  • Gordon Banks says that every time he watches this he expects the ball to go in the net. I've been watching football for almost 50 years and I've never seen anything that even comes close to this save. What makes it even better is that it was the best cross ever made which led to the greatest header ever made which produced the best save ever made. A once in a lifetime event which I watched on tv as it happened.

  • Great save

  • The best goal he never scored, as Pele once said.

  • At 0:58 his teammate couldnt believe it.

  • Comment removed

  • The best thing about this is how casual he is about it. Oh, Pele's slamming down a perfectly aimed header, is he? Alright, time to leap onto the ground. No worries.

  • Being a goalkeeper back then was horrible

If the ball hit you it hurt!

It was like a medicine ball wrapped in ice

  • CASILLAS WAY MUCH BETTER! ♥♥

  • Comment removed

  • the angle at which it was saved and how he saved it of the line makes it incredible

  • Casillas does good saves but the ball banks was playing with was hard leather they play with softer rubbery one now and thats why he was better

  • lol he made that epic save and all he got was a pat on the head

  • @joacopela95 and a slap on the arse

  • Casillas save vs sevilla is 10 times better

  • @mckyle9 Remember this was 1970, at at the time this was the greatest save in the world by far, but of course goalkeeping has improved since then.

  • @MJAS93 never thought of it like that, your probably right enough.

  • Comment removed

  • quality save. not the best of all time though.

  • @mckyle9 Please, no comments relating to racial backgrounds

  • About this, Pele said "I scored a goal...but Gordon Banks saved it".

  • Pelé, who had arrived at speed and with perfect timing. thundered a downward header towards Banks' near post corner.shouted Goal Banks was still making his way across the line from Jairzinho's cross and in the split-second of assessment the incident allowed, it was impossible for him to get to the ball. He also had to dive slightly backwards and down at the same time which is almost physically impossible. Yet he hurled himself downwards and backwards and got the base of his thumb to the ball

  • Banks is a lot better than casillas

  • @smurphymanbob2502 no he isn't

  • I am a great fan of Banks but I still don't get it.....

  • that save was nothing Casillas makes that look like a sunday league save

  • Gordon Banks makes Iker Casillas look like robert green

  • @elijahhandley no he doesn't

  • There's only one Gordon Banks, one Gordon banks, one Gordon banks!

  • Incredible !

  • Greatest Ever

  • Allan mcgregors save for rangers against werder bremen was better! It got save of the season in all competitions that year!

  • i saw so many vids about this that were recorded with a rock, we're lucky this one was recorded with a brick -,-

  • definitely not the best save

  • I think Dudek's save against Shevchenko was better. A double save from closer range.

  • they all look like they're wearing boxers....

  • still like david seamans save, because It's just crazy lol

  • History's most overrated save. Banks comes from his left post and can continue his run against his right. The header isn't very hard, and it comes from some distance. Sorry, but if it hadn't been a header from Pele, it would never have ben considered "the greatest save ever". It's good, but the greatest ever? Come on, it's far from ...

  • pele dislikes this video

  • Save of the century.

  • what a save

  • Brazil fans: yes Yes YES YES no (?!?)

  • There was this other clown... Jorge Campos from Mexico... actually believed he was a goalkeeper.. too funny...5th division, bench....

  • Higuita was clown whereas Banks was a GOALKEEPER.

  • What a save ... Gordon Banks! Should get him FA Cup final tickets for life!

  • eu comprei esse cara na master liga do pes2010 e ele sempre fexou meu gol.. e nao sabia q era tao idolatrado assim auhahua

  • @MrMachoman47 Just click view all comments then use Ctr F :D

  • Nice shorts

  • we will never get it from a better angle :/

  • damn now i have to look for liverpoolcomps comment

  • baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaanks vs

    tiaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

  • @ariba1888 dont we all?

  • @Jswan500 Why yes we do

  • Pele must be thinking to this day, "Why Gordon, WHY?!"

  • i like gordon banks goalkeeping outfit, with the rolled up sleeves.. awesome

  • gordon banks: best keeper of the 20th century

  • @itchygonads - Yeah and what are you Scottish probably. They can't even qualify for anything. When was the last time they even competed in the finals of a competion, 1996?! (And Wales are even shitter).

  • @maidenslayer I am scottish, and yes we are fucking awful at football, but atleast we admit it, your scumbag fans cum over their shit football team then cry like little pussies when they lose. You won the world cup once and cheated. Congradulations.

  • I don't understand why everybody love to flame this video so much.... It is an exceptional save, certainly not an average one, and it was done in World Cup against Pele. So... it's a pretty good claim for one of the best save ever...

Btw, I'm not English, and I don't even support their national team.. so don't bother flaming England as a riposte.

  • Comment removed

  • I don't get it either. It's a good save, obviously, but why all the commotion?

  • Can someone please explain how this is a good save? Like honestly, I don't know why this save is considered the best of all time, I'm not trying to hate or anything at all, I just wanna what's so spectacular about a save like this.

  • @chamakh2917 Because A: Its a header they're so unpredictable. B: Its a downward header so he'd have to guess which was its going to bounce, which is alot harder than it looks. C: His reaction time, going from one side of the goals to the other in about a second much the same as Iker Casillas save vs Sevilla.

  • Sorry but David Seaman's save was better and that's the truth. You can say what you want but it honestly doesn't matter.

  • @xTyrRanT Sorry but Gregory Coupets save outranks Seaman by a long way.

  • @Valeman31 If your talking about the one were he headed it, that was a good save but he knew it was coming and easily could have used his hand. The David Seaman save was pure reaction, 99.99% of keepers would have let that go in because it was almost unreachable. In my personal opinion it was #1. If you want to see the best diving keeper that I have ever seen you should look up Guillermo Ochoa.

  • @xTyrRanT Not to seem mean but you don;t know the rules. The kick in Coupets save came off his own players foot which means he can not touch it with his hands, hence the diving backwards header then a world class save which was a downward header by at that time one of the best strikers in the world - Rivaldo. David Seamans save wouldnt have happened if that last striker hadnt have tryed to head it in, if he had have left it it would have gone in.

  • @Valeman31 No I understand the rules but I didn't notice that it came off his own players foot. Nevertheless both saves were good I just prefer the Seaman save. Maybe im a little biased towards him because im an Arsenal fan.

  • I don't give a fuck about the hater comments...You can tell the quality of the save by the peoples reactions. I love it when a defender holds their heads like "daaamn!!!" and then they're like "What it's not a goal WTF??" also when a striker celebrates thinking it's a goal and then like "How the fuck is that not a goal???"

Next time you watch a best save compilation look for these reactions.

  • this save is shit, typical english scum overrating their own footballing ability

  • this shit looked like it was in

  • look for Seaman vs sheffiled unt

  • @psychomata higuitas save was a embarassment to goalkeeping, goalkeeping is about positioning and reflexs, not about getting lucky.

i bet he did that 1000 times in training before he actually succeeded

  • @Jswan500 That so called "save" was attempted because the player who shot it was in an offside position..

Higuita attempted that pathetic save just for people's amusement..

  • @goddamn4567 I dont call 30 yards out offside

  • @Jswan500 Sorry mistake by me.. i read somewhere that the player who kicked it was offside

it wasnt an offside but still... it was very very shit display of goalkeeping

  • @Jswan500 lmao, if Higuita just stood there he would have caught the ball in the most routine save ever. It was pretty impressive not gonna lie, but there was no need for what so ever.

  • @Jswan500 The whistle had gone anyway so it was just Higuita messing about, still an iconic 'save'

  • @Jswan500 id call it a cross tbh..

  • @Jswan500 it was offside, the player he attempted the cross to was offside, and thats when offside was simply offside. when standing behind the line of defense and the ball is played forward (shot or pass) you are offside. the rule has now changed to interference

    stupid fucks! learn the rules

  • @Jswan500 it wasnt a shot, it was a poor cross from redknapp. whoever it was intended for was offside.

  • @Jswan500 Higuita did the save after the ref had stopped play so, even though it was spectacular, it was just showboating.

  • @goddamn4567 Do you even understand the offside rule? Pathetic..

  • @goddamn4567 Offside? The fuck are you talking about? Jamie Redknapp had 13 people and the referee in front of him. It was a friendly against England, that's why he did it - doubt he'd risk it in the semi-final of a World Cup.

  • @Jswan500

maybe an embarassment to goalkeeping, but pretty memorable

  • @psychomata if you watch Higuitas scorpion, the shot was dipping, no power on it all, quick easy to do if you did gymnastics.

  • @psychomata even if it went in it would have been a no goal because the referee had stopped play

  • not even close ._.

  • Should be named "greatest english goalie save ever" :D

For real, the header wasn't that strong, 8 meters out. good save, but not best save

  • Pele.....thats PELE ! Thought he had scored.....and the great man still says this is the best save he has ever witnessed

  • Banks himself in his autobiography says that he doesn't consider that his greatest save. Still amazing.

Also Moore told him he was getting old because he used to catch them

  • For me, the best bit about this sequence was Carlos Alberto's 40 yard inch-perfect swerve pass unleashed with the outside of his foot. Incredible skill.

  • Just incredible. Whoever claims that this save isn't absolutely fantastic has obviously never kicked a ball at any sort of standard in their lives. This is incredible. FACT.

  • To me, the save isnt that impressive. The fact that he prevents a rebound is just surreal. THAT is what makes it the best ever.

  • My Jaw actually dropped.

  • 0:57......whats the hell???

  • Most overrated save of all time.

  • @LiverpoolComps ...worst comment of all time

  • @LiverpoolComps if u are a actuall keeper u would no how hard it is to do that over rated have u seen the scorpion kick thats over rated dick head

  • @LiverpoolComps Why are Liverpool fans so fucking stupid

    Get a life will ya

  • @LiverpoolComps Oh yeah? Name one better.

  • @LiverpoolComps to get an idea, as pele made contact with the ball, he screamed,"GOAL!" gordon dived across the goal and reached behind him to scoop it out. everyone says it was the greatest save ever.

  • @LiverpoolComps Try doing that. Take a video of you doing that. Then you can call it overrated.

  • The best goalkeeper of all times was Lev Yashin, but this may be the greatest save.

  • The great German goalie Bert Trautmann reckons this save is vastly overrated 'cause Banks's positioning for the cross was all wrong.

  • @ohtheidol Banks was at his near post when the cross came over. It was hit to the far post so he had to turn and get there and then had to deal with a fast, bouncing ball. Looks like he did everything right to me.

  • The BEST goalkeeper of all times, thank God I had a chance to watch him playing.

  • mr armando you need to look again my friend ,players get told to head the ball down if they can as its one of the hardest saves to make by a keeper..football is made of opinions and if we all thought the same then it would be a great shame. for me the 1970 brazil team were the best in worl cup history.. this save was great

  • what a boss

  • Omg

  • "pele still thinking until this day why he cant score".......,the reasons...,GORDON BANKS

  • Banks was the only goalkeeper that England had. Because nowadays they don't have a decent goalkeeper... Green? James? hahaha!

  • @sl4ck27 Hart?

  • @dw472009 This is not time for jokes man...

  • Would someone please explain to me why this is the best save ever? Not trying to troll or anything, I know it´s Brasil and I know it´s Pele and I know its a World Cup, but still dont get it. I just think the ball was going directly to him.

  • @MrArmandoOL

I agree I dont get it either

  • "safe as the Banks of England" :)

  • i wonder how he would play as a midfielder or striker

  • lmao at that woman's nose on 1.18

  • fuckin sick guy

  • shame those dirty mexicans gave the man food poisoning meaning he couldn't play in that quarter final

  • Did he hit it with his head or did he save it? :/

  • The reason this save is so incredible is that Banks had to jump not only to the side but backwards which is incredibly challenging. That's not even considering how hard it is to react to a shot like that in the heat of the game. (I know this because I am a goalie myself.)

  • funny all the comments degrading this save and the keeper, there is no player in the premiership that could hold a candle to any player on that pitch, there just a bunch of over paid dancers. amazing save tho

  • @lightningsmurf11 Petr Cech.

  • @NickChim petr Cech WAS gd maybe as good but let a little knock to head has made him a no one

  • @lightningsmurf11 i dont think so. he's still influential and makes absolutely stunning saves. hes just been more cautious since then but i agree he was a better player before the head injury. hes still one of the top 3 in the world though

  • @lightningsmurf11 Just wondering bt did you see Chelsea when they went off form during November-February last season? Cech was easily thier best player, and kept them in many games. Still easily one of the best in the world although I do agree before his injury he was even better

  • @lightningsmurf11 Mate, you made one of the most intelligent comments that I've ever watched on youtube. Modern footballer seems a farce when compared to these 22 gentlemen.

  • Craig Gordon is a legend!

  • Where was the save of the century?

  • What an ugly bunch of mofos

  • Keepers make saves like this every week.

  • it sucks

  • He's such a wet blanket.

    Sorry, It´s a joke...

What a save! Congratulations Mr. Banks!!!

  • I cant see why this is so good :P

  • @agent00liverpool It's because there is no record from another position, such as behind the goal.

  • @LancerEvoIX1 I KNOW AND THATS FUCK*** annoying!!!

  • @agent00liverpool you censored ING instead of FUCK just saying looool

  • @machicniii yes and do you have a problem with the word FUCK because if you have your a monkey dick FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK

  • @agent00liverpool no im just saying whats the point of censoring anything anyway. lmao specially if you're gonna censor the wrong letters calm down -.-

  • @machicniii Your an apple!

  • sends shivers down my spine every time i see that save...

  • Why are England so utterly shit now compared to the world challenging team that we used to be?

  • @spaceman1979 England was never all that good they had money but did not learn that speed alone does not win it, some players have skill like Gaza and Lineker and Keegan yet their system is not one to allow individual skill. Another thing is that they never manage to win the big ones that is why they have never won a European cup or even been in a final and they only have 1 world cup title and a 4th place in the world cup.

  • @spaceman1979 It is the style of football, I believe. Watching the '66 match they played against Argentina there was always a pass available for either wide defender. Moreover I find it difficult to isolate one great player as they were all legends, (Moore, Charlton, Hurst, Peters, Cohen, Greaves, Banks etc) There was always a pass available for the England team as they were such a fabulous unit.

  • “I know I scored that goal – Banks ran away with it!”

  • overrated

  • goalkeeping like a boss.

  • @flamoboy231

banks wasnt goalkeeping like a boss................ he was the master

  • beautiful save it was the best in history but Iker Casillas' save vs sevilla took over now but i will never forget that save from one of the best GK in the history Gordon Banks

  • damn

  • wow, back then the england squad was english!

  • @HRHooChicken What's that supposed to mean?

  • he never was the best, he just was the best england ever had

  • He should have caught it, dribbled down the field & scored lol

  • The Defenders also said OMG

  • this man is soooooo crazy

  • I'm going to go out on a limb here and say it- that isn't the greatest save ever. If any other person headed that ball for any other country it would have been forgotten (Schmeichels replica against Rapid Vienna...). Yes he travelled across goal to save it, but what keeper doesn't follow ball across goal. Banks only dived about a yard to his right. It also bounced at the right height for a save. Come on people!

  • @Wolfhaines thank you for not making me feel alone as your comment makes me see that I am not the only intelligent one here

  • @Wolfhaines if you want to see a great save check out Buffon's save against Zidane's header in the 2006 final or Zoff's against Brazil in the 82 world cup which sent Italy to the semifinal and Brazil out of the world cup

  • @truvianni Sei italiano? Guarda questo- molto meglio delle Banks. Ricrerca: 'David Seaman - The best save in History'

  • @Wolfhaines sono Italo Americano como Al Capone. Seaman era bravo ma in il 2002 a desvagliato contra il Brasile en un giocco importante chiaro che lo conosco lui giocaba en il Arsenal

  • This is really the best save ever

  • This is really the best save EVER

  • wtf 1:16...

  • Heard this was the best save ever. A good save, but im a little bit dissapointed. Maybee it is so famous becouse it wa a important match.

  • @TobiDahl

I'm not going to mouth you off like some would but I disagree with you. It wasn't just a good reaction save,it was the fact that his head crashed solid into the very hard ground and that he could get to the most uncomfortable place for a goalkeeper. But yes, the fact it was the world cup final did make it more famous I suppose. :) .. what a useless and pointless reply I just wrote!. Good day!.

  • @tomodude6542 Ha,ha you may bee right :P And good day to you too

  • @TobiDahl actually it was not an imporant match first round of the world cup and both teams went on to qualify to the next round it is just over exposed and over rated like most things English regarding the game of football however if you want to see a great save check out what Zoff did for Italy against Brazil in 82 when he stopped a great header at the last minute to send Italy in the semifinal and Brazil out of the world cup

  • i never get tiredof this video

  • @kissos94 nah, short shorts were worn back in those days, dunno why though...

  • If you think this is the best save of history, you never saw Peter Schmeichel. He was like a freak ninja cat.

  • @FabianLHP but not against PELE

  • brasil 1970 foi a melhor equipe das copas

  • were they playing with their boxers on?!

  • seaman save is better
