I was so entranced, I actually attempted to fav this twice... :) And to all those classical purists among us: Sure, Bach is a titan, but there comes a time when I get tired of the same old 4/4 or 6/8. Harmony and clever contrapuntal voice-leading aren't the only elements with emotional impact, you know. When it comes to rhythms and time sigs, western European music is actually quite poor, in my opinion. And percussion instruments are virtually absent from the "elevated" stuff like baroque & co.
@jackburton2009, I love Bulgarian music too, it's absolutely my favorite folk music, completely otherworldly. However your comment about music w/African origins seems pretty racist. Civilization was born on the African continent, so music was pretty much invented there. And there are many incredible and beautiful African traditions I can point your towards.
I was actually expecting this to be afghan music because It's in the movie "Restrepo" (a movie about american soldiers in the Korengal valley, Afghanistan).
God Bless all of you! Thank you Grandma for awakening the Holy Spirit in us. May God have mercy on all of our souls, forgive us of our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.

The majority of the people commenting here dont think and only repeat common places. Sagan was thinking that freaky aliens would love to listen to freaky music and so he chose this to be sent to space. The greatest musical achievement in history is baroque and classical music. The rest is monotone crap for religious and narcotic purposes and avant-garde nonsense.
Not being able to understand the words, this song represents to me the passion of life and all that is contained within human experience. Just hearing it makes me happy to be alive. It's beautiful!
I've loved this recording since I first heard it in the early 80s on the "Cosmos" series by Carl Sagan. I bought the soundtrack album because I had to know what the song was, then I bought the original "Village Music of Bulgaria" album to hear more. It's still amazing...
I just came here from Wikipedia, it says she got a song on the voyager golden record (songs that where sent to space by the NASA to tell aliens how we are/where living here on earth) It's sad somehow, that these folk things will slowly disappear. So why dont we choose something more contemporary to represent Europe? Yes, I know, all humans come from an african ancestor. All living things come from a molecule that cloned itself billions of years ago. Bach and Mozart created a music which roots are in folklore, BUT they transformed it into something highly superior. That is the greatest artistical achievement of Europe and its cultural emblem. Not this.

what does the dress have to do with resistance? pfff, duuuude i espect that if you listen baroque you will be civilised and smart but i only see here you are really a prick.
NO don't look at the dress but look carefull at they`re religions, state, folklore. That's the resistance. You don't even have the simplest aknowledge about turks and what they did to us. So you kid..just go and listen gothic rock , cut your veines and say TOKIO HOTEEEL.
@DRAGOVODA With all my respect, you're also quick to judge. Gothic rock has nothing to do with the silly pop-rock emo "music" as tokio hotel's (deliberately written like this). As a matter of fact, I listen to goth rock (also metal, classical music and many other genres) but I LOVE my country, I adore its traditional music, clothes and customs :) Just because someone was so ignorant not to see the beauty of this and all our national songs, doesn't mean all of us "kids" are such fools.
who are you to say such words? With what right do you say so? Probably you don't know that this part of the world was long time ago a shield for Europe for your beloved baroque music if we weren't here probably Notre-Damme were beeing converted into mosque by turks. Do you even have the smallest history khowledge? Read about the rezistance of these peoples. By your words you didn't insulted bulgarians but also me, a romanian who know the price we have payed for freedom !
@jackburton2009 Bulgarians in Europe can only be dated to the early Middle Ages only. They are not ancient Europeans per say and did not start out as Europeans at all but Asiatics who were Slavicized.
heyy....we are learning about the golden record and this is one of the songs on it...we watched this video and i we are in America so some of us thought it was weird but i think it is kinda cool. my choir director is in bulgaria. please comment back wat you think!

for sorre, the young people in Bulgaria preffer to sing and listen the "eassy" pop-music only... along with some "musical soup", called "pop-folk" or "chalga" - translations of simplified songs having nothing common with this...
This music is beautiful, I've been hearing it in my dreams and spent days listening to folk songs around the world before I found this...gives me the shivers.
The voyager 1 and 2 will carry on floating through space long after humans are gone. Theyre expected to continue for 2 at least 2 billion years , before space dust erodes them to nothing.
It uses the theme from this song, even with her own voice. I dont know if Juno Reactor gives credits Valya Balkanska but the song is beautiful and I am very proud as a Bulgarian!
Благодаря, трябва всички да се подкрепяме, все пак България е най-важна. Трябва да защитаваме всичко родно,за да може бъдещите поколения да се гордеят, че са Българи и да ценят Българската културата и историята.
Rumi I agree with you, most newly created countries will only dream to reach the level of this BULGArian Song. Leave the uneducated unfortunate souls to make fools of themselves. I am RPOUD WITH this song, recently i saw an article about "Baba Vanga" which just reminded me, of how even in a difficult situation right now My country has given birth to the most special and spiritually rich people in the WORLD and will continue to because its ancient and the one undesputable thing it has is SPIRIT.
what's the matter with you? this song has been recognized and appreciated world wide. It has been part of Voyager 1 and 2 - IT TRAVELS IN SPACE you idiot. Listen to your shit rap music or go throw yourself of a building. NO ONE IN AMERICA, WHERE I AM GUESSING YOU ARE FROM CAN'T SING LIKE THAT AND NEVER WILL BE ABLE TO, BECAUSE THIS IS COSMIC MUSIC, THE MOST RICHEST CULTURE AND FOLKLORE IN THE WORLD, THE MOST AMAZING VOICES AND SONGS - BULGARIA!
Uhm.. dude.. the song was chosen from The World (among Beethoven and Bach) to be sent on the Golden Record with Voyager many years ago.. and that record being off of the Solar System for several years.. Just read the NASA site :P
not to mention the fact that her voice was measured back in the late 70's and proven to be higher than 2 full orchestras equipped with microphones when she had none. And still the voice was clear and in the perfect pitch.
Not so much "still the voice was clear and in perfect pitch", but because of those criteria, she was able to outmessaure(correct spelling?) two full orchestras. It's not about volume, it's all about focus. Well, I guess that was my slightl patronizing line for tonight. Time for sleep
Are you retarded? How can you say that this is "low-life"? Saying these words you offend all bulgarians, proud of their origin...what do you think is more valuable "Maple Combat" or a song that's fliyng in space among Beethoven and Bach...I really think, that there is something wrong with you...
Майкати да еба малко келеменце мрасно долно копеленце.Какво разбираш ти от музика бе говно умряло да ти еба маиката дрислива леке смотано дриливо(Now to english "fuck you little bastard")
Thank you for giving us such a sublime emotions and thank you for the excellent representation of our Bulgaria and its culture to the world - with this song actually - you are representing the Human Civilization to the UNIVERSE!!!
Bulgarian folk music is TOTALLY beautiful, haunting and stunning. I have been a big fan of this genre for many years and I like the fact that some of these women are not young it makes such a change. Some artists get better as they get older. I am really thrilled that people on you Tube are uploading this music for others to see. For me a great honour to finally get decent information on these extraordinary people.
it's called "gaida" (гайда) and the most accurate translation in english is bag-pipe. it does, in fact, resemble bag-pipes or spanish "gaitas", though all three have their own peculiarities (most obvious of which is sound ;)).
The fact that she prefers to live in oblivion and not follow the Vanessa Mae syndrome by actually killing all good Bach works, doesn't say she's no good. If she wasn't, he song won't be now out of the solar system. It would be Madonnas, or Tina Turners... or Joplin's. :).. All good singers, with skills and all, but im sure neither of them had 7 octaves voice range.
Before you disagree, sunriseatnoon, you better first this granny's music achievement. Name me one other person in the world that will sing with no mic along with 3 full orchestras in LA (all equipped with mics) and her voice will still be stronger and stable than all the.. what...250 soloists?

I vehemently disagree this lady is the "world's most talented grannie"..mercy! But that bagpipe has to be unusual..I've never seen such an obese one. Usually disfavor is found with the unknown. Or so I notice.
Nqma kato drugite da pi6a vsi4ko na angliiski, tova e tipi4no za Bulgaria, taka 4e 6te go kaja napravo na bylgarski - BULGARIA E EDNA 4UDESNA STRANA, KOGATO SLU6AM TOVA CQLATA NASTRYHVAM, SAMO UPRAVLENIETO NA BULGARIA KUCA, NO AZ NIKOGA NIKOGA NQMA DA NAPUSNA TAZI DYRJAVA!!!!!!
I come from where this woman is from and im a proud Bulgarian, i serve my country and i love and miss every single mountain and everysingle piece of dust i left behind in that country. If we keep passing pit knowlage and myths in out generations bulgaria will be a golden country full of legents and gold mines. I love Bulgaria and i am proud to call my self Bulgarian!
For me, this is the quintessential transcendent sound - what a great choice for the Voyager project. What are the words about? How can I hear other singing from this artist?
She's singing about Delio, a haidouk (the haidouks were something like Robin Hood during the Ottoman slavery in Bulgaria :P. Usually, they were high up in the mountains or in the woods), who is telling the Turks to leave his 2 aunts in the village alone and not to harm them. Otherwise, he'll come back from the mountain and will make many mothers cry.
We are Bulgarian muslims (pomaci) - we are the proudest Bulgarians...Let the world knows this! We will keel Rhodopes mountin forever the heart and the credle of Bulgaria! The traditions and the music as you see have nowhere in the world... FOREVER BULGARIA!!!!
There is a another verison a winner from Bulgarian Idol sings you can see here live. just add this code at the end of youtube dot com watch?v=PWPTqdT79Rs
It's about the struggle of the Bulgarians from the Ottoman Empire and how one Haidut told the Ottomans not to enslave or shame his 2 aunts in the village they were going to.
There is not even one "macedonian song" because there is no "macedonian language" or "macedonian nation" or "macedonian country".Everything in Macedonia is Bulgarian. You are a Bulgarian too
Valya Balkanska is 65 y.o. Bulgarian folk singer with amazing voice. In 1977 Carl Sagan, the American astronomer and physicist, sent the Rhodope singer Valya Balkanska's performance of the song "Delyu Haitutin" as a message to space. Each of the two space stations - "Voyager I" and "Voyager II", had a gold-plated gramophone record, containing the voices, whispers, songs an music pieces of our planet. On their way to Ursa Minor, the stations would fly for a period of about sixty thousand years.
Thats no grany idiot.Pay more respect to thet womand. This butifull song performd by that great bulgarian singer is chosed from all the songs in the planet Earth to be send in space whit the capsul Vouajer.

I am American and I love this song.
I find folk music like this very beautiful and enchanting. Please keep it alive.
I am so sick of this modern music, this degenerate style with African beats. It's vulgar and primitive.
Compare to such ethereal music as this. It lifts the spirit and makes one feel alive.
Thank you, old Bulgaria.
I also enjoy Nevena's version.

Rumi I agree with you, most newly created countries will only dream to reach the level of this BULGArian Song. Leave the uneducated unfortunate souls to make fools of themselves. I am RPOUD WITH this song, recently i saw an article about "Baba Vanga" which just reminded me, of how even in a difficult situation right now My country has given birth to the most special and spiritually rich people in the WORLD and will continue to because its ancient and the one undesputable thing it has is SPIRIT.

not to mention the fact that her voice was measured back in the late 70's and proven to be higher than 2 full orchestras equipped with microphones when she had none. And still the voice was clear and in the perfect pitch.
outterspaces 3 years ago 3
Not so much "still the voice was clear and in perfect pitch", but because of those criteria, she was able to outmessaure(correct spelling?) two full orchestras. It's not about volume, it's all about focus. Well, I guess that was my slightl patronizing line for tonight. Time for sleep

Are you retarded? How can you say that this is "low-life"? Saying these words you offend all bulgarians, proud of their origin...what do you think is more valuable "Maple Combat" or a song that's fliyng in space among Beethoven and Bach...I really think, that there is something wrong with you...

For me, this is the quintessential transcendent sound - what a great choice for the Voyager project. What are the words about? How can I hear other singing from this artist?
nativeplantster 4 years ago 2
She's singing about Delio, a haidouk (the haidouks were something like Robin Hood during the Ottoman slavery in Bulgaria :P. Usually, they were high up in the mountains or in the woods), who is telling the Turks to leave his 2 aunts in the village alone and not to harm them. Otherwise, he'll come back from the mountain and will make many mothers cry.
