@nurseeroc The m3 utilizes an electromagnetic speaker made by Electro Voice. Separate wires go to the electromagnet brn n? green and black are the output
hey peter, you in Huntington Beach too? im off of Beach and Adams in Huntington Beach! i have a M-100 series, trying to add the 1/4 inch line out. Sounds like you now recommend buying the Trek II unit for 1/4 inch output then trying out your method in this video from over 2 years ago(i saw you craigslist ad). i also have the Boss-RT20 and would love to utilize it with my Hammond. what would be even cooler is to get my 11pin Leslie speaker to work with my M-111! im confused as to what to do
I have a 1/4 out on my L-102, but it's coming directly off of the speaker leads. But, the speakers are still hooked up whenever I turn it on. Should I be worried? (By the way, I got the organ this way. The 2nd owner put this on, and the 3rd owner put a new grounded cord in it.)
@iloverush123 Well, the speaker is taking up most of the load, however you are still running hot into your amp or whatever you are using for effects, etc. You need to get the trek II 1/4" output and install it. The difference is that you have a pot knob on the trek II to control how hot the signal is going to be. It's no wonder I haven't blown anything up the way I was doing it before in this video.
I'm a guitarist new to organs. This M3 sounds lovely. Although, I noticed when you switched on the power there was a noticeable hum coming from the speaker. Is this normal of analog organs? I know the new digital keyboards like the Nord Electro don't have any of that sort of thing. Are there methods of removing the hum from these older models? Rewiring? Grounding?
@chrisrave Grounding is always an option, but it depends on how your organ is setup, and how you are getting signal. If you have a B3 and Leslie, and want to record it, put it in a sound proof room and mic it correctly. If you are live, eh, there will be a little of that regardless. if you are using line outputs, trek II, then at that point, its just like any other instrument. I don't use this setup in this video anymore. It was too dangerous. I installed the Trek II mod for a line out.
Why don't you guys just get a Speaker-to-lineout adapter ? I've done this on both an M3 and an A100 with beautiful results. Just go to a car audio store and get the adapter. It consists of a pair of tiny transformers and a trim-pot for each level adjust. It has two separate speaker-in wires to run from your speaker ( ALWAYS PUT A LOAD IN THE FORM OF A CERAMIC HEAT RESISTOR Xohm + to- OF AN UNHOOKED SPEAKER Xohm + and -) & an L&R RCA line-out.
how hard is it to fix up one of these? There's one at my place of work in major disrepair; one half-smashed tube (the anti-EMF sleeve is holding it), a stub of crusty, cracked (recommend grounded?) power cord, probably needs some oil (what type?), etc.
This has since been modfied!!!! DO NOT USE THIS 1/4" setup!!!!! It will blow out your amp, or whatever you plug in to. I've since added a Trek II 1/4" output that controls the hot signal. I'm surprised I didn't blow up anything already!!!!!!! So anyway, video coming on that soon....
I've used the 1/4" rig for years with no prob, BUT, let me add, I've only used it as a direct to mixer or recorder function... I've never used it to send the signal to an amp or Leslie. I'm theorizing that sending it simply to an amp's input would be safe, but since I haven't done that, I couldn't guarantee. Good Luck and keep me (us all...) up on any additional caveats. RPC (Novena Boy)
Does that work well for you? I had a '58 m3 as well for some time, and it had an after-market reverb tank which I hooked up a 1/4" to. Unfortunately, I blew my Leslie 145 since the signal was too hot and over time put too much strain on the tubes. I recently acquired an L100, which is the easiest to make a line out from (has a single RCA out before the preamp!)
whoa! I got scared when I saw that box that you made. Does it put some sort of load on the amp when you switch to the alternative line out? I hope so, or you could wreck the Hammond's output transformer.
It's just the signal line,... the speaker wire that goes to the speaker. It's just a cut off switch to switch between speaker, or to send it to a 1/4" line out.
Ya, that's what is scaring me. If I am understanding things right, you need a resistance load on the amp to replace the speaker when you switch the speaker out of the circuit. It should supply the same load as your speaker would, other wise you risk blowing your OT. This is assuming that it is the same sort of idea as guitar tube amps.
Sorry, I guess you are right because it is just a preamp and not a poweramp. It is different than a typical guitar amp. I assume that it must be safe if wikihow says its ok.
I've gotten mixed reviews on this setup. Half of the people I've talked to say it's ok, and half say that it's dangerous. A hammond tech said that it should be fine, especially since I've been using like that without any trouble. The other epxert I talked to said it is dangerous for the same reason's you said. But the Hammond tech said that the tube amps are different than the guitar amps. I'll let you know more if I come across more info. Any ideas?
i picked up a m3 with reverb a few months back (my first organ that wasn't digital) it is awesome! i was wondering about how to insall a lineout, thanks ever so much, carl
Nice stuff Eric. You still need a Leslie. I saw you were trying to sell your CV on Ebay. I wasn't keeping track of it so I didn't see if it sold. Hopefully it did. I'm still lovin' my CV.
I thought I posted the title a while back, guess I didn't! It's the " Big Organ Trio", Mr. Mike Mangan, out of Califonia.

@nurseeroc I learned tube amps need loads the hard way. I blew up many a guitar amp. Thanks.

IDEA:
Use L line out > FX > AMP B to R Line out.

@HappyDiscoDeath it's also been modded with a single power toggle switch to replace the (still intact) pair of original switches.

i have a question when you replace the tubes on the hammond do you have to re-bias it
