Varnish refers to passenger trains, although it probably does not really apply to modern trains. Most likely comes from the much older, wooden passenger cars.
Actually, there are two locomotives--the first is a GP40-2, the unit behind it is a steam generator car, formerly an Alco PB1 (no tractive effort). The third unit is an F9B.
I just love how the DRGW was so stubborn bout giving its passenger service to Amtrak. Thats the way to roll, the Rio Grande way:)
