I took apart a cordless drill today. It had plastic (or nylon I guess) gears in this configuration. It was geared down really far, had like 2 sets of these gears.
German Heinzmann (also) introduced electric hub motor with Nylon gear wheels able to handle 24Nm easily. German Rohloff Speedhub has 9 plastic rollers (propably also from Nylon) and it has 100Nm torque resistance. It's more about the noise than durability - metal gear wheels (with straight teeth) mak much more noise than Nylon. Nylon is not so durable as steel - that's right dear scientists. But "handicap" of steel is not that big. If somebody asks: "China?" than I ask: "Germany"?
@MaciejDlugosz It's not nylon, that's for sure. Even the gear wheel works pretty smooth, the friction and force applied to it during switiching the gears of the hub would cause those wheels to wear off quite quickly. Most of the time for "clockworks" applications like that they use POM (acetal) as it is far more durable and has excellent wear resistance. Moreover it's not so susceptible to temperature fluctuation which causes greater dimension changings in case of nylon.
@ermanakgun... hm-mm, my question is: Why are these gears sacrificed in the first place?
Wouldn't it be more advantageous to make all the gears of a hardened metal, sealed within the hub, greased or permanently in oil. I do not believe there are sacrificial gears in those 3,7 & 9 gear hub transmissions(manual)... so... Why the difference for these motors? Are there torque/stress issues on the motors' stator or housing frame?

I am thinking of casting the gears in epoxy adhesive (2 part A and B type). What do you think?

@Lecski
That's pretty strange - beacause I have found two sources which say about Nylon???
Check this out:
w w w [.]ebikes[.]ca/store/index[.]php (...nylon gear in eZee hub)
w w w [.]kinetics[.]org[.]uk/html/heinzmann_kits[.]shtml (... nylon gears in the Heinzmann gearbox which are quieter)

@Lecski Majority of reducers such as these do not need anything stronger than nylon. Each gear only has 1/3 of force on it.

... why nylon? And not titanium w/ same orbital gear?
even better use a mini fluid forque converter
or smooth-surface roller gearing?...

@SittingMooseShaman
In this mechanism, you must wear a small gear, because it's easier than ever to change the outer gear.

Just say "NO" to plastic.

Those gears should be changed over to steel
