I have this camers and have been very happy with it. THe biggest gripe I have though is that the video files are output in Quicktime format and they are HUGE
i want to know how to video in bright light using the G11. I have been to a few gigs and I must not be using the right settings at all...please help me..
I own DSLR cameras but I wanted something light to take with me every where. I had a G9 which was an amazing point-shoot camera, however my G9 got stolen and I ended up buying a G11, if I compare the image quality to the previous camera model, I would pick the G9 anytime! I was so disappointed with the image quality.
to anybody that is asking the question "should i get this or an entry level dslr?" get the dslr the sensor is bigger making your pictures more clear and crisp even if you will never change your kit lens, also this camera looks confusing. an entry level dslr is much more easier. also dslrs do better everything than this camera, a nikon d40 6.1 megapixel camera could take better pictures than this POS
First off, considering your name it is funny that you're giving photography advice. Not that you couldn't, but it is funny.
I got my G11, which I'm very happy with, because a truly expandable dSLR platform is nearly twice the price of my ready to go G11. Factor in portability, the other big factor, and the G11 is the perfect pick.
As for ease of use, the G11 is very easy. And if you have any experience with Canon's interface, like I do, it is even more intuitive.
I purchased this guy, I was recommended it over entry level dlsr's. Picture quality is great, battery life is great, lens is good. Very happy with this purchase.
@WakingDaFallen Are you still happy with your Canon g11? I am thinking about getting one of these- or an antry-level dlsr. I like the portability of this camera and I am sick of buying crappy point and shoots.
In case that you will be using DSLR only the kit lens, take G11. All manuall settings, muuch smaller, but still good image quality (and you are not looking for the very best image quality, otherwise you should not use only kit lenses). Good luck!
DSLR is no good with a kit lens. Infact you need to buy lenses which cost more than an entry level DSLR body itself in order to get the highest quality
@HatroVille -- yes a dslr is always better that one of these point and shoots -- shure a kit lens isnt that great but its way way better than any point and shoot lens
Im torn between getting the G11 or just picking up a Rebel XS... I like the loads of manual control of the G11 but like the ability to change out lenses with a DSLR. Im just not too keen on the bulk of a DSLR though.
The G10 has more megapixels, but also more noise (worse signal to noise ratio). The megapixels were reduced in the G11, but each pixel (or sensor) is larger, thereby improving performance. I would get the G11. But the only thing I don't like about the G11 is the awkward position that your thumb is in when taking a picture. It's too close to other buttons and you (or someone taking your picture) can easily hit another button by mistake. A serious design flaw in my opinion.
there's a hotshoe on the g11, could you attach a eos speedlight onto it, and if it does, will it have ttl and how do you control weather is your speedlight flashing or your build in flash?
dude the 14.7 have nothing on the g11. sure it has a smaller reso but the processor is much better and every pixel is far clearer.
the 3" vs 2.8" = wow 0.2" sacrifice for a swivel !
high iso's on the g10 give crappy images. way to noisy etc.. the bad performance by the g10 on high iso's was the main reason canon lowered the reso on the g11
the only thing the g10 has over the g11 is the sound recorder/voice annotations which i dont understand why canon discarded on the new model.
@AngelDrumStar Are you kidding? Canon did the respectable thing by stoping the cramming of megapixels, which made images look worse since the pixels had to be smaller to fit on the same sensor size. The reduction in megapixels HELPED image quality in this case.
Maybe todays consumers do not really care, or even know what real quality is, so perhaps they would rather see crappy looking low-end HD video and crappy looking low-end high megapixel photos with blown highlights. Unfortunately, based upon the fact that many of todays consumers seem to value features over QUALITY and PERFORMANCE, the camera companies keep providing mediocre compromised solutions, much to the frustration of those who value true quality and performance.
At any given price point, the laws of economics dictates that as you add additional features you must make the other features less good. So to add HD video and other video capabilities to the G11 means that other characteristics, (eg. lens quality, build quality, etc.) must suffer if Canon is going to keep the price below $500. As it is, because of the addition of the swivel LCD screen, the build quality of the G11 has already suffered in comparison to the G10. Check it out for yourself.

We watch HD videos and stills on a 80 screen using a HD front projector and for us nothing else will do. Wed never go back to using an old fashioned camera that didnt take HD videos and stills or have HDMI output. Anything less is so 20th century.
Ok... so what's the deal with having HD video on a Photo Camera?? I think that any person who wants to shoot serious video should buy a video camera instead. For me the most important thing in a camera is to have the ability to take great pictures and the G11 is doing very good in that area. If you are more enthusiastic on the video part then you are looking in the wrong category. It's like wanting to fry an egg on a toaster...
HD is here, embrace it coz you are one of the lucky ones coz some are not so lucky, probably they ask them selves why their particular brand of camera don't have HD video.
i don't see how build quality and innovation get 3/5, considering the fact that there's basically no other camera like this that's A) built like a sherman tank B) has the same functions in a (albeit large) compact camera.
23/30 wouldn't be a camera i'd consider purchasing. from all i've read, expert reviewers like the camera a lot more than that.
ok, so what's the deal with HD. i still can't really decide if it's a deal-breaker. if you're not viewing your masterpieces on an HDTV, does shooting in HD really matter? on most computer screens you wouldn't notice it a bit, would you? also, HD would take up more memory, and take longer to upload videos, no? for most, wouldn't VGA be sufficient? unless i'm missing something, reading reviews that say lack of HD being an inexcusable oversight is a bit baffling.
A couple things. For one, computer monitors are HD. Just so we all know. TVs have their new fancy HD resolution, but that same resolution, along with higher, have been on computer monitors for years and years and years.
The whole lack of HD being a shame is that it's easy to implement and lots of other cameras feature it now. HD recording is becoming commonplace among companies and home video recorders alike. It's just one thing this camera can't do. There is nothing wrong with VGA itself though
so then my confusion remains. how will viewing vga shot files look different on a computer monitor? grainier? choppier? less dynamic range?
but thanks for your reply.
i'm debating between the G11, the Pentax KX and the Panny GF1. the G11 for convenience, but I'm wondering how much of a hit with IQ and depth of field it will take over the other two I mentioned.
Generally HD will be 16:9 widescreen and clearer while VGA will be 4:3 box size and a bit less detailed. I've always found HD recording a bit redundant on a camera, since the HD recordings aren't going to anywhere near as good as even a basic consumer HD camcorder. However, it is a nice extra feature.
Generally the footage would just be lower quality, but not choppier, both should be running at 30fps-ish.
All three of those cameras are quite nice for their price, it comes down to preference.
