Joni came from a intact family with money but she gave up her child because she was diving headlong into a music career that was begining to gain alot of attention. Joni claims that she was a starving artist. I love Joni's music totally but she really has a hard edge as a person.
What I would like to know is this. What does it feel like when one finds out that your mother is Joni Mitchell? It had to be an amazing revelation. I would be so proud to know that she was my mother.
the big difference between joni and a good parent is this...if my kid fucks up..i'm always there for them rain or shine...i dont care how old your kids get..they will always be your children
but with joni..she sees you every 35 years and if you get out of line she socks you in the face...
now i realize it was best that joni didnt keep her daughter..and never had more kids
she could have had more kids when she hit 30, 35...she was rich..but she has NO MATERNAL INSTINCT OR INTEREST
i removed my old reply. I wasnt happy with it. I shoulda said it better , like this
""Theres no great crime in having no maternal interest. You could say it takes a person who is the very OPPOSITE of selfish, to give up a child."" Thats looking out for a childs best interest, TOO.""
She had a great gift to offer the world. It wasnt her fault that at the time, she wasnt able to do BOTH.
Sheesh - some of you people need to read up on social history and talk to some elderly people about what used to happen in the good old days to young unmarried girls and women who weren't married.
As an adoptee who met his birth mother, I understand and feelings of ALL parties. An adoptee has 2 sets of parent , Birth AND Adoptive. The adoptee is not a complete person without BOTH sets. Reunions with birth parents cannot and should not replace the Adoptive parents contributions. I rejoice with Joni and her daughter in their reunion.
I love Joni Mitchell-But, as an adoptive father this is pure BS. I certainly don't fault Joni, however, she is the biological mom, the REAL Mom & Dad are the adoptive parents. They raised her, they suffered with her, they took the responsibility. Joni did the right thing for her daughter at the time. But to negate, not even mention the parents and to try and set up Joni as a mom & grandma, without any regard to the parents that raised"Kelly" is irresponsible. This is a fluff piece.
Rather than discard my own blood & flesh to the tender mercies of some "better" family, I'd live with them in a van and school them myself. The damage done by being abandoned (yes) by your parents can NEVER be repaired....Giving up your child because of "the social climate" (read: "what my family or the neighbors will think?") is weak, and unforgivable. There's no excuse. Period.
Her daughter looks a lot like Joni's mother. Sometimes, looks skip a generation. I look more like my mother's mother than I do my mother. That's Joni's mother at 2:04, coming out of the door. This is video taken at her mom and dad's home in Saskatoon. Very middle-class, as you can see.
If you look on CBC's site, you can find a photo and a video of her mom and dad. You'll be able to see her mom's resemblance to Kilauren.
Just think how much sad drained out of our beautiful bird.I got a girl pregnant when we were 16.She had an abortion.I still lash myself.I hold that sin up to the light it hurts still after 37 years
@jussaguy1 ....I know this all too well. The real human condition is a checker-board of colors, and some are dark. I feel for you, as only one who was there can. I, as it seems you do too, look over my shoulder. I balance random acts of kindness with fits of blinding rage...only to hate myself for having lost my path those many years ago. Seeing "Joni" make peace is wonderful.....I hope you and I can find the same. But for now...I can only hope. Take care.
i had a sister who i always thought was kind of dumb. Then she got pregnant and gave the child up for adoption, i realized in an instance that she was brilliant. we love u joni
God bless Joni for allowing that child to live and have a home instead of aborting the innocent baby in her womb. Look at her wonderful daughter and see yet another argument against the evil of abortion.
@SuperC888 That was my thought too. Her Dad's probably dead. . . .or wishes he was. Chuck Mitchell (Joni's husband who married her and her daughter) I think died some time ago. So, maybe there aren't any associated men alive to be in this story.
I am adopted and have known so my whole life. I was a huge Joni Mitchell fan at the tender age of 17. I am now 46 and can't hear " Little Green" without a few tears falling. I didn't know about her daughter until this moment and now realise why the song is so powerful for me.
The guy who said Joni's love was "a real altruistic love" doesn't understand the real evil of altruism that hides within an act of it. Altruism has nothing to do with love or kindness or goodwill or respect for others. It's basic absolute is self-sacrifice which means: the self as a standard of evil, the selfless as the standard of good. A scam, it ignores one's right to exist without self-sacrifice. It is actually the opposite of freely loving someone simply because you freely love them.
Thank you to those who are willing to say, my dear daughter was given to me by God when someone loved them enough to give them up for adopt ion. You are the parents who are the parents, but someone loved them enough to give them a life with you. Thank you so very much. Bless you.Praise God for you dear parents.
I have met, recorded with and am close friends with a lot of names in the business. It all means nothing and they are just people. However, When I met Joni at the Daily Grille in Studio City, CA in 2000 by chance it was the one and only time in my entire life as a musician and as a person that I was completely AWESTRUCK and overcome. Her greatness and kindness left me speechless. We sat for a few min, had a smoke and talked. It will always be one of the greatest memories in my 51 years.
Joni receives a lot of slack for givng up her daughter, and rightly so, but in her defense, at least she gave her daughter life and didn't abort her. That's more than can be said for people nowadays.
@rory8585 - You apparently know nothing about the social climate of the time when Joni Mitchell was pregnant out of wedlock. She deserves no flack for that. Being an unmarried mother or the child of such a situation was a recipe for instant disaster for both mother and child at that time. You have NO idea! It was a good thing to give her daughter a father and mother at the time - it was an act of love doing that for her daughter.
Yep, she couldnt keep her baby because of all the judgmental assholes back then. Luckily things have changed, women dont have to give up their kids just because theyre not married. Joni REALLY hates these rightwad pompous types, she's always assailed em in her music. GO JONI!
@Hexl702 you said " she couldnt keep her baby because of all the judgmental assholes back then" back when? The fucking stone age? you are out of context, and please prove your statement for the musical hero you have in your mind that is obscuring basic facts. She's a selfish bitch. So she hates "right wing pompus" types yet she uses her pomp and politics to advance her status? It's not all about 'art' sorry to say. She had a keen conscious then..don't get it mixed up with your family.
@zephyrquartz Rather than discard my own blood & flesh to the tender mercies of some "better" family, I'd live with them in a van and school them myself. The damage done by being abandoned (yes) by your parents can NEVER be repaired....Giving up your child because of "the social climate" (read: "what my family or the neighbors will think?") is weak, and unforgivable. There's no excuse. Period.
@zephyrquartz what exactly are you defending? The right to have yourself impregnated, but not following through on the next course of responsible action? You gave up kids too, out of your own hedonism? It's no secret J.Mitchell is hedoinistic and she was very keen and aware of her actions, just listen and watch her at 16 . No sucker, yet she still chose to be selfish. You have to seperate the 'music hero' from reality. She's no better and she's lucky her Daughter connected.
@oatstao Can we please judge some more. I mean, I walked out the door today, and I though, damn, there's just a shortage of judgmental pricks in the world. I mean, Jesus, where are all the strong, Christiun, judgmental men who walk with Jesus? Where! ARE! They!?
@oatstao - It is pretty obvious that you don't know what you're talking about and weren't alive at the time Joni Mitchell gave up her child for adoption. And if you were, then you must have gone around with a blindfold on and ear plugs and a closed heart. I'm defending no one. I just commented on what happened to young women back then...which did not happen to me.
@zephyrquartz it's pretty obvious you should concentrate on your own family, not some hero you hold up to some sort of standard that is obscured by your emotions.
YOu have no clue how to apply it to myself, as you don't know me, so if you want to really talk about social patterns and demographics in history, we can..until then don't be sweeping judgement about me or Joni. It's no secret she let go of the child, for the sake of her career. Her fucking selfish side. The Witch she is.
@oatstao - I'm really amazed at the venom here. I do not have a hero and certainly Joni Mitchell is not a hero of mine. I just like some of her songs - not even all of them! I am not judging anyone - but only responding to what I consider rather strange venom being sent out about the plight of an unmarried woman in the 60s and this obviously tormented artist when I very much doubt that the people commenting know her or what she did as a young woman - or why.
@zephyrquartz If there were therapy that might help you, I'd say get some. I'm not sure there is therapy for the kind of judgmentalism and self-righteousness you exhibit. You are frightening.
@sheilalong1 - Therapy? I think if you think I'm being judgemental and self-righteous, then you have blinkers on. I have been responding to very judgemental people on this topic. I have a strong opinion, that's all. Actually I don't care what people think about Joni Mitchell one way or the other, or unmarried mothers who give up their children for adoption. I find the closed-mindedness of many people staggering, that's all.
@zephyrquartz ":"act of love", my ass. There are several reasons for choosing NOT to hand off your own flesh and blood ...Try these"...."character"....."duty"'..."common decency"....Call it what you will....I'd rather live in a cardboard box by the river with my kids than give em away..I''D READ TO THEM...FEND FOR THEM , FEED THEM...die for them IF NECESSARY....all this...: NO-MATTER-WHAT-SOCIETY-SAID. Get it? ..No excuse you can give is acceptable to your abandoned child, I can promise you.
@rastablues1 - Where are you getting your quotes? They are not from me. I try not to judge others but applaud you for being so upright yourself. 'Judge not, lest ye also be judged,' one rather well-known famous person said.
@zephyrquartz "not from me"" LOL!! Lying..backpeddling....what a surprise...it's what meddlers do best ..it's a self-preservation thing, huh?
I suggest you look about 8 inches up the page at your reply to "rory8585"..Jog your memory any ? Now, unless YOU'RE adopted, and can speak to the actual experience, stop making excuses for the weak "take-my-kid-please" crowd, and please, fuck off.
Her daughters voice is so eerily similar - and they met while she was painting... It's in the genes they say. But what about a probable stepmother, then? Hope she's not excluded from all that, as she spent her life on properly raising such a nice young lady...
What is the story here? Did Mitchell give the child up for adoption for business reasons? And did Mitchell initiate the search, or did the child go searching for her?
@cracks21229 - Young girls who got pregnant back then were generally 'encouraged' (if not forced) to give up their babies if they weren't married. The social ostracism was extreme, which also affected whether one could survive...to get a job, for example.
@zephyrquartz Let's all take a breath here. If I remember correctly,Joni asked for temporary help from Social Services to place her daughter in Foster Care because she couldn't feed her or provide a home for her.. Multiplied by the fact that Joni's parents wouldn't support her decision in making a living with her music, informed Social Services that she was an unfit mother. It was a losing battle. She was alone. Nothing is as we think. Yesterday is gone. I'll pray for healing for them today.
@Hexl702 It still hadn't changed that much by '69. I had my first daughter in '71, and believe me,society was still not welcoming me with open arms. It was hard, very hard, and I had to deal with prejudice and harsh judgement on a daily basis.
Thats not how I heard it - Her folks said they wouldve helped her. But Joni never told her parents. Not out of any shame on her part , but because of the bullshit her parents wouldve been subjected to, courtesy of the
Arch Assholes prevalent in society at the time. They wouldve made life
To that final comment in the film clip, I don't think it was in a "weird way" that her work may have felt completed. I think it must be readily apparent how work, play, love, laughter, sadness, all of it, fit together in a body of work that Shakespeare referred to when he wrote "what a piece of work is man". When the news of this came out I felt elated for this woman who had so readilly bared her soul to her listeners and wondered how much of this chapter was there embedded in her work.
@Scottf929 My understanding of the situation, was that Joni named her daughter "Kelly" before she gave her up for adoption. So, it makes total sense--kelly green, little green..
@smexxiboi55 Please do not pay any attention to these awful trolls! If nothing else, you now see what the price is for being in the "spotlight" and having fools and idiots make accusations and assumptions about you. And yes, "They don't even know you"!
Ignore them! They are ultimately jealous and want your energy and attention. "Don't give it to them"! They are NEVER worth it! Stay strong and sane. ;)
Just heard (again) the description of Charlie Gilmour, Cenotaph-climbing student protester, as 'David Gilmour's adopted' son, BBCradio2 news, maybe other bulletins too) and I am still baffled as to why the fact of his adoption is considered an issue and a factor worth highlighting. Is he in some way defined or different by being adopted? Like having red hair in the UK, is being adopted considered weird and worthy of pointing at? This may or may not make sense to non-adopted people.
I'm adopted and I met my mother for the first time a few years ago. It did not work out as well as things did for Joni and her daughter. Now the fantasy of who my mother is is gone, but I guess I had to know. Ah well, that's life!
@tempelton in the book, Girls Like Us, there is a chapter about joni and some excerpts that joni and her daughter had some rough episodes as well. i guess its universal, that happened to me too when i was reunited with my kids. i guess life is not perfect.
this is a real gloss over the difficulty of what the reality was The daughter was involved with a coke addict and there were violent scenes between the daughter and Joni (I think Joni slapped her and they didnt speak for months)
Who knows what the situation is now - the fact that Mitchell doesnt mention the daughter publicly recently could be indicative of something - I sometimes think adoptive reunions are a dubious idea
certainly it didnt pan out like the "Masterclass Of Love" painted here
@turquoise770 - The "baby daddy" is Brad McGrath, who is now a photographer in Toronto. Irony of ironies, he lives not far from Kilauren, Joni's, and his, daughter.
Well that was all a bit existential! Very entertaining though and... somehow theological - capital letters for Music and Lyrics certainly add a certain celestial shimmer. So "Be IT" indeed.

Oh let's all praise Joni Mitchelle and kiss her butt even though she had a child out of wedlock and abandoned it for all of its childhood... Give me a break

You are frightening.
sheilalong1 1 month ago
@sheilalong1 - Therapy? I think if you think I'm being judgemental and self-righteous, then you have blinkers on. I have been responding to very judgemental people on this topic. I have a strong opinion, that's all. Actually I don't care what people think about Joni Mitchell one way or the other, or unmarried mothers who give up their children for adoption. I find the closed-mindedness of many people staggering, that's all.

If you get an abortion, the self righteous pricks call you a slut and a murderer.
If you go through with the pregnancy and give birth, they call you a slut, a whore and the baby a bastard.
Lovely people, arent they. Jesus would bitch slap em -- if he could get his arms
off the crossbeam.

@rastablues1 - Where are you getting your quotes? They are not from me. I try not to judge others but applaud you for being so upright yourself. 'Judge not, lest ye also be judged,' one rather well-known famous person said.

@zephyrquartz "not from me"" LOL!! Lying..backpeddling....what a surprise...it's what meddlers do best ..it's a self-preservation thing, huh?

And did Mitchell initiate the search, or did the child go searching for her?
cracks21229 6 months ago
@cracks21229 - Young girls who got pregnant back then were generally 'encouraged' (if not forced) to give up their babies if they weren't married. The social ostracism was extreme, which also affected whether one could survive...to get a job, for example.
zephyrquartz 1 month ago
@zephyrquartz Let's all take a breath here. If I remember correctly,Joni asked for temporary help from Social Services to place her daughter in Foster Care because she couldn't feed her or provide a home for her.. Multiplied by the fact that Joni's parents wouldn't support her decision in making a living with her music, informed Social Services that she was an unfit mother. It was a losing battle. She was alone. Nothing is as we think. Yesterday is gone. I'll pray for healing for them today.

Damn, if it had only been five years later, around 1969, she coulda had her baby and kept her as a single mother. By then women were telling
the self righteous assholes to go screw themselves.
Hexl702 1 month ago 2
@Hexl702 It still hadn't changed that much by '69. I had my first daughter in '71, and believe me,society was still not welcoming me with open arms. It was hard, very hard, and I had to deal with prejudice and harsh judgement on a daily basis.

But theyre not getting away with it anymore. Theyre bitching because its not an automatic attitude anymore. Women dont have to take this crap.
Hexl702 2 weeks ago
@HollowShackHS
Thats not how I heard it - Her folks said they wouldve helped her. But Joni never told her parents. Not out of any shame on her part , but because of the bullshit her parents wouldve been subjected to, courtesy of the
Arch Assholes prevalent in society at the time. They wouldve made life
intolerable for her folks, too, and the child.

What a wonderful story.
eleanorayoulateagain 1 year ago
this is a real gloss over the difficulty of what the reality was The daughter was involved with a coke addict and there were violent scenes between the daughter and Joni (I think Joni slapped her and they didnt speak for months)
Who knows what the situation is now - the fact that Mitchell doesnt mention the daughter publicly recently could be indicative of something - I sometimes think adoptive reunions are a dubious idea
certainly it didnt pan out like the "Masterclass Of Love" painted here

Here's the "Deal" with Joni Mitchell
-Her Music and Lyrics are Intensely Personal--
Thus Intensely Personal People Can Gyrate To Her Beat and Weep Over Her Incredible Ourpourings that are -- intensely persional and autobiographical...
Extremely well crafted poetry and imagry hellp her depict, thus they serve her greatly---it flows...

Well that was all a bit existential! Very entertaining though and... somehow theological - capital letters for Music and Lyrics certainly add a certain celestial shimmer. So "Be IT" indeed.
