.

elainecha 2 years ago
I think Photoshop Elements is fine to use with Parallels. Just remember, no heavy/intense graphics. And since Avast is free, why not?
SnowLeopard2008 2 years ago
When you say heavy/intense graphics, do you mean really high mega pixels ( like 16 mp) or animation type stuff? Thanks!
elainecha 2 years ago
like photoshop cs2 and above, 1080p movies, animation software, etc. stuff that normally requires a decent graphics card.
SnowLeopard2008 2 years ago

wats the application key??
bandyuon 2 years ago
that's piracy. And I don't have one because I did not buy this, but used the trial version.
SnowLeopard2008 2 years ago
if I don't get parallels is fusion better than parallels???like for playing games on windows xp???
jasasturm100 2 years ago
none of them are good for gaming. just restore to mac os and use boot camp.
SnowLeopard2008 2 years ago
true. but then i don't have the Macintosh options anymore i have a normal xp system on the i mac. so it makes the computer kind of stupid.
jasasturm100 2 years ago
you can always use the grey restore disks that come with any mac. they let you reinstall Mac OS.
SnowLeopard2008 2 years ago
so call of duty will not work as good as on windows computer.
so if i get an imac i have to buy the game call of duty 5 for Macintosh.
jasasturm100 2 years ago
If you get an iMac, you can always use Boot Camp which allows you to boot Windows (XP/Vista) and install/play anything including games.
SnowLeopard2008 2 years ago
can you play call of duty 5/world at war on imac with the parallel windows XP normally like on a windows computer or even better????
jasasturm100 2 years ago
no games. i was playing a really old GTA and it ran like mud...
SnowLeopard2008 2 years ago
hey jack...
im new on a mac and im kinda figuring things out, i like it, the dock is sweet and quick but im having a hard time organizing things. How did you space your icons out on your dock
XxandrewjvxX 3 years ago
open terminal (in the utilities folder in applications folder) and type the following:
defaults write com.apple.dock persistent-apps -array-add '{"tile-type"="spacer-tile";}'
and then type "Killall Dock" without quotes. Drag the space as if it were an icon.
SnowLeopard2008 3 years ago
can you play windows games on parallels?
like the lord of the ring BFM2???
Chilakil009 3 years ago
it's possible but will be very laggy, due to windows being emulated.
SnowLeopard2008 3 years ago
windows isnt being emulated its being virtualized. two completely different things. and paralles 4.0 supports using directx 9.0c with 256mb of vram so your game should run decently as long as your mac has a good video card a processor. my imac with 4gb of ram and a 8800GS plays games fairly well

Hello Jack,
I think that parallels is better than Vmware Fusion what do you think?.
Of course I'm talking about the latest version of the both.
khaledacmilan 3 years ago
I actually used both. I recommend Fusion because VMware has much more experience with virtualizing. Parallels has a better UI, but Fusion is better in performance.
SnowLeopard2008 3 years ago

Personally I wouldn't since I don't use it much... but that answer is debatable... there is no straight forward answer. I would recommend not having an anti virus program unless you use it very frequently.

DillonCampbellVideos 3 years ago
yup.
SnowLeopard2008 3 years ago

DillonCampbellVideos 3 years ago
Leopard Server is the same thing as regular Leopard. It just has more server related utilities.
SnowLeopard2008 3 years ago
Do you have to buy windows xp or vista?
DeMichaelSuperFan 3 years ago
unfortunately, yes you do. but Parallels can also run many Linux distros.
