  • it's just another OS, not a software app

  • I might as well just dual-boot Windows and my preferred Linux distro at that point.

  • its like ubuntu sry Xubuntu and WUbi installer. AND UBUNTU IS FREE AND DO THE SAME, :D

  • At the end when he's shutting down the computer he's just hard-shutting it down... I can do that with any computer. Just keep pressed on your hardware shutdown button for a few seconds...

Of course, this is not advised and there's a reason.

  • Actually, I have Windows Power Management configured to shutdown when the lid gets closed. No key needed!

  • That's not hard shutdown. Presto really does shutdown instantly. It does not need to save anything to disk while shutting down.

  • No he isn't, I have Presto and it is an instant shut down. Nothing to save to disk. Even if i click the menu, shut down button its instant, like a T.V.

  • What about Internet security and virus protection?

  • It uses Linux, so there is no needed.

  • isnt this software supposed to boot windows,

faster instead it becomes another dumb os,why would i give up my vista os for this unknown os,which dosent support windows software,so it dosent boot vista faster its misleading.

  • You Use Vista, GTFO.

  • @anglopakistani: ahow long have you had Vista. Depending when you bought Vista you may be eligible a new Windows 7 O/S

  • i already have windows 7. thanks.

  • A nice frugal install of puppy linux with some of the fat cut off can boot even faster, a current pupplet (modded puppy) called TurboPuppy (the extreme edition) is capable of running with less than 12 megabytes of RAM and boots in less than 8 seconds LESS! and that is for old computers, my Pentium 4 boots it in 4-5 seconds.

  • i have to say a great dualboot!!

but would it not be possible for a standalone install or presto ?

  • Presto has to be installed from inside Windows. I'm more of an Ubuntu fan, but I have to say this is pretty neat. And they made a wise choice using Xfce 4.6 as the desktop environment. It's pretty lightweight but still very functional.

Xandros probably makes enough money from sales of the Xandros-powered EeePCs and EeeBoxes and from Presto and the Presto App Store that they probably have no need to release a full desktop OS like Xandros 4. I used Xandros 3 a lot until I caught the Ubuntu bug.

  • i know presto has to be installed in wondows...i was sayin g why not make it stand alone? I never figured out why people that make OS's don't add the boot up to the end of the shut down, so that when you start your Computer your pretty much instantly at the desktop...

try Athene 4.1 instead of Ubuntu, much faster! can get 5sec boot up time.

download it from me at thepiratebay (dot) org/user/scuba-doo

and it is standalone, its pretty good!!

  • Ah, I see what you're saying now. Well, if Xandros were to feel that a standalone Presto would benefit them economic-wise, then they might. As it stands right now, I don't think Xandros would benefit in that way by making standalone OSes for the general consumer. Presto is marketed to the general consumer. I don't think they made enough money on the consumer-oriented OSes to warrant continuing making them. When you have shareholders, the shareholders always come before the consumers. :(

  • Linux does do all that for me. PlaysMPs's dvd's (and i can skip over the comercials at the front) and reenode dvd to whatever i want.. I find it very friendly

  • all i ask to be happy with linux is to play mp3s, play dvd movies, and a software to recode dvd like nero recode, nothing else. but linux is not friendly

  • Linux already does that....I was just watching "waynes world II with puppy linux

  • I'm guessing you've never heard of Ubuntu? UBUNTY FTW!

  • i was talking about ubuntu, kubuntu, whatever version you can call. i loosing my sony vaio if i install ubuntu, nothing will work not even the eject button. if you can give me a light in the path i will thank you a lot.

  • Try looking in the official Ubuntu Documentation and forums. Ask there for specific problems. You can even ask in IRS for help. Help always comes if you ask your question in the right manner. As for this - nice idea but: 1)it's commercial, 2)Linux systems usually needs such a small period of time to start. Not a big difference if it starts 10 seconds earlier. :D

    Linux forever. :P

  • Yikes!!!!! I didnt know that was even possible! faster than DSL Linux id say??? whoa! impressive!

  • SPLASHTOP RULEZZZZZ!

  • This isn't Splashtop, Einstein. It's a customized Xfce 4.6.

  • I like this, It saves me time when Im either on the go or just need to check my email really fast!

  • It's not a debian distro like ubuntu. It's a watered-down Xandros.

  • actually it is based on lenny.... you can even use the lenny repositories from presto.

  • Looks like it's a slimmed down linux installing via Wubi. I hope they offer an option to do away with Wubi.

  • Why? Xandros' desktop/laptop OSes are used by very few people. It's better economic-wise for Xandros to sell Presto - which has quite an appeal - for $19.95 than to sell a seldomly-used or seldomly-bought desktop/laptop OS for $80 each.

Now don't get me wrong, I loved Xandros 3 Deluxe and used it for about 1 1/2 years, but if Xandros is losing money on the desktop/laptop OS product but can make money on Presto, they should get out of the desktop/laptop OS market and stick with Presto.

  • why still need windows? can it do stand alone install?

  • Ubuntu <_<

  • Fedora 10 <_<

  • Kubuntu ^_^ or the lightest of them all Xbuntu!!!!

  • Debian with Icewm <_< - lightest of them all (with pretty Gui)

  • i must say... the faster linux distro out there is tinycore...boots even faster than Pre$to, xubuntu, fluxbuntu, dsl, slitaz......believe me...

  • you can do it by edit ur bootconfig in cmd. i think maybe it should work.

  • Normal windows boot menu, you can change it automatically boot whichever os you like.

  • It takes time to choose btwn Presto and Windows

I want it automatically ie. going to Presto desktop by one key stroke and to Window by two key strokes

That's time, you will be my choice
