  • The message was for originallove911

  • If a german says holocaust didn't exist, many people would protest. So no sueltes una tamaña mierda, por favor! Let me enjoy the movie without such a crap, all right? Yes I'm a Japanese not a Chinese nor Korean.

  • @hh0413cn 誰ですか?日本語が通じるということは、朝鮮中国在日朝鮮左翼のいずれか。こんなことでいちいちムキになるのはやめる。enjoy the movie,alright?

  • Such a fabulous film & especially the ending that everyone of us should learn from that. we should all live in peace & learn to love each other? well played parts by all of the cast anyway!!!

  • 南京大虐殺は実在しません。

  • @originallove911 The music is a piece of master work. Here is not the place for you to deny the horrible history and brutal acts of Japanese soldiers during WW2.

  • A very nice montage showing David Bowie's ability, not only as a musician, but also as a buffer between cultures. Softening the harsh impact of Eastern society on our own after we had been fed so much hate-ridden propaganda after the war. I believe this film made a huge difference on the way western society perceived Eastern culture post-war.

  • Very very good!!!

  • Another top song from a great film

  • "What are you...an evil spirit? "

    "don't know...not one of yours, i hope"

Brilliant movie.Seen it more than 6 x on the big screen.

  • Good!

  • I've been in war and I guarantee that everyone becomes bestial and inhuman sooner or later, and no matter what country you were born

  • This brings back all of my teenage angst and memories of lying on my bedroom floor with 2 speakers either side of my head with the music so loud and tears rolling down my face! Absolutely a beautiful and moving piece of music - thankyou David and Ryiuichi x

  • Anyone know what the two first chords being played in the intro is?

  • I saw this film when it first came out and it has remained indelibly imprinted on my memory. When it ended I didn't want to leave the theater. The music went on for some time and it was so beautiful.

  • why do i cry everytime i hear this??????

  • this is the song played to a good friend gone over 20 years ago. killed himself.

wild 80ties.!! lose a friend and u know they take a piece of u.

  • @OnanTheBavarian yes of course: such stars in this beautiful film, so many reasons to watch it over and over.

  • Fantastic, beautiful song, and a wonderful movie....

  • I'm Australian and my Grandfather fought against the Japanese as an infantaryman in the 2/48 Btn AIF. It was a great joy that we were able to share this beautiful film together. He said it helped him to understand the enemy he fought so long ago and in the end I saw a tear roll down his cheek, it is a memory I will cherish forever. This is truly a great film. May the dead of both sides rest in peace.

  • very moving comment thank you for sharing that with us x chris from england

  • @ss3cleric

    thank you for your words...

très émouvant de voir qu'un film peut avoir le pouvoir d'ouvrir les esprits.... et que les hommes malgré des combats, des violences terribles, peuvent finir par se comprendre...

  • @ss3cleric

i liked your comments, i also love this film. does make you think? hope you and all of your family are doing well? i am from england, my dad was a submariner, in the navy, but too young when the 2nd w,w. started, but our family did spend a couple of years in "Manly" back in the 60's but i was only about 2ish x

  • @ss3cleric Sorry, but only the Japanese bayoneted little babies during WWII and none of the other combatants did such monstrous acts. No forgiveness from me.

  • @MultiKanut u are obviously dumb enough to think that only the Japs did such horrible thing

  • @MultiKanut you can eat a fat cock, idiot.

  • @ss3cleric

My dearly loved grandfather was a Major in the Royal Artiliary and fought in Burma. He said that he saw some terrible things.Although he never actually put things into plain words. But even amongst the carnage he clearly loved the world around us and as a kid told me about the wild life and the different people he had met during his service. It was only as he grew old and as I grew older that he opened up a bit more.

He was a grand old gent and he would have liked this film.

  • @ss3cleric ..nice, thanks for sharing..

  • @Thetrollmaster2000 you sound like a typical cock-head that this media tends to attract unfortunately. How many wars have you fought in you arrogant prick? Its morons like you that need to be castrated at birth so you do not infect the rest of the world with your vile opinions. May I politely ask to you get fucked and die

  • @ss3cleric u mad bro?

  • @ss3cleric Amen to you sir.

  • @Superssam87,

If you look into history, even the United States does this. If you look into the history of the Vietnam War, our involvement with the Phillipines, and even the Internment camp, these incredulous acts are reflected in each and every one of us.

Evil, like Good, is indiscriminate in who it attempts to influence. It is the the free will of the person to accept it or cast it away.

  • I totally agree. To believe that one nation is most cruel than others, is out of reality

  • @Superssam87: what Japanese army is bestial, but it's nothing different from what German people, Italian people and even British people did (let's ask Australian aboriginals about or Kenya natives). the naked truth is that during wars, civil wars and invasions human beings show their worst side, their destructive power and this will go on until we'll be able to live without oppressing each other (but it seems we are not going to learn this) my empathy is for the victims, wherever and whenever

  • @mistdragonfly living without enemies is of no interest in this world

  • Comment removed

  • @WorldOfSnakes Incredibly true

  • @mistdragonfly

    well said

  • @mistdragonfly Sadly, some of these men fight not to kill but to live for they know if they don't fire first. Their life will end by another men. In a way, War is a fight between politics with in countries, yet the ones who suffer and die are the innocent men trying to protect and live.

  • @mistdragonfly Some of what you say is Very true an that is a fact sadly of life, but don't forget 'some' people an armys did Worse then others. Look up the Rape of Nanking, the POWs camps the young girls forced into sex slavery who were Raped by 80 plus soldiers of the barracks daily. An let's not forget the log factorys (they called them logs) where the locals (occupied lands) were in were used in experiments NONE survived. YH my empathy is for the victims, wherever and whenever!!.

  • Words can't describe how moving this is. Thanks for sharing this.

  • Truly, I agree.... Very emotional brought in this film.. the circumstances, the feelings and .. this war... WHY?

  • As I think, your feeling's the misery and happiness of each other on troops. As for Britain in this movie in fact, never taken prisoner. Respectable civil on Japan, too.

And Forbidden Colours means in Japanese by MISHIMA Yukio, the passion of loving and feeling that men meets each other, in that colors. The background is Emperor's color. So,they could not take the Emperor's suits.

(The Misima is one of famous Japanese novelist. )

  • @feeling7asia ローレンス! ファーゼルクリスマス ご存知かな?

  • i have a question, and i hope someone can answer me. there´s a scene were lt. Ito tells jack celliers, ´´ can you guess, what iám thinking? after he says that jack celliers reply saying, yes i think so, can you? and then lt. Ito punches jack celliers. so why does the japanese punched jack celliers?

  • hmmm it's the asian hierarchy/authority-oriented concept, and Jack Celliers tries to verbally challenge it, that's why the beating.

  • Absolute masterpiece from Oshima, although it has his weak moments...but the strenght of Bowie , Sakamoto and Conti is incredible !

I went to see it over and over again in art houses, because it's better to see it on a big screen.

  • As one of Japanese, I proud Great Britten and Japan.

I regard this PV as having enormous Power. I thought that's preys of each other.(Chivalry and Bushido)

Whatever, I think this movie's poster is genius sincerely.(I'm sorry my not writing of enough English)

  • Strangely, I can sympathise with the Japanese detestation of prisoners of war in WW2. Yes, I am humanitarian but, in war, it is surely right that you should die in battle rather than hang around in a camp for an indefinite period doing manual labour for your enemy.

  • Your lack of empathy astounds me. What the Japanese did to the allied forces (and china) was unimaginable. 12 year old girls raped by 30 men before being shot in front of her mother. Fathers, mothers, sisters, brothers, daughters beheaded, shot, raped indiscriminatly. Today, while japanese views have definatly changed, we should never forget, and I will never understand why the did these horribl acts.

  • @Superssam87

    blah blah blah

  • I have been to singapore several times and have worked with the singaporian army several times (have you done your time yet?). I am glad the majority of your country do not share your views.

  • @Superssam87

Remember, Japanese does not equal to military and government.

  • @cobs1130 :

You know very well in yr heart why I've said what I've said. and no, I'm not Supersam, you're so paranoid, you failed to notice the difference in our writing styles. All I want to say to you is : Sakamoto, an actual Japanese, has more heart and soul than you. For shame..oh wait, I forgot, shame is something you don't feel...so i take it back. Enjoy your life in your little bubble then. Putain.

  • This is why I So~ dislike your kind.

Who you think you are to judge me? Who give you the right?

Because I don't feel sorry, so I should feel shame?

I sympathize Taiwan & Tibet, but not the largest nation in the world.

You all keep harping this war which is real irritating. Shouldn't cultural revolution & Tiananmen Square protest even more ugly?

What is offensive is that guy jump on someone who empathize and he lump the military & civilian together. Obviously he wasn't here for the music.

  • So who's the judgemental one now? "This is why I So~ dislike your kind" LOL.. Glad that you suddenly turned attention on the Taiwan & Tibet issue - cause you're actually are no different fr that guy too. If you find him irritating you can just send him a personal msg to slam him...obviously you're not here for the music, either.

  • Besides, while I agree Supersam87's a tad long-winded, he did state very clearly today's Japan is very different & he won't begrudge them for what their ancestors did. So it makes no sense for you to accuse him of taring all Japanese with the same brush.

  • なんでPV?

  • Im am one of Bowie's and Sylvians biggest fans.Commercial Bowie is poor, track back through his albums tracks over the past 44yrs and there are some lyrical masterpieces.Sylvian just draws you in to every song. They are both equal in there own right.

  • I'm not a drug snob. I love tripp'n it helps me stay level when I do it every so often.

Sylvian is much more personal for me than Bowie, and personally I think he's a much better singer and towers over Bowie as a song writer. Bowie can write hooks, but Sylvian writes uncompromising phylosophy from his soul in every song. Not many artists are that true to themselves. Though I'm sure Sylvian would never want to be compared to Bowie or vice versa. so like I said personal pref. Like what you like.

  • Merry christmas mr lawrence.exectly the same spelling as the song"merry christmas mr lawrence"

  • Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence, is the name of the movie.

  • iii agree that Sylvian kicks Bowies' ass but as far as Drugs are concerned, you obviously don't understand the potential for expansion of consciousness, creativity, etc, etc.....

  • Well thats your opinion, dude.

  • then it would be bowie, you are absolutely right. :P

  • Matter of opinion. ;)

  • I am glad for you loving this song and movie, as Japanese.

  • @feeling7asia

    i love it very much....

  • Anyone had a thought that the beat sounded like Spirt Away

  • And Bowie like his god. ;)

  • Can someone tell me the title & year this movie came out, plus the title of this song. I'm confused. Is it Forbidden Colours or Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence? Please help me.

  • The film is called "Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence," and it was released in 1983. The song is known as "Forbidden Colours" and as "Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence." There's two versions of the song: this version with the lyrics, and an instrumental.

BTW, I'm uploading the film here if anyone wants to watch it (no copyright infringment intended. :) ).

  • the movie is Merry christmas mr. Lorence

    the song is Forbden colors

music by sakamoto sings by david bowie

  • No, no Colonel Yanoi... You're wrong... We're all wrong...

  • love the song ...love the tune ..love the film .....

  • I was 16 when this movie came out. I was eager to see it because I was a big Bowie fan at the time and still am. So when I watch it every so often or listen to the Sakamoto song and sound track it brings back some deep memories. Glad on YouTube we can see the video from it. I did like this movie a lot yet at the same time there is a lot of sadness about this movie so it's kinda melancholy. Another song from the soundtrack of my life. Wish I could go back to circa 1983. Only in the '80s.

  • Ive not seen the film since i was about 8 years old and i didnt really understand it.

but never the less... this song has always been one of my favourites for pretty much my entire life.

its such a fantastic piece of music.

  • It is truly a great film. SOOOOOO great.

I have seen some films of Oshima. This one made me cry soo much

    Great film and great music

  • Brilliant!! thank you

  • great song and great movie indeed. :)

  • Bowie doesnt playd gay, there is a completely differeny thing.

  • Remember i loved the song, hated that Bowie played gay in this movie, but understand it more now, love the song though its an oldie, had forgotten about it, brings back memories from high school..

  • i must admit a great song

  • My love is...forbidden...

  • aT 3:13 it's a strong moment of this movie, love it...

  • is this song really from the movie or not?

  • A great song, but what is this movie trying to express actually?

  • supplement:...and, of course because the most time the movies set is playing inside a prisoners camp! Greetings. 5 of 5

  • AMAZING movie, right up there with Scarface

  • Great movie, and that no woman appears has one reason, that one maintheme in this movie is about homosexuality, in this times not thinkable in Japan or else in Asia (or somewhere else) I`m not but i can imagine the pressure for all in this times. Thnx Ryuichi Sakamoto, great Composer and Pianist!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • very nostalgic feeling.

I'm a Japanese, I watched this film in a movie theater in high school days and felt very mysterious. and very interested that no woman appear at all.

anyway, longed for coolness of David Bowie.

  • This is a gemm!!!!!!

  • I dont know how many times i have watched this movie!!

  • Before I get into that, there is some information about, "Japanese spirit --bushido-- " that you should know.

  • I would be interested in to hear about bushido/Japanese spirit and what the Japanese believe in. Don't take offence but do the Japanese still believe the emperor is a God. Like they did in WW2?.

  • Just now,It's a virtue personified.

Maybe,Just feel like one is missing something.

  • Great song, great music, pity that Sylvian and Sakamoto don't make music together anymore. :(

  • Lost in time? Hey, I saw that movie many, many times! It isn't lost to me!

  • I'm not the biggest fan of the singing, but the music is an orgy to my ears =D

  • david looks sexy in that school uniform!

  • Christchurch could be an orgasmic experience for you.

  • Yes a classic lost in time. The 2 Sylvian and Sakamoto were perfect for the mood of this song.

  • Oshima is a Genius

And this movie is one of the bests!!!

  • great David Sylvian and Sakamoto

  • MY FAVORITE MOVIE TOO!!

  • My F*A*V*O*R*I*T*E* Movie!!!

  • Классный фильм, все актеры играют так, что нет слов. Ну а музыка... Рюичи Сакамото не только офигенно красивый, но еще и талантливый.

  • coño! pero qué le pasa a tu teclado?

  • Eso esta lengua rusa.Estudie lenguas extranjeras....

  • Absolutely Awesome!! well done! :D

  • Does anyone else think the heavy handed makeup job on some of the main actors detracts from the realism a touch? Just wondering if anyone else was noticing that! Awesome film and Awesome music.. God Bless everyone

    correction **heavy**

  • No. You may as well criticise the scene of Bowie portraying his characters life prior to his military service - as a senior school student. It was a movie, not a documentary.

  • You are so right. Especially captain Yonoi's make up. I think the make up artist tried to make Sakamoto looked very oriental (which is so unnecessary. That guy is an oriental guy with oriental look)

  • Yep so am I !

  • Does anyone else think the have handed makeup job on some of the main actors detracts from the realism a touch? Just wondering if anyone else was noticing that! Awesome film and Awesome music.. God Bless everyone

  • Good summary of montage, but lacks the scene of the cut of Bowie's hair...

    Film unique - wonderful song.

  • Is that Takeshi Kitano at 1:10? I'm just curious to know because my Mum saw Zatoichi with him in recently.

  • Yes, it is Takeshi Kitano as Captain Hara. Looked very young, didn't he?

  • A Time. A Place. This takes me back there. I hope it does the same for you.

  • exactly! :) as if it's a moment of my childhood that i remember only the feeling of. very intimate.

  • PURE CLASS;;;;

  • what are they doing to the man in 3:54?

  • There were holding on to him so that hara gun-sou could decapitate him.

  • Zderzenie dwóch cywilizacji,które się wzajemnie nie rozumieją.Muzyka SUPER!

  • Sakamoto es, aparte del actor principal, compositor del tema.

y david sylvian: escuchen el ending de monster (anime), 'for the love of life'

    excelent!

  • i love it!!!!

  • timeless

  • This song never fails to give me goosebumps. Loved the film, it was filmed in my hometown of Auckland. Had to wipe away a tear after watching this classic.

  • p.s. for those who dont know...the japanese official is R.Sakamoto great composer... love his music

  • wonderful movie
