@originallove911 The music is a piece of master work. Here is not the place for you to deny the horrible history and brutal acts of Japanese soldiers during WW2.
A very nice montage showing David Bowie's ability, not only as a musician, but also as a buffer between cultures. Softening the harsh impact of Eastern society on our own after we had been fed so much hate-ridden propaganda after the war. I believe this film made a huge difference on the way western society perceived Eastern culture post-war.
This brings back all of my teenage angst and memories of lying on my bedroom floor with 2 speakers either side of my head with the music so loud and tears rolling down my face! Absolutely a beautiful and moving piece of music - thankyou David and Ryiuichi x
I saw this film when it first came out and it has remained indelibly imprinted on my memory. When it ended I didn't want to leave the theater. The music went on for some time and it was so beautiful.
Sweet, elegant, strugglin'.. perfect song. And after all not so 'pop' in the arrangement though perfectly enjoyable with no skills. I covered this since a long ago..

I'm Australian and my Grandfather fought against the Japanese as an infantaryman in the 2/48 Btn AIF. It was a great joy that we were able to share this beautiful film together. He said it helped him to understand the enemy he fought so long ago and in the end I saw a tear roll down his cheek, it is a memory I will cherish forever. This is truly a great film. May the dead of both sides rest in peace.
très émouvant de voir qu'un film peut avoir le pouvoir d'ouvrir les esprits.... et que les hommes malgré des combats, des violences terribles, peuvent finir par se comprendre...
i liked your comments, i also love this film. does make you think? hope you and all of your family are doing well? i am from england, my dad was a submariner, in the navy, but too young when the 2nd w,w. started, but our family did spend a couple of years in "Manly" back in the 60's but i was only about 2ish x
@ss3cleric Sorry, but only the Japanese bayoneted little babies during WWII and none of the other combatants did such monstrous acts. No forgiveness from me.
My dearly loved grandfather was a Major in the Royal Artiliary and fought in Burma. He said that he saw some terrible things.Although he never actually put things into plain words. But even amongst the carnage he clearly loved the world around us and as a kid told me about the wild life and the different people he had met during his service. It was only as he grew old and as I grew older that he opened up a bit more.
He was a grand old gent and he would have liked this film.
@Thetrollmaster2000 you sound like a typical cock-head that this media tends to attract unfortunately. How many wars have you fought in you arrogant prick? Its morons like you that need to be castrated at birth so you do not infect the rest of the world with your vile opinions. May I politely ask to you get fucked and die
If you look into history, even the United States does this. If you look into the history of the Vietnam War, our involvement with the Phillipines, and even the Internment camp, these incredulous acts are reflected in each and every one of us.
Evil, like Good, is indiscriminate in who it attempts to influence. It is the the free will of the person to accept it or cast it away.
@Superssam87: what Japanese army is bestial, but it's nothing different from what German people, Italian people and even British people did (let's ask Australian aboriginals about or Kenya natives). the naked truth is that during wars, civil wars and invasions human beings show their worst side, their destructive power and this will go on until we'll be able to live without oppressing each other (but it seems we are not going to learn this) my empathy is for the victims, wherever and whenever
@mistdragonfly Sadly, some of these men fight not to kill but to live for they know if they don't fire first. Their life will end by another men. In a way, War is a fight between politics with in countries, yet the ones who suffer and die are the innocent men trying to protect and live.
@mistdragonfly Some of what you say is Very true an that is a fact sadly of life, but don't forget 'some' people an armys did Worse then others. Look up the Rape of Nanking, the POWs camps the young girls forced into sex slavery who were Raped by 80 plus soldiers of the barracks daily. An let's not forget the log factorys (they called them logs) where the locals (occupied lands) were in were used in experiments NONE survived. YH my empathy is for the victims, wherever and whenever!!.
As I think, your feeling's the misery and happiness of each other on troops. As for Britain in this movie in fact, never taken prisoner. Respectable civil on Japan, too.
And Forbidden Colours means in Japanese by MISHIMA Yukio, the passion of loving and feeling that men meets each other, in that colors. The background is Emperor's color. So,they could not take the Emperor's suits.
i have a question, and i hope someone can answer me. there´s a scene were lt. Ito tells jack celliers, ´´ can you guess, what iám thinking? after he says that jack celliers reply saying, yes i think so, can you? and then lt. Ito punches jack celliers. so why does the japanese punched jack celliers?
Strangely, I can sympathise with the Japanese detestation of prisoners of war in WW2. Yes, I am humanitarian but, in war, it is surely right that you should die in battle rather than hang around in a camp for an indefinite period doing manual labour for your enemy.
Your lack of empathy astounds me. What the Japanese did to the allied forces (and china) was unimaginable. 12 year old girls raped by 30 men before being shot in front of her mother. Fathers, mothers, sisters, brothers, daughters beheaded, shot, raped indiscriminatly. Today, while japanese views have definatly changed, we should never forget, and I will never understand why the did these horribl acts.
I have been to singapore several times and have worked with the singaporian army several times (have you done your time yet?). I am glad the majority of your country do not share your views.
cobs1130, I think your condescension Supersam87 & mocking him for his Chinese nationality is totally unnessasary & in bad taste. It IS true the Jap imperial Army commited many, many unforgivable artocities in China, fr the Rape of Nanking to the infamous Unit 731 where prisoners were were 'experimented' on via vivisection, cutting & biological germfare, often while alive & without anesthetic. If you are unmoved by all these, then get your heart checked, will you?
You know very well in yr heart why I've said what I've said. and no, I'm not Supersam, you're so paranoid, you failed to notice the difference in our writing styles. All I want to say to you is : Sakamoto, an actual Japanese, has more heart and soul than you. For shame..oh wait, I forgot, shame is something you don't feel...so i take it back. Enjoy your life in your little bubble then. Putain.
So who's the judgemental one now? "This is why I So~ dislike your kind" LOL.. Glad that you suddenly turned attention on the Taiwan & Tibet issue - cause you're actually are no different fr that guy too. If you find him irritating you can just send him a personal msg to slam him...obviously you're not here for the music, either.
Besides, while I agree Supersam87's a tad long-winded, he did state very clearly today's Japan is very different & he won't begrudge them for what their ancestors did. So it makes no sense for you to accuse him of taring all Japanese with the same brush.
Im am one of Bowie's and Sylvians biggest fans.Commercial Bowie is poor, track back through his albums tracks over the past 44yrs and there are some lyrical masterpieces.Sylvian just draws you in to every song. They are both equal in there own right.
I'm not a drug snob. I love tripp'n it helps me stay level when I do it every so often.
Sylvian is much more personal for me than Bowie, and personally I think he's a much better singer and towers over Bowie as a song writer. Bowie can write hooks, but Sylvian writes uncompromising phylosophy from his soul in every song. Not many artists are that true to themselves. Though I'm sure Sylvian would never want to be compared to Bowie or vice versa. so like I said personal pref. Like what you like.
iii agree that Sylvian kicks Bowies' ass but as far as Drugs are concerned, you obviously don't understand the potential for expansion of consciousness, creativity, etc, etc.....
Can someone tell me the title & year this movie came out, plus the title of this song. I'm confused. Is it Forbidden Colours or Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence? Please help me.
The film is called "Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence," and it was released in 1983. The song is known as "Forbidden Colours" and as "Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence." There's two versions of the song: this version with the lyrics, and an instrumental.
BTW, I'm uploading the film here if anyone wants to watch it (no copyright infringment intended. :) ).

david bowie looks like a lesbian in this movie and i dont think that the love of a lesbian would change one of the strongest cultures in the world. -two kisses on the cheek and a flower for you-
I was 16 when this movie came out. I was eager to see it because I was a big Bowie fan at the time and still am. So when I watch it every so often or listen to the Sakamoto song and sound track it brings back some deep memories. Glad on YouTube we can see the video from it. I did like this movie a lot yet at the same time there is a lot of sadness about this movie so it's kinda melancholy. Another song from the soundtrack of my life. Wish I could go back to circa 1983. Only in the '80s.
Remember i loved the song, hated that Bowie played gay in this movie, but understand it more now, love the song though its an oldie, had forgotten about it, brings back memories from high school..
Great movie, and that no woman appears has one reason, that one maintheme in this movie is about homosexuality, in this times not thinkable in Japan or else in Asia (or somewhere else) I`m not but i can imagine the pressure for all in this times. Thnx Ryuichi Sakamoto, great Composer and Pianist!!!!!!!!!!!!
I would be interested in to hear about bushido/Japanese spirit and what the Japanese believe in. Don't take offence but do the Japanese still believe the emperor is a God. Like they did in WW2?.
Does anyone else think the heavy handed makeup job on some of the main actors detracts from the realism a touch? Just wondering if anyone else was noticing that! Awesome film and Awesome music.. God Bless everyone
No. You may as well criticise the scene of Bowie portraying his characters life prior to his military service - as a senior school student. It was a movie, not a documentary.
You are so right. Especially captain Yonoi's make up. I think the make up artist tried to make Sakamoto looked very oriental (which is so unnecessary. That guy is an oriental guy with oriental look)
Does anyone else think the have handed makeup job on some of the main actors detracts from the realism a touch? Just wondering if anyone else was noticing that! Awesome film and Awesome music.. God Bless everyone
This song never fails to give me goosebumps. Loved the film, it was filmed in my hometown of Auckland. Had to wipe away a tear after watching this classic.

-two kisses on the cheek and a flower for you-
they should have been muppets !

Great movie, and that no woman appears has one reason, that one maintheme in this movie is about homosexuality, in this times not thinkable in Japan or else in Asia (or somewhere else) I`m not but i can imagine the pressure for all in this times. Thnx Ryuichi Sakamoto, great Composer and Pianist!!!!!!!!!!!!

very nostalgic feeling.
I'm a Japanese, I watched this film in a movie theater in high school days and felt very mysterious. and very interested that no woman appear at all.
anyway, longed for coolness of David Bowie.

Before I get into that, there is some information about, "Japanese spirit --bushido-- " that you should know.
akira5150 2 years ago
I would be interested in to hear about bushido/Japanese spirit and what the Japanese believe in. Don't take offence but do the Japanese still believe the emperor is a God. Like they did in WW2?.

Классный фильм, все актеры играют так, что нет слов. Ну а музыка... Рюичи Сакамото не только офигенно красивый, но еще и талантливый.

Does anyone else think the heavy handed makeup job on some of the main actors detracts from the realism a touch? Just wondering if anyone else was noticing that! Awesome film and Awesome music.. God Bless everyone
correction **heavy**
japanrussell 3 years ago 2
No. You may as well criticise the scene of Bowie portraying his characters life prior to his military service - as a senior school student. It was a movie, not a documentary.
GardensOfStone 3 years ago
You are so right. Especially captain Yonoi's make up. I think the make up artist tried to make Sakamoto looked very oriental (which is so unnecessary. That guy is an oriental guy with oriental look)

Good summary of montage, but lacks the scene of the cut of Bowie's hair...
Film unique - wonderful song.

Yes, it is Takeshi Kitano as Captain Hara. Looked very young, didn't he?
