My lolo was one of the FILIPINO soldiers who survived the DEATH MARCH. He volunteered as a cook to escape from Japs tortures. At night when the japs are asleep, he will give food to those who are inside the prison.they would carry their co-soldiers to save them from Jap's deadly bayonetas. These are the untold stories that werent told in the books. My lolo is now 93 years old. His name was placed at Bataan. JUAN L. MONREAL- HERO Death March
Philippines has 2 World Records in WW2 history.. one is Battle Of the Philippine Sea is the Largest Aircraft Carrier Battle in History, and Battle Of Leyte Gulf is the Largest Naval Battle in History. Thats why, When Topics About War, People Remember What Happend In Philippines.. I LOVE MY COUNTRY!
All the comments are correct and Ive been in all three types of combat Ive found with first hand knowledge that War is not the only soluation to political indifference just the last and the inability of the people ,and leadership of falling to reach a hormonous out come, it too dam bad that people let there learders go to such extreme to prove a point. Its time the working class to lead these countrys.
Thanks for adding this great video series. My father, John Gregg was on the USS Bennion DD662 which was in this battle as well as the battle of Surigao Straits. He's 86 now and has alzheimers but still talks of his WWII days.
..My DAd fought in Bataan and then with the resistance..before he died..he finally was granted US citizenship..He always tell us the stories of how relieve they were when the Americans came back..Please say thank you to your Dad..and to all his comrades..that,s coming from a Filipino like me and my late father..
My Dad served in this battle (on shore) where he received an operation in a tent. He died of Parkinson's Disease. Speaking to a doctor ON Leyte I discovered many people there, and those who served in WW2, contract 'dementia' of one type or another. Scientists attributed MY Dad's to high levels of Manganese in the surface water (boiled when used in surgeries - but still holding 'heavy metals').
Did YOUR Dad have surgery there or drink the water?
@gg718707753 Your dad is a living piece of history. The last battle fought between battleships was the Surigao strait. And the destroyers of that task force made a highly effective torpedo run. Of course I'm sure your dad has told you this. Thank him for us.
I believe the announcer refers to this as the greatest navel battle in history? I thought the battle of Jutland in WW1 was considered the biggest. I know that Leyte was the last confrontation of battleships and this is a terrific episode in the Victory at Sea series.
Well, I supposed it's all open to historical interpretation. While I have been in combat situations myself, there's something chilling abought the thought of being at sea and getting attacked by a battleship.
TECH. Absolutely. I think that being attacked at sea is very frightening. If they hit you in the right place, the ship blows up and you are dead for sure. At least in the air, you can jump out of the plane. On land, you can just hide.
I think Jutland is the biggest (and I think only) encounter between two battleship fleets but not quite so significant and technically not all that great since it was also the most indecisive battle of WW1 , I think that may have been a factor in his phrasing :S
Yeah, I think Jutland was pretty much a draw but Germany suffered worse than England. The battle of the Coral sea was another big one, then there are the poundings of the Graf Spee and Bismark.

The first time I knew about the battle, "The largest naval battle in history" was on Battle 360. Thank You Enterprise :-)
Captain Earnest E Evans - NOW THAT'S A HERO and the USS Johnston.
So many things happened and whoever you are, thank your Father John Gregg, he and the rest of our WW2 ancestors are truly "THE GREATEST GENERATION".

@bobbycv64 Yes he is and was awarded the CMH. I did not care for Battle 360.

it depends on the definition used. Jutland, Philippine Sea and Leyte Gulf are all the largest by certain criteria.
markwtr77 3 years ago
I think that Leyte is the greatest sea battle ever. There were a number of phases to the battle.

Wow...what an impressive bunch of Naval history.

hmm looking back at all the "great" battleship battles you have to wonder why everyone stuck with battleships as long as they did :S
