  • I was so entranced, I actually attempted to fav this twice... :) And to all those classical purists among us: Sure, Bach is a titan, but there comes a time when I get tired of the same old 4/4 or 6/8. Harmony and clever contrapuntal voice-leading aren't the only elements with emotional impact, you know. When it comes to rhythms and time sigs, western European music is actually quite poor, in my opinion. And percussion instruments are virtually absent from the "elevated" stuff like baroque & co.

  • @jackburton2009, I love Bulgarian music too, it's absolutely my favorite folk music, completely otherworldly. However your comment about music w/African origins seems pretty racist. Civilization was born on the African continent, so music was pretty much invented there. And there are many incredible and beautiful African traditions I can point your towards.

  • I was actually expecting this to be afghan music because It's in the movie "Restrepo" (a movie about american soldiers in the Korengal valley, Afghanistan).

  • thats amazing talent a real music lover would love this

  • This wonderful music is a way for the cosmos to know itself !!

  • Only 33 000 views?

  • God Bless all of you! Thank you Grandma for awakening the Holy Spirit in us. May God have mercy on all of our souls, forgive us of our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.

    Sooo beautiful!

  • @ZachreyCA This song has nothing to do with religion.Bulgarian music predates christianity.

  • Now Now ... Calm down everyone & just appreciate this for what it is . Absolutely amazing & sends shivers up my spine ! And it`s nice to know it`s winging it`s way through space for eternity

  • This song reminded my grant grand father days who he died in his early age

  • Folks there's only one race and thats the HUMAN race. God put us here as caretakers of this part of creation. Until he says otherwise I'm going to continue to love my fellow humans as my brothers & sisters.

  • Forget that jerk, it's a simple ignorant...the great difference between this FANTASTIC song and artist and that jerk is that while the jerk is beeing forgotten this bulgarian song will live forever !

  • The Voyager record contained not only this bit of music, but bits of Bach, modicums of Mozart, and even a bit of Chuck Berry.

As well as hundreds of pictures, info on our biochemistry, and instructions on how to retrieve the data.

It's not very likely this "message in a bottle" will ever be found by anyone. But it is, at least, a record of humanity, and is sort of a time capsule to the stars.

  • No other nation have beautiful music like our traditional music

  • Not being able to understand the words, this song represents to me the passion of life and all that is contained within human experience. Just hearing it makes me happy to be alive. It's beautiful!

  • I've loved this recording since I first heard it in the early 80s on the "Cosmos" series by Carl Sagan. I bought the soundtrack album because I had to know what the song was, then I bought the original "Village Music of Bulgaria" album to hear more. It's still amazing...

  • yes thats how capitalism works. one thing makes you buy another and you never end consuming

  • I just came here from Wikipedia, it says she got a song on the voyager golden record (songs that where sent to space by the NASA to tell aliens how we are/where living here on earth) It's sad somehow, that these folk things will slowly disappear. Let's all hope something different, something good though will come instead.

  • American culture forgets what real soul and feeling sounds like. We focus on all the negative things about our society and complain about it in our music. This is culture, this is feeling, this is musci

  • Here are the lyrics, moron: Delyo the hayduk went out With the peasants From the villages of Dumov and Karadzhov. Delyo spoke and ordered The Turkish officials and the kabadalye* "I have two aunts in the villages: Do not turn them into Turks; Do not convert them. For when I go down into the village Many mothers will be crying And even more young brides."
  • Amazing!

    Greetings from Poland.

  • It gives me shivers every time I listen to it....Such a talanted singer, it's unbelievable.

    I'M PROUD TO BE BULGARIAN.

  • Finally, some real tradition, some real culture, some real soul in music. A link to our ancient European past.

I am American and I love this song.

I find folk music like this very beautiful and enchanting. Please keep it alive.

I am so sick of this modern music, this degenerate style with African beats. It's vulgar and primitive.

Compare to such ethereal music as this. It lifts the spirit and makes one feel alive.

    Thank you, old Bulgaria.

    I also enjoy Nevena's version.

  • Happy to hear from someone from america thats not ignorant . this song is a verry special one for the bulgarian nation , it represents 500 years of enslavement and atrocious deeds by the ottomans, and the brave heroes who dared to opose them - Delyo and many many more both known and unknown . i had the privelige to hear this live ! It was enchanting, it left me without words, she always performs without a microphone coz her voice is too loud for the sound systems

  • You've shown yourself to be vulgar and primitive without a doubt.

Bulgarians are an Indo-European people as is their language.

The song is about resisting the Asiatic invaders.

  • Are you fuking stupid?Or just incredibly retarted? This music is way older than Back and Mozart. The Buglarian folklore was a european music way before germany or spain were formed as a country.

  • It may very well be the first european music after the greek's little loony toones that they called music.Asiatic? It very well could be.All of europe comes from Asia if you dont know that. Its just that some kept theyre ancient traditions and others didnt

  • Oh yeah and who are you to decide?Nobody.I ADORE classsical especialy Chopin, but ive never ever compared him to bulgarian folk, becouse these things are simply from different worlds.Just becouse you dont like 1 thing and like a 2 thing doesnt mean the 2 thing is better.

  • Silly argument. It is highly unlikely that any aliens who'd bump into our probe would be able to date the music contained therein or determine its date of creation relative to the other pieces, or its artistic "greatness." What Sagan sought to do was give a snapshot of humanity, and this is certainly a valid part of that effort. This music arises from a tradition as valid as Mozart's, if less dynamic. (And why pick Mozart, anyway? Why not something "contemporary"? Because it's lovely, perhaps?)

  • Oh yeah yeah, and what about Romania?Bulgarians who were the wall for christianity and Europe in the middleages? The serbs, croats, vlachs who gave theyre live defending europe?Fuking idiot, you should die from youre ignorance stupid fuk.Europe is not only what you like in it idiot.

  • "Spain was muslim during the middle ages and you see they are not as european as the rest of Europe today."

  • what does the dress have to do with resistance? pfff, duuuude i espect that if you listen baroque you will be civilised and smart but i only see here you are really a prick.

NO don't look at the dress but look carefull at they`re religions, state, folklore. That's the resistance. You don't even have the simplest aknowledge about turks and what they did to us. So you kid..just go and listen gothic rock , cut your veines and say TOKIO HOTEEEL.

  • @DRAGOVODA With all my respect, you're also quick to judge. Gothic rock has nothing to do with the silly pop-rock emo "music" as tokio hotel's (deliberately written like this). As a matter of fact, I listen to goth rock (also metal, classical music and many other genres) but I LOVE my country, I adore its traditional music, clothes and customs :) Just because someone was so ignorant not to see the beauty of this and all our national songs, doesn't mean all of us "kids" are such fools.

  • who are you to say such words? With what right do you say so? Probably you don't know that this part of the world was long time ago a shield for Europe for your beloved baroque music if we weren't here probably Notre-Damme were beeing converted into mosque by turks. Do you even have the smallest history khowledge? Read about the rezistance of these peoples. By your words you didn't insulted bulgarians but also me, a romanian who know the price we have payed for freedom !

  • @jackburton2009 sorry to read racism in your words, thats the real degeneration, vulgarity and primitive thinking.

    good bye

  • Preserving and venerating one's tradition and people is never degenerate or vulgar. Enjoy your primitive gyration dancing and obnoxious beats.

  • @jackburton2009 the "One man against dance" ? :)

sorry to see you telling such stupid comments in besides this beautiful music.

Go find a way without hate.

  • @zurtur the "gyrating cannibal"

My comment is the highest rated here, you're the odd man out.

Now stop cluttering up the comments with your nonsense.

  • @jackburton2009 Bulgarians in Europe can only be dated to the early Middle Ages only. They are not ancient Europeans per say and did not start out as Europeans at all but Asiatics who were Slavicized.

  • @jackburton2009 all slavic etno songs sound like that besides russia they suck

  • @jackburton2009 with a sprinkle of racist for good measure

  • @SiteNovaVideos Typical anti-White, Marxist, Canadian nitwit.

  • Comment removed

  • @jackburton2009 Way to ruin an awesome song with racist bile. Jackass.

  • @deicidalRuffian Way to be completely illogical and a waste of oxygen. Comments don't ruin a song, you massive moron.

  • heyy....we are learning about the golden record and this is one of the songs on it...we watched this video and i we are in America so some of us thought it was weird but i think it is kinda cool. my choir director is in bulgaria. please comment back wat you think!

  • Delyo the hayduk went out With the peasants From the villages of Dumov and Karadzhov. Delyo spoke and ordered The Turkish officials and the kabadalye* "I have two aunts in the villages: Do not turn them into Turks; Do not convert them. For when I go down into the village Many mothers will be crying And even more young brides." *Kabadalye = "tough guys", a term used for those who collaborated with / joined in the war activities of the Ottomans.
  • Izlel ye Delyo haydutin, Haydutin yenkesadžiye, S Dumbovci i s Karadžovci. Zaročal Deljo puročal Deridarskimnem ayene, Ayene kabadalye. - V selono yimam dve leli, Da mi gi ne poturčite, Da mi gi ni počornite, [this version ends here] Či ga si slezam v selono, Mnočko štat maiki da plaknat, Po-mnočko, mladi nevesti.

  • i love both romania and bulgaria, because romanians and bulgarians are descendants of tracians. romanians and bulgarians are brothers

  • for sorre, the young people in Bulgaria preffer to sing and listen the "eassy" pop-music only... along with some "musical soup", called "pop-folk" or "chalga" - translations of simplified songs having nothing common with this...

  • This music is beautiful, I've been hearing it in my dreams and spent days listening to folk songs around the world before I found this...gives me the shivers.

  • I hope there are many young people in bulgaria keeping this style of singing alive.

It's among the best things on this earth.

  • I wish all you die who dont like Bulgarians ! And i wish you all die who are posting fucking noobish comments ... BULGARIA IS THE BEST (bow)

  • The voyager 1 and 2 will carry on floating through space long after humans are gone. Theyre expected to continue for 2 at least 2 billion years , before space dust erodes them to nothing.

  • It's so beautiful - it brings tears to my eyes.

  • i love bulgarian folk music

  • Have you heard Juno Reactor - God is god?

It uses the theme from this song, even with her own voice. I dont know if Juno Reactor gives credits Valya Balkanska but the song is beautiful and I am very proud as a Bulgarian!

  • LionHeartBG

  • El3mEn0Pe3 YOU ARE KIND OF A DUM ASS GO LISTEN TO 5o (S)cent

  • Rumi I agree with you, most newly created countries will only dream to reach the level of this BULGArian Song. Leave the uneducated unfortunate souls to make fools of themselves. I am RPOUD WITH this song, recently i saw an article about "Baba Vanga" which just reminded me, of how even in a difficult situation right now My country has given birth to the most special and spiritually rich people in the WORLD and will continue to because its ancient and the one undesputable thing it has is SPIRIT.

  • what's the matter with you? this song has been recognized and appreciated world wide. It has been part of Voyager 1 and 2 - IT TRAVELS IN SPACE you idiot. Listen to your shit rap music or go throw yourself of a building. NO ONE IN AMERICA, WHERE I AM GUESSING YOU ARE FROM CAN'T SING LIKE THAT AND NEVER WILL BE ABLE TO, BECAUSE THIS IS COSMIC MUSIC, THE MOST RICHEST CULTURE AND FOLKLORE IN THE WORLD, THE MOST AMAZING VOICES AND SONGS - BULGARIA!

  • The most tallented granny!

There...she, who is an educated singer and a musician would be very flattered to hear that comment!

  • fuck you, you don't know anything about bulgarian songs or culture

  • Listen you idiot, you obviously cannot appreciate music. This woman has a great voice and the songs is really beautifull.

  • you're fucking deaf and the fact that you're so opinionated just shows how ignorant you are

  • Uhm.. dude.. the song was chosen from The World (among Beethoven and Bach) to be sent on the Golden Record with Voyager many years ago.. and that record being off of the Solar System for several years.. Just read the NASA site :P

  • outterspaces is right!!! Valia's voice traveled in space for real!and may be in time:)

    (i wish you die djipsi)

I LOVE BULGARIA THAT IS MY COUNTRI !

  • soon or later, everybody will

  • fuck you americans

  • not to mention the fact that her voice was measured back in the late 70's and proven to be higher than 2 full orchestras equipped with microphones when she had none. And still the voice was clear and in the perfect pitch.

  • Not so much "still the voice was clear and in perfect pitch", but because of those criteria, she was able to outmessaure(correct spelling?) two full orchestras. It's not about volume, it's all about focus. Well, I guess that was my slightl patronizing line for tonight. Time for sleep

  • Are you retarded? How can you say that this is "low-life"? Saying these words you offend all bulgarians, proud of their origin...what do you think is more valuable "Maple Combat" or a song that's fliyng in space among Beethoven and Bach...I really think, that there is something wrong with you...

(Now to english "fuck you little bastard")

  • .

    .

  • That is absolutely stunning.

  • God bless you Valia!

Thank you for giving us such a sublime emotions and thank you for the excellent representation of our Bulgaria and its culture to the world - with this song actually - you are representing the Human Civilization to the UNIVERSE!!!

God bless you and God bless Bulgaria!

  • Bulgarian folk music is TOTALLY beautiful, haunting and stunning. I have been a big fan of this genre for many years and I like the fact that some of these women are not young it makes such a change. Some artists get better as they get older. I am really thrilled that people on you Tube are uploading this music for others to see. For me a great honour to finally get decent information on these extraordinary people.

  • @Plectra666 Yes I agree. Age and lifes trials puts a character in an older persons voice that cant be equalled.

  • does anyone know the name of the "Juno Reactor" remix of this song.

God is god.

  • that instrument looks like a dismembered pig

    what is it?

  • it's called "gaida" (гайда) and the most accurate translation in english is bag-pipe. it does, in fact, resemble bag-pipes or spanish "gaitas", though all three have their own peculiarities (most obvious of which is sound ;)).

google it for more information. :)

  • thank you

  • LOL!!!!!!!!!!

  • The fact that she prefers to live in oblivion and not follow the Vanessa Mae syndrome by actually killing all good Bach works, doesn't say she's no good. If she wasn't, he song won't be now out of the solar system. It would be Madonnas, or Tina Turners... or Joplin's. :).. All good singers, with skills and all, but im sure neither of them had 7 octaves voice range.

  • Before you disagree, sunriseatnoon, you better first this granny's music achievement. Name me one other person in the world that will sing with no mic along with 3 full orchestras in LA (all equipped with mics) and her voice will still be stronger and stable than all the.. what...250 soloists?

  • Nqma kato drugite da pi6a vsi4ko na angliiski, tova e tipi4no za Bulgaria, taka 4e 6te go kaja napravo na bylgarski - BULGARIA E EDNA 4UDESNA STRANA, KOGATO SLU6AM TOVA CQLATA NASTRYHVAM, SAMO UPRAVLENIETO NA BULGARIA KUCA, NO AZ NIKOGA NIKOGA NQMA DA NAPUSNA TAZI DYRJAVA!!!!!!

    BULGARIA IS EVERYTHING

  • I come from where this woman is from and im a proud Bulgarian, i serve my country and i love and miss every single mountain and everysingle piece of dust i left behind in that country. If we keep passing pit knowlage and myths in out generations bulgaria will be a golden country full of legents and gold mines. I love Bulgaria and i am proud to call my self Bulgarian!

  • For me, this is the quintessential transcendent sound - what a great choice for the Voyager project. What are the words about? How can I hear other singing from this artist?

  • She's singing about Delio, a haidouk (the haidouks were something like Robin Hood during the Ottoman slavery in Bulgaria :P. Usually, they were high up in the mountains or in the woods), who is telling the Turks to leave his 2 aunts in the village alone and not to harm them. Otherwise, he'll come back from the mountain and will make many mothers cry.

  • Beautiful music, beautiful country, beautiful people I would say...Just...visit Bulgaria.

  • We are Bulgarian muslims (pomaci) - we are the proudest Bulgarians...Let the world knows this! We will keel Rhodopes mountin forever the heart and the credle of Bulgaria! The traditions and the music as you see have nowhere in the world... FOREVER BULGARIA!!!!

  • Valya Balkanska is 65 y.o. Bulgarian folk singer with amazing voice. In 1977 Carl Sagan, the American astronomer and physicist, sent the Rhodope singer Valya Balkanska's performance of the song "Delyu Haitutin" as a message to space. Each of the two space stations - "Voyager I" and "Voyager II", had a gold-plated gramophone record, containing the voices, whispers, songs an music pieces of our planet. On their way to Ursa Minor, the stations would fly for a period of about sixty thousand years.

  • This song has been chosen by Karl Sagan to be put in Voyager and to be sent in Space, as a musicial signiture of the Earth....

  • tazi pesen e naj-vyzdejstva6tata i naj-prekrasnata sred folklonoto ni tvor4estvo.

  • Thats no grany idiot.Pay more respect to thet womand. This butifull song performd by that great bulgarian singer is chosed from all the songs in the planet Earth to be send in space whit the capsul Vouajer.

  • Be polite. Take it easy
