While I agree the pilots were careless, I don't know why you repeated them saying they want the best shot. Televisions stations operate on advertising revenue which is related to the ratings. The better the ratings, the more they can charge for an ad (and that also means cable news can charge more per subscriber). Unless you want to pay their bills, you have to accept the fact that ratings will be a deciding factor in everything they do.

I have worked with two different helicopter companies and have been in the air many times. I have watched the pilots and It is difficult just to fly the helicopter let alone chase a dumb idiot across town, talk into the camera and watch out for other helicopters. While your trying to get your best shot your putting yourselves in harms way and the people on the ground. Once your 1,000 feet above ground you are responsible for keeping a watchful eye out.
I agree, what happened in the air had to do with protocol. Seems like a no brainer when you have as many as 5 helicopters (including police helicopters) following a chase they should each have an assigned altitude to prevent an obvious accident waiting to happen.

Helicopters are probably the most sophisticated flying machines on the planet. In fact when you consider how complex they are it's amazing that they can fly at all. Add to that that they are inherently unstable and very difficult to control and it's a no brainer that their pilots should be prohibited from doing anything but concentrating on flying the aircraft in a safe manner.
In America many states now have laws against talking on cell phones or doing anything distracting while operating a car and all states have laws against driving while intoxicated. Why? Because these things interfere with our ability to operate the car and could endanger our lives and the lives of people around us. Now cars can only go forward, backward, left, or right and have fairly simple controls, basically just a steering wheel, brake, and gas pedal.
@Sm00thOp3r8or the driver of a car only has to pay attention to what is in front of them, behind them, and to the left or right of them when making a turn or changing lanes.
Helicopters, on the other hand can go forward, backward, left, right, up, down, and side to side. This means that a helicopter pilot has to be paying attention to everything that is going on around them in a 360 degree sphere.
@Sm00thOp3r8or Add to that the fact that helicopters have a very sophisticated set of controls that can behave differently depending on the surrounding conditions and it becomes even more important that the helicopter pilot not be distracted by multitasking.
Clearly both of these helis (and in my opinion all news helis) should have a separate reporter on board to allow the pilot to solely concentrate on flying the aircraft safely.

Not really. It was ruled pilot error by the FAA. The pilots lost track of each other. And before you go off on a rant about police chasing suspects, you should look at department policy. Phoenix can only pursuit suspects who have committed a violent felony.

Again as a commercially trained helicopter pilot and rated fixed winger...I agree. The pilot in command of his aircraft is fully responsible for the safe operation of his aircraft and reserves the right to deviate and take any action necessary to ensure a safe flight. What is happening on the ground has absolutely nothing to do with flight operations. They failed miserably.

Sounds like in chase situations like that, they should have another aircraft flying higher & providing control instructions, kind of like the FACs in Vietnam.
As a fellow pilot my self i agree with frankt1113 is the pilots SOLE resoponsabilty to pilot his craft and its the law that says that you can look it up in the FAR/AIM manuel you study to become a pilot so any charges that are brought against the guy on the ground are stupid yes he should have not run but the choppers should have been whatching where they were going too.
