@Cr1msonKing if i remember well, these drums are called bara...
Its made of a calabash/a gourd with goat skin on it... Quite specific to Burkina Faso (or at least to mandingo music)...
its made of the same fruit than the resonator under the keys on the balafon...
I find it great to play with bala, its not to loud beside it...

Those are gourds. They act as resonators to increase the volume.
