Please check out Peter Glossop's youngest daughter's show reel on youtube - search Rosie Glossop's Showreel - He was very proud of her voice and sadly missed out on her performances but he would be encouraging her now if he were here with us today! Rosie is now trying to find a good agent so if anyone reading has any contacts please get in touch and help Rosie to follow in her father's footsteps! Thanks ;-)
It is a disgrace that Peter Glossop and the tenor Charles Craig were never properly recognised by the so -called Establishment. They both had voices of great character combined with a sure sense of humanity.
"'Do you want to know who the greatest Verdi baritone this country has ever produced is? Peter Glossop."
Sir Thomas Allen
Said to me in a masterclass some years ago now. Listening to this video I can see why! And yes, your father should have been knighted just like the late and very great Philip Langridge and Anthony Rolfe Jonhson. However, the memories of their performances and the recordings we still treasure are a legacy most of us mortals can only dream of aspiring to.
Sad Amber, Thank you for putting up this wonderful tribute to your Dad. What a beautiful legacy you have in recordings of such a wonderful singer andof course YOUR DAD.
Tommy I so strongly agree with you - I wonder if I could get some sort of honour for him even though he's no longer with us? If anyone knows please let me know...
Voci come la sua non esistono piu . Avevo la fortuna di ascoltarlo all'inizio della sua carriera, era un grande atrista e aveva una bellissima voce Verdiana . Sublime ,grazie per questo caro ricordo .
I just loved to hear Peter Glossop sing. If I remember correctely, I once had a record of Peter Glossop and June Bronhill singing Merry England, I would love to get my hands on another copy.
Your father was indeed a great singer with a terrific stage presence. I saw him several times at the ROH and he was always wonderful. Thank you for posting this great memory of him.
Even if his own country never gave him the honors he truly deserved, the opera world knows very well where is place was in the history of true baritone voices : Right in the very first line ! Next to Bruson, Merrill, Bastianini, Warren, Nucci etc..
His renditions of Rigoletto and Germont were outstanding.
My gosh, he gives so much personality in his singing. Mr Glossop is the only singer who has given me goosebumps in the way that Pavarotti has. The ability to bring out emotions in me that I never knew I had.
He had such a glorious voice!
One of the few singers that makes me proud to be British!
I too go back to my days 'in the gods' at covent garden, Iago was peters best role for me. I still resent the attitude of our musical establishment to our native singers, it does not change to this day. Remember Lord Harwoods stupid comment in opera mag. re 'what a beautiful voice, a pity he cannot sing
I have only just caught up with this thread. Your father was a great favourite of mine and as one whose early opera going was at Covent Garden in the 'seventies and 'eighties played an integral part in my growing to love the art form. He was my first Rigoletto and to this day I have never heard or seen him bettered in the part. A wonderful actor and a superb singer with a beautiful, big warm Italianate voice. You must be very proud. My very best to you and your family.
It's quite wonderful: the pictures are tender, amusing, moving... and the singing is masterly, really Peter Glossop was one of the greatest Verdi-baritones, a real "son of Italy", as He liked to be considered!
What a GREAT voice, color, amplitude, extension, expression. I had known about Mr. Glossop for more than a decade but had never heard him.. What a discovery. Wonderful tribute.
Dear Amber, thank you very much for this tribute. Just one week ago a friend told me about that Peter died. I am very, very sorry about your and our lost. He was really one of the very best baritones (in my opinion) and for you and your sister I think he was a very good dad. I still have negatives we never made photos from and when your are interested I will scan them for you but it will take a bit time. Just drop me a line.
All the very best for you and my thoughts are with you. Wolfgang.
Hi Wolgang - thanks so much for your message - my mum will be so pleased that you got in touch! It is still very hard of course and I miss him every day. Photo's would be lovely! xx
Hi Amber,I'm so sorry about your lost, my father also past away, 2 months ago and I miss him so much. if this helps I just want to say that time will cures our hearts and he will be always with you, in you heart.
sometiems I feel like I have him as an angel taking care of us.
Amber, what a beautiful tribute! Thank you so much for posting it. Your father was a very early inspiration of my own move into professional singing, and I think a very underappreciated artist to those of my generation. His recording of Billy Budd is still my single favourite, if I had to choose one. I am deeply sorry to hear of his passing.
Many thanks and "here here" to him never being recognised by his own country - shocking that such a great artist was never honoured by his country that he was proud to represent! Thankfully his fans somehow make up for that! Many thanks for your post and best wishes for your singing career!
Hey Amber, is there any way u can share with us a recording with his greatest hits? is there any available? i just can find complete operas, wich i have many, but tehres some recordings, like traviata or tosca id love to have. Thx!
Thank you Amber for this touching tribute. I was so sorry to read of your Dads death. I immediately played his recording of Merrie England - his Essex is so full of life and character, and it was with this performance that I first heard his voice - indeed he was a true Yeoman of England!!
Thank you, Amber!! This is his most touching video I've ever seen here. And this is the first time that I can listen to his "Di provenza il mar, ilsuol".
Thank you. Amber, for this revelatory tribute. I hope it will be seen by those in our own country who could not recognize a great artist with an international career that few British singer have matched. The perceptive audiences of Italy and the US knew what this meant - to take the stage and hold thousands spellbound -no mike, no cameras, facing that darkness of a huge theatre. A truly great artist - we must not forget him
Peter Glossop's autobiography is honest, sensitive, self-perceptive and insightful, qualities which pervaded his singing.
