@koalaKingsly Yeah! :D Just got back from my chemistry exams.. It went well! It's my best subject and I like it the most. I'm also having plans to make me some gunpowder at home ;) Fairly do-able. KNO3 made out of fertiliser and KCl, both obtainable in stores, charcoal (just burn a log) and sublimed sulphur, you can get that at your nearest pharmacy/well-being store. =D *boom*

@Maxjeee11 A man after my own heart! Congratulations on loving and being so good at chemistry. Just a quick note on your charcoal-by-burning-a-log idea: you know you have to heat/burn that wood in the absence of oxygen in order to produce charcoal, right? Other words a "retort."

You prob'ly already have your own plans for this--but if not lemme know.

Coincidentally I just cooked up a batch of charcoal this week in anticipation of amerika's big holiday, the 4th of July. I use balsa wood.

But if you burn a log, which consists mostly of C-H-O connections (is that the right word?) and logs don't have a complete burning like ever, so also pure C, charcoal will come into being by that reaction isn't it? @Maxjeee11 um you need to make pyrotechnics charcoal normal ash doesn't work. you need a empty metal paint bucket which they sell at ace hardware and then you need to poke three holes in the lid fill the bucket with wood chips (make sure there small or this will take forever) lastly seal the bucket and put it in a fire.smoke will begin to come out these holes i suggest setting the smoke on fire.when the (smoke/fire) (stops/goes out) pull the bucket out . now you have pyrotechnics grade charcoal.

@koalaKingsly well actually that would make black powder, not gun powder. Black powder is not a progressive burning powder. That means that the burning rate does not increase with an increase in pressure. The result is a quicker rise to maximum pressure but that maximum pressure is considerably lower than that achieved by smokeless powders.

@koalaKingsly surely copper would merely colour the flame green/blue? the green in the smoke is due to the airborne particles in the smoke, matching the volume of the gasses and water vapour given off by the mixture, to achieve the colour in the smoke organic dies and some synthetic dies are added in ratio to the mixture post production?

Its a nice smoke bomb none the less, did you cook it up? or just use powdered KNO3 and sugar?
