I don't know what pickup is in his guitar, but I believe the fuzz is most likely a Zvex Fuzz Factory, I've read things about J's gear, and it seems that's what he likes to use for acoustic shows like this one.

Whatever it is, it sounds amazing.

generally J likes p-90 pickups, like you'd find in a Les Paul Jr... I think he might have a p-90 style pickup in here...

everyone can use a acoustic guitar also as an electric guitar. just plug it into a guitar amp and put some boss distortion, flanger, chorus, whatever effects between the guitar and the amp. but this acoustic guitars are modified with humbuckers/singlecoils. Kurt cobain did also use such kind of acoustic guitar modifications - you can see it in the Nirvana - MTV Unplugged show ...

but I like Dinosaur Jr. very much. they've great sounds and the solos are fantastic!
