I was fishing at a lake where some campers packed up and left their site, and I heard loud BOOOM! On examination of the scene it was a can of beans left under the coals that exploded, sending shrapnel and burnt beans out, almost starting a forest fire.
these guys took safty too far. a bullett needs the barrel of a gun to create enough preasure for the bullet to go straight and with a straight flight path. otherwise, you may get the bullet flying out, but it will just flop through the air
You're basically getting what's called an "out of battery explosion". That happens when you eject a hang fire (slow burning primer, doesn't ignite the gunpowder) and it explodes outside of the chamber of the weapon.
Sure, the shrapnel is what messes you up in this case, but an OOB explosion has the hot gases exploding right next to you. There's a picture floating around of a guy who had a .50BMG OOB explode next to his hand and all I can say is it's not pretty.
@minibikerider1 ooh, so that's why my cousin died. the bullet in an open fire (6mm) penetrated his eye, and hit his brain. he died... I guess that's the same as... LETHAL
@nhonings unless a bullet is in a chamber, when they go off the energy isn't forced in one general direction so the bullet would just bounce or flip and roll. So i call bullshit. It wasn't the bullet that killed your cousin, it was 2% shrapnel, 98% absolute fucking stupidity for putting a bullet in a fire.
-sigh- Do i even have to ask? Are people in this world so stupid that putting live rounds into a fire is a good idea to them? Really? We humans will really be the end of ourselves.
@Metadragon142 No, we won't ALL be the end of ourselves. Thankfully, when those that DO end themselves in such a manner occur, we have a word for that.
lol... next thing you know mythbusters is going to get sued bc they didn't expressly say don't put ammo in a fire and some dipshit is going to do it for fun.
they really over-engineered this. They could have easily designed a 1m "slippery slide" that finished in the fire. Pull a string, which knocks a bucket full of bullets into the fire.
Newton's third law states that for every action (force) there is an equal and opposite reaction. In a gun, the bullet fires just the same as in the campfire. The difference being the gun has mass the reaction is hitting against. The bullet has less mass than the gun, therefore the gun stays in place and the bullet flies out. To set off a round by itself, the bullet part has more mass than the casing, therefore the bullet, just like the gun, stays and the lighter weight casing goes flying.
@filoIII have you ever heard of recoil? this is when the gun is moving and why ppl get knocked over by shotguns, trust me, it dont stay still, 250 12 gauge shells and around 150 7.62s will tell you that
I get a kick out of how us 'amateurs' have enough sense in our post to describe the item of focus here a 'shell", a 'round", or a 'cartridge' among others, but the 'pros' after all their experience continue to call the item of focus a 'bullet'. I wish someone would tell these pros that a bullet is nothing more than a chunck of lead often encased in copper. Oh well, at least we know the difference. yuk yuk
To all of you that are making comments about using shotgun shells, heres some food for thought.
Rifle and pistol ammo is in a brass or steel casing with a slug on the end sealing it. Shotguns shells are 99.9% of the time made of soft plastic with just the plastic casing itself covering the sabot. The shotgun shells would do the same thing as these with one exception, the expanding gas does not have to work as hard to rupture the caseing. So your theory that a shotgun shell would do more is wrong
When I was in Iraq we had a controlled munitions burn along with a bunch of other equipment we needed to "de-mil" and I can tell you this there were some tracer rounds that fired off from a sunk in 20ft deep pit that could have been deadly, even EOD said it could be so we were at least 1000 ft. away.
we used to throw them in empty beer cans and then put them in the fire, it was always the casing that shot out and they didn't hurt at all, just surprising during a huge party around the bonfire is all
2:15 Foil dinners! We made them back in Boy Scouts all the time! They taste really good! You can also hard boil an egg in a wax cup right on the coals. Another thing we did was a brown paper bag dinner. Put eggs, & bacon right in the bag (I forget in what order) & you can place that on the coals & the grease prevents the bottom of the bag from burning...more or less. My brother's dinner bag caught on fire. I think the sides did. It was hilarious when he yanked it off the fire & stomped it out!
South african minister of foreign affairs Pik Botha did this for real during a hike with all the ministers & the president.
The next day the minister of defense tricked Pik into beliving that a stray bullet had killed a guard and only revealed it later when pik started to write his letter of resignation.
i was camping one time and cleaning out my dads truck and threw out an old box of shotgun shells that was empty....but instead of shotgun shells i had a couple of 22 shorts in there from when my 22 bullet box broke while hunting. they defiantly go BANG because we were at a public campsite and the workers there came down a few minutes later looking for our fireworks. they were pissed
I think the bullets on a campfire are potentialy fatal. Even though being hit by the casings may not kill you, I think you may get internal injuries that could be potentialy fatal.
Thats so fucking stupid, everytime they use a round its a fucking magnum. 22 MAG, .44 MAG, and .50 MAG. The biggest round you can get. Most people storing ammo have LR's or L's
It boils down to case thickness, and rimfire,or centerfire, then u can get a little more interesting with casing (steel or brass) and primer (berdan or boxer ) -alot of variables.
They already tested this under more controled conditions. To see if it was safe for firefighters to enter a burning store with ammunition on the shelfs.
Thy used cronographs set up all around, and ignited the rounds with a propane torch. The fastest fragment was a primer cup that blew out, which weiged 1.5grains at 200 feet per second. Now to compair most paintball guns and airsoft toys fire 400 feet per second. If you have eye protection its not a danger to you.
