  • I recently got a 4 month old hand reared/tamed female cockatiel pearl somethign she is lol shes sooo cute i just bought her from someone just a day ago so yea we're seeing if she will get used to us and sing from time to time.

We also have a male but his aggressive towards us and hisses and im unsure if we will put them both together or not at all.. :(

  • Hehe, no need for DNA tests... boys are the little talkers. Gorgeous 'tiel, both of mine were amused by this video!

  • that is a male cockatiel

  • what a cute little camera hog Krys is!

  • mine was hand tamed at 3 months.

  • if your cockatiel has bright orange on their cheeks, then its a male....not so bright orange are the females.

  • i have a 6 mth old white-faced cockatiel. everyone said she would be mean and she wouldn't whistle or talk but she does both and she has never bit once...even if she doesn't know you, she'll go right to you...and she loves my teeth :Dl ol

  • how did you get him hand tamed so fast?

Mine is only 5 months old and he is not hand tamed yet any tips?

  • Krystal was only 2 weeks old when i got him and I spoon feed him on spiecal food till he was old enough to eat seed

  • Oh. I got my bird when he was 4 months old.

  • @avachat17 Seed is VERY VERY VERY bad for your birds..... it's extremely high in fat and very hard on their livers--- causing them to develop many liver problems and die much faster than normal.

Get him onto a pellet + Fresh vegetable diet asap .... or you could be cutting your companions life very short.

  • aww I have an 8 month cockatiel!

  • good way to get that bird sick putting your mouth in his

  • mine is a female she can't talk yet but she has learned 3 whistles and she is a year old =) well around there.

  • he speaks the truth .. female cockatiels are non vocal at all ude grow old trying to get them to sing stuff .. but the males are great .. mine hasnt started whisling anything too complicated but he mimics the other birds when hes outside in his cage in the summer ...

  • noone can tell me how you can tell if my bird is female or male can you tell if there is anything i can look for thanks

  • If it's a male you can tell by behaviour: male cockatiels are the singers and talkers!

On the other hand: if your cockatiel doesn't sing that doesn't mean it's a female. We have two male cockatiels, one a real macho man, while the other one doesn't sing or talk.

  • thats true as well .. but its the most affective way to tell unless u take ur bird to get checked out .. or the person who sold it to u knows before hand .. i lucked out and got my bird from a man who knows birds very well , and told me he was a male .. as well as the fact that he never shuts up and chirps and sings at everything that makes noise .lol

  • wat 1144 most parrot birds have what they call cere on the top of there beaks males cere is blue or purpleish , females its either pinkish or brown.

  • look at their faces, if the color is dark and distinct it a male, if its light, a famale. Also, you can tell behaviorlly. Like males do talk more, and louder

  • Thats totally untrue, females are fully capable of talking, singing and whistling. They can be just as vocal as males, but in general females usually aren't very vocal, but its fully possible.

  • ya there not vocal .. unlike real women .. who never shut the fuck up ..

  • So cute!! I just got mine a little over a week ago and she hasnt sang yet just chirped a little

    I love your Video

  • a cockatiel singing like your cockatiel automaticly = male. Female cockatiels don't sing melodys.

Sorry to see you spent money on DNAing your birdie =[

  • My tiel tried to sing along lol!

  • omg your cockatail looks like picacho

  • hey i have a one year old cockatiel who looks exactly likes yours!!

one way to tell whether if its a girl or boy is by lookin at their heads. if the head is a bright yellow or very vibrant color then its a boy. girls tend to have a grayish/dark colored head

  • My cockatiel is all gray with a white head, hes so cute! But he does not chirp that much, when he does its when I leave the room or when I play music, when I take him out of the cage he does not chirp at all! what do I do?

  • he usually chirps or whistles when hes near someone hes comfortable with idk maybe you don't spend enough time with him or doesn't like you try playing more music and melodies so he learns them

  • call it chris

  • i just bought my cockatiel and i would like to know what should i do to teach him to speak or whristle a melody?? Can someone please tell me?? Thanks...

  • just keep repeating the same word or something over and over again and pretty soon he will say it back :)

  • my cockatiel is a female, she is pure grey all over she has patches on her cheeks like pikachu

  • Soooo cute our female hasjust started sayin hello... We are hoping that our male will start copying her..

  • molto bella

  • Aww, Krys/Krystal looks just like my cockatiel~! His name is Nero. =] Nero loves being the center of attention too. If you ignore him, he crawls up your leg and sits on your shoulder. xD

  • Hysterical! I bet its going to be tough not to call him Krystal! haha.

  • So whats the verdict? I think Krystal is a boy! LOL

  • Ok DNA results are in Krystal is a MALE so maybe we should call him Krys now.

  • I think that this bird is a Boy!!Girls don't normally talk like that, and the Yellow Head is the giveaway visually.

  • Hi, we will find out next week if krystal is a boy or a girl as I had a DNA test done to find out.

  • Female and male lutinos are both yellow-headed, unlike the grey or cinamon or pied or pearl cockatiels where the female may or may not be such a blonde (but will usually have SOME yellow on her face -- even if it's not a lot).

  • See,I don't have very much experience with the Lutinos, but this one looks Pied to me anyway...be he is sooo cute!!

  • You're right. It is pied. I didn't look closely enough. Sorry.

  • Its Okay, its hard as H*** to visually sex sometimes, let alone all the markings on a lutino or pied...no biggie

  • I feel really stupid right now. I bred cockatiels for over 10 years and I missed that! *smacks forehead* See what happens when I don't get enough to eat?

  • Ya sound like me...but its also what happens when you stay up half the night, looking or posting for your missing cockatiel, when all you had to do was clip the poor things wings,duh...if anyone need to smack themselves on the head, its definitely me,trust me.

  • (((Rowansilverskye)))

    I hope you find him/her.

  • (((Rowansilverskye)))

    I hope you find him/her.

  • My vet told me with my cockatiel that if it(especially in lutinos) has light striping on the underside of its tail feathers then it is a female. Sadly the only way to tell for 100% sure is DNA testing, lol but yeah.

  • Correct. The striping is a way to tell. But because lutino striping tends to be so hard to see, DNA is the only 100% way to tell (not to mention that genetic mutations in males of any species of cockatiel can cause the striping that people use to determine gender).

  • Oh no I understand I had a lutino and I was just saying that it is another way to tell, I could see my Lutino's easily when the sunlight hit the cage but otherwise it was difficult. The lighter striping actually had a very irridescent color to them so.. I was just saying lol

  • My very first cockatiel (a very bright & colorful pied mutation) was a he until "he" started laying eggs at the age of 6. Even the pet shop sold him as a male. Surprise!

She had a boy name too.

  • OMG thats exactly like my bird. we bought him as a he 2 1/2 years ago but about a year ago 'he' became a she when we saw her pop out a couple of eggs. now 'she's' popping out eggs every 3-5 weeks :S:S oh and his name's dr phil ;)

  • omg thats exactly what happened when i bought my bird. we bought him almost 3 years ago n it was a he until a year ago when 'he' started to lay eggs. now dr phil lays eggs every 3-5 weeks :S:S

  • so im going to say that krystal is a male, because it has a bright yellow face and bright orange cheek patches. also females have white stripes under there tail and spots under the wings. males have this too as a baby but loose it as they mature females dont. so check that too. goodluck.

  • But judgeing by your video, im going to say that krystal is a he. just because it has a very bright yellow face and orange cheek patches. also females have stripes under the tail and spots under the wings, males have these too as a baby but loose them. females dont. so check that. goodluck.

  • females normally have darker faces either grey or brown looking with pale oranges cheek patches, and the male has the bright yellow face and bright orange cheek patches, but in the lutino species the male and the female can look the same with bright yellow face and orange cheek patches. only the lutino female tend to have a rather paler yellow and orange to where the male will have brighter yellow and orange.

  • What a cutie!! Does she have the freedom to go where she wants? I have 4 tiels and their cage door is open at all times and a latter leading up to their cage. They are the most docile and gentle birds I have ever known. I love them!!

  • Yes she is out the cage most of the time when we are home. But when we are at work she goes to her cage as we have 2 cats who also have the run of the house and she picks on them.

  • Thats funny

i have a question how much time do they have to spend with us? how do i interact with my cokateil more?

  • Our bird cage is in the living area so she see us all the time if she is in the cage. Cover the cage at night with a light sheet but leave the light on till you go to bed but talk to your bird or whistle a tune so it knows you are there. When we go to work we leave the radio going for the bird so she hears voices all the time. We have had Krystal since the day she hatched (her mum and dad are outside in the big aviary) we bought her inside when 2 weeks old and hand fed her.

  • Are you sure your bird is female? Males are usually the vocal ones. Also, with as bright as the coloring is, I'd be willing to bet it's a male. Very cute, though! And seems very sweet. :-)

  • No we are not sure Krystal is girl, but is the same markings as mum, dad is a white Lutino. They had 2 babies 1 of each colour. Either way we love our little mate, he/she is learning more words every week.

  • I know exactly what you mean. I got mine from a girl who had him until he was about 6 months old. She named him Pixie. Now I know he's male, but I didn't change his name even though it's kind of girly. :-) Your bird is very beautiful and obviously affectionate and sweet. Keep up the great work teaching new words!

  • haha sounded like a gecko
