@charlie28 think you may be right i was only 14 or 15 but Isaw Blind Faith at the mid west rock fest in West-Allis wis might have been 69 or was it 68.But I do remember The Blues Breakers and Buffy Saint Marie Cream was no more.,but I did to see Eric Claptin. Also saw the greatest rock drummer.
I don`t mean to be a stickler, but -, I keep seeing mention of "1969" in the comments. You mean 19 SIXTY-EIGHT. Cream disbanded in Nov. of `68, with their "goodbye" concert in the Royal Albert Hall in London. Clapton did that Rolling Stones "Rock and Roll Circus" (unaired) TV special in Dec. of `68, and Cream was already over. In 1969 he and Ginger Baker were in Blind Faith for most of that year. I hope that I don`t seem like a smart-ass; I just wanted to set the record straight.
@turenne11 bearded can also mean sharp edged when speaking of wooden material :) There's explanation how this song got the idea..please search for making of SWLABR..if my memory serves me, there's sort of neener neener behind this with drawing moustaches on a poster :)
Been listening to this song for 45 years and I know what the song is about. Its about a guy who is deeply in love with a long term ex girl friend. She left him for another guy who abuses her and she comes back to the old boyfriend saying she made a mistake leaving him.He is so in love with her that he consuls her and they make love all day and then she breaks up with him and goes back to the abusive boyfriend. This happens over and over again. The term beard and mustache means a fake / phony
@shadowtom14 Yes,she is absolutely irresistible in his eyes,a beauty an Angel from heaven,he would do anything to have her back. She is masking herself always using him as an alternative crush.Poor guy you gotta feel for him. One sided love sucks!!!
@hugatag yeah... you're right! Woman always say that men don't love, just want sex. but is the woman that don't feel love. and they don't want sex. they want money, cars, shoes and be "better than other women". i think be a woman means compete with the other women and fool the men.
@PowerfulNoise Well I have been married for 23 years and after the honeymoon she demanded I put her as co signer on my bank account. I knew I had made a terrible mistake. If she needed or wanted money I would just give it to her.I have been separated from her going on 9 years, The one and only greatest thing about the marriage was we made 3 absolutely beautiful children and I am sure that's why God put us together and my hope is that my children will help make this world a better place.
@PowerfulNoise One more thing. I relate to Swlabr from my younger years and always said this song was about me. Why do so many women enjoy being abused by their men. I work in PR and I speak to people from all walks of life many of which are women. They vent to me how their husbands abuse them both physically and mentally. They tell me they want to be loved and cared for however most do nothing about picking up and leaving them. This has been a fact since biblical days!
@estyle40 Since we at least agree the "S" stands for "She", how about She Wears Leis And Bearded Rainbows? She Wears Lipstick And Beaded Rainbows? She Walked Lightly And Brought Rainbows? Hmm, maybe it's really She Walks Like A Beaded Rainbow. Makes a bit more sense than Bearded. Then again that might be why it's Bearded. LOL, now my head hurts.
years back my aunt gave me this album. I didnt end up listening to it until years later, but the day i dusted off my record player and set this up, my mind was opened to this kind of music.
@beantownbig3 Almost positive (don't feel like checking mine) it didn't list the song with capital letters originally. If I'm wrong someone please be kind enough to correct me.
i saw Cream at the Whiskey in LA. i walked-up that night , got in for 3 bucks. stood 10 feet away from them in the middle. they came out we all just stood there in AWE. they did the whole first album for us. it was like a dream was happening. i wish they didnt get famous, so i could of gone back every time they put another great album, and i could go back...to the whiskey and see them again. the thing that blew our minds, wasnt just the guitar, drums, etc,,,but the harmonies. that was key.
in a completely positive way, I truly hate you. My dad used to make me listen to the harmonies in the Mamas and Papas and Cream etc. and now that I am older I really can appreciate why he did that. So I am insanely jealous that your experience with it was live. good for you.
@janicewatersteen... thanks for hating me. yes, i was so close to them, my head was practically stuck in ginger bakers bass drum,( the right one). your dad was very estute having you listen 2 harmony. when we played the first song on Cream the day iit came-out,,,,i feel free....and we heard those incredible harmonies,, then the blasting of claptons guitar...,,we all looked at each other with our mouths open.. like....OMG,,this is soooo fuxing great. and thus..Cream was born.
@CHUCKLOVES1969 You are really lucky to have seen Cream at the Whiskey. I love small venues too. I personally do not enjoy going to huge packed shows either. If you want to see a big band at a smaller venue you should go to the house of blues. It only holds a few thousand. I always got great seats to almost any show because my uncle is Eric Clapton but when I saw some newer bands I was among the rest and sitting way far away watching a band doesnt give you the desired impact of the show.
@markenhagen .dont know how old u r...but i was 16? we had already been blown-away by the album, and to be able to just walk up that night, and get tickets for $3, and walk right in,,just proves how ahead of the curve we were back then. the night is burned into my DNA...standing right in front of them as they did their thing. if eric really is your cousin,,,tell him/or i should say ask him, right at that time, there was rumor...he was tone-deaf. does he remember that? take care.
1969 was a great year! Born in NY.... The Jets+Mets won titles plus all of the great music/Plus the young girls(I was still in H.S.) still playing sports-w/o a care!
@soxwina ..that's just ONE of the reasons i love 1969 so much...gogle what happened that year,,and i swear to god..more historical things happened that year,,,than any other year..has/or will ever do. i was 18...on jan 10th..1969...what was to become of that whole year..after 1964-1968....it was an explosion of revolution, in art, music, space, politics, clothes...and drugs. and yes,,the jets AND the mets winning,,,,it all...just proves my theory..1969..is and was the greatest yr. EVER.
@ledzeppelin174 ...i was lucky as hell to have been in 1969,,and also living in LA. which of course couldnt have been any better place to have bands doing shows,,cept for san fran or new york. those days are 4ever etched into my DNA,,,,but u have youtube to see and feel the revolutionary times we were part of. check out the vids that zep,or hendrix, or the who.. did in london in 69 with a small studio crowds. that's how it was ,,,it was' pure gold..100% real,,,, unreal.
@CHUCKLOVES1969 Totally. The sheer brilliance of Cream will never be matched. Clapton solo... yuck. tired Cream reunions with the guys sitting around on stools... fail.
@pdog283 SORRY..any reunion with wouldn't be worth going to see?. listen good.... i was channel surfing about 5 months ago...and was completely blown-away when i came upon Cream,,doing a show in london a few years ago. they were not sitting on stools, and they were playing like it was.........last year..1969 i wish to fuxin H...i had been there. the only bummer was you had to sit in seats, and not able to stand right in front of them...an smoke a J as they blasted away. i feel freeeeeeeeee.
@BobReidy how LOUD???..my ears are still ringing, after what 44 years?..man...it seems like about 10 years ago. standing right at their feet was truly a life time event. it wasn't any louder some shows i saw. the whiskey is a very small club..they probably had only about 5 or eight amps,,IF THAT many,,and Gingers drums were about 8 feet from me. they were Cream for godsake. it was like we went, we walked-in about 8 pm...cant remember who played b4,,,they came on about 11.it was heaven time time.
I was hoping I would hear that.I asked because I was not there.I wish I was but I was born 20 years after it occured and am quite jelous. It is so awesome you were that close to them.
@BobReidy club had tables for about 60 people.. an upstairs where you could sit and look down,,held 100 people. in front of the stage was a dance floor 12 x 15 feet. the stage was up to your belly button. we all stood on the dance floor, facing Cream,,and i was right up against the stage in the middle,,Gingers drums, i could touch them if i bent over to touch them, thats how close i was. and trust me,we knew we were seeing history.,,that Cream was a SUPER group. thats why we went! it was unreal.
@BobReidy that's nice of you,,,,i will leave on my channel for u to read ,,all the bands i actually did see back then. but let me tell you,,you are lucky as hell to have youtube to find all these great shows and bands from back then to relive what i went through,,,,,trust me,,,youre lucky too. peace-out......chuckloves1969..cause i was 18 on january 10th 1969..the best year EVER.
@SeattleLA yes..i saw the Doors..i was sitting on the floor, NOT in a seat,,,i never went to see bands where u had to sit in a certian seat,,i was right in front of them at a show they did in venice...where they use to hang-out. go read it on my profile. i was i think 16,,in 1967...they played that afternoon at a place called the Cheetah...google it. to me...i was a little dissapionted at their live show,,,they werent as good as the recordings..but shit,,,it was..The Doors.
@CHUCKLOVES1969 That is very nice. I grew up in LA also, but I was just 6 when they first played at the Whiskey. Eventually, I met people who saw them, including one taxi driver two years ago, who claimed that the Whiskey would not let him in, being underage. Then, he felt a hand on his shoulder, and it was..Jim, who got him in, and for free. I saw various bands at the Forum, but when I go back soon, I want to see Ray and Robbie, who play there once in a while. What an era, Beach Boys too.
@SeattleLA i remember,,the whiskeys policy was you had to be at least 16,,and they would stamp your left hand if under 21,,so they knew you couldnt order booze. and thats a cool story about jim geting the kid in.
i was the perfect age in the sixties to just get in,,,so i was 16 in 1967. and when u mention the Beach Boys. there is no other group that america had to compare to the Beatles,,,cept,,the Beach Boys. the wealth of their long career is huge...brian wilson is our own true,,j. lennon.

@CHUCKLOVES1969 Cool. When I finally drove by the Whiskey about ten years ago, I was surprised that it seemed small, at least from the outside. Besides London, we were known for having the best bands in the whole world. My aunt used to regularly babysit the Beach Boys, in Hawthorne, early 1950s. Brian is exactly what you said. Power to him, for having the mental problems, yet still composing & performing. He lives in Beverly H.. I wrote him a letter 3 years ago, probably his staff got it, though
You're coming to me with that soulful look,on your face!, your comin' lookin' like you never, ever, done one wrong thing............(and we know thats bs,...hehe).peace Littlequeen ; )
In all honesty, I don't think the title of this brilliant song is a word. I think it it just a series of random words. The title is just S-W-L-A-B-R. 6 individual letters. Anyway, the pronunciation of SWLABR is irrelevant. It's by Cream. It's truly classic. Just listen to it and enjoy it.
I always heard that the picture has a mustache and the rainbow has a beard because SWLABR...Sex without love always brings regrets...so somethings just not right.
I still have the record after all these years and a musician for 35+ years and it has always been..... She was like a bearded rainbow......... God bless Cream, Dan Lewis
I still have the record after all these years and a musician for 35+ years and it has alwars been..... She was like a bearded rainbow......... God bless Cream, Dan Lewis
Great song..Yer it's about a girl who keeps running back to her man after doing the dirty..& he is annoyed that she thinks he knows nothing..it's about running to & from the cool using acid..Hence Rainbows & Bearded figures i.e Jesus..Manson..Could be wrong but that's what I have heard..Cool Tune all the same...
She Was Like A Bearded Rainbow. SWLABR. It's about a woman who "seems" perfect but is far from perfect .... likely from Pete Brown's personal experience with a girlfriend.
Just found this album sitting with my uncle's collection of several other great records in his room. I'm gonna get to inherit his record player and many of his records and possibly this one. I'm also hoping to inherit some of his WWII German Infantry reenacting gear. Not trying to brag at all, but how lucky am I? Lol
@Transformers2themax haha i know luckier. My buddys dad who seen the cream live and every other band thats worth mentioning owns hundreds of records maybe even thousands.
@Krosstika1 Lol cool. I also have the first Doors and Led Zeppelin albums, Dark Side of the Moon, and The Wall. Although, I wish I had Surrealistic Pillow.
swlabr: Disraeli Gears is the second album by British blues-rock group Cream. It was released in November 1967 and went on to reach #5 on the UK album chart. It was also their American breakthrough, becoming a massive seller there in 1968, reaching #4 on the American charts.

EVER.

@CHUCKLOVES1969 I would give soooo much to be 18 in 1969. Damn, that must have been amazing. I'm 18 in 2011... Not too much to remember sadly...
ledzeppelin174 4 months ago
@ledzeppelin174 ...i was lucky as hell to have been in 1969,,and also living in LA. which of course couldnt have been any better place to have bands doing shows,,cept for san fran or new york. those days are 4ever etched into my DNA,,,,but u have youtube to see and feel the revolutionary times we were part of. check out the vids that zep,or hendrix, or the who.. did in london in 69 with a small studio crowds. that's how it was ,,,it was' pure gold..100% real,,,, unreal.
CHUCKLOVES1969 4 months ago
@CHUCKLOVES1969 Totally. The sheer brilliance of Cream will never be matched. Clapton solo... yuck. tired Cream reunions with the guys sitting around on stools... fail.
pdog283 4 months ago
@pdog283 SORRY..any reunion with wouldn't be worth going to see?. listen good.... i was channel surfing about 5 months ago...and was completely blown-away when i came upon Cream,,doing a show in london a few years ago. they were not sitting on stools, and they were playing like it was.........last year..1969 i wish to fuxin H...i had been there. the only bummer was you had to sit in seats, and not able to stand right in front of them...an smoke a J as they blasted away. i feel freeeeeeeeee.

BobReidy 4 months ago
@BobReidy how LOUD???..my ears are still ringing, after what 44 years?..man...it seems like about 10 years ago. standing right at their feet was truly a life time event. it wasn't any louder some shows i saw. the whiskey is a very small club..they probably had only about 5 or eight amps,,IF THAT many,,and Gingers drums were about 8 feet from me. they were Cream for godsake. it was like we went, we walked-in about 8 pm...cant remember who played b4,,,they came on about 11.it was heaven time time.
CHUCKLOVES1969 4 months ago
I was hoping I would hear that.I asked because I was not there.I wish I was but I was born 20 years after it occured and am quite jelous. It is so awesome you were that close to them.
BobReidy 4 months ago

@CHUCKLOVES1969 That is great. Did you ever see The Doors?
SeattleLA 4 months ago
@SeattleLA yes..i saw the Doors..i was sitting on the floor, NOT in a seat,,,i never went to see bands where u had to sit in a certian seat,,i was right in front of them at a show they did in venice...where they use to hang-out. go read it on my profile. i was i think 16,,in 1967...they played that afternoon at a place called the Cheetah...google it. to me...i was a little dissapionted at their live show,,,they werent as good as the recordings..but shit,,,it was..The Doors.
CHUCKLOVES1969 4 months ago
@CHUCKLOVES1969 That is very nice. I grew up in LA also, but I was just 6 when they first played at the Whiskey. Eventually, I met people who saw them, including one taxi driver two years ago, who claimed that the Whiskey would not let him in, being underage. Then, he felt a hand on his shoulder, and it was..Jim, who got him in, and for free. I saw various bands at the Forum, but when I go back soon, I want to see Ray and Robbie, who play there once in a while. What an era, Beach Boys too.
SeattleLA 4 months ago

Just found this album sitting with my uncle's collection of several other great records in his room. I'm gonna get to inherit his record player and many of his records and possibly this one. I'm also hoping to inherit some of his WWII German Infantry reenacting gear. Not trying to brag at all, but how lucky am I? Lol

swlabr: Disraeli Gears is the second album by British blues-rock group Cream. It was released in November 1967 and went on to reach #5 on the UK album chart. It was also their American breakthrough, becoming a massive seller there in 1968, reaching #4 on the American charts.
