This is such a beautiful former anthem... I can understand that the Soviet times can be a difficult subject in modern day Estonia, but why ban everything and anything that has anything to do with the Estonian SSR, especially a beautiful hymn like this?

as what comes to Soviets getting inside borders of Baltic states, Soviet Union demanded military bases in Baltia and Finland, Finland tried to negotiate and refused some demands, Winter war started and Finland fought and survived even though Finland had small and poorly equipped army, Baltic states had even smaller armies with even poorer equipment, and their leaders were afraid of military might of Soviets so they agreed, it was soldiers from those bases that took control of Baltic states.

@yforcetech afaik americans had an advantage against the british, that was the remoteness of america from britain. finns had one against the soviets, too: the harsh winters and scarce roads (and long distances, though they exist in cccp too) that soviet troops were unfamiliar with. the vietnamese were used to the jungles of indochina, unlike the americans. finland and estonia are indeed quite similar, but finland is way bigger, had more men and had germany as an ally and material supplier.
before anyone starts yelling "Lies!", The known fact is that in summer 1940 NKVD walked in to Estonian primeminister's office and in gunpoint forced him to sign documents to connect Estonia into Soviet Union, next and NKVD officer walked in to office of head of the intelligence deparment of Estonian army, and shot the department head, and soon Red Army and NKVD started to arrest people, shooting thousands and exiling the rest to Siberia.
All this has been documented and only Russia disagrees.

My own professor knew nothing about Estonia's experience in WWII...I had to find a lot of what was going on at the time from my Grandma, who fled the Russians as a child, from Estonia to Danzig in 1941 or so. Even so, I never understood why they would have to flee until more recently.

If they never asked common people if they wanted to be Soviet and Estonians did not want to be such, they should have picked up arms and fought, just like Finns did in 1940. They never picked up arms, so I guess they were OKAY with being part of USSR.
@hitlerkaput1981 news flash, in 1940 some Estonians did start some sort of Guerilla war, and from 1944 through 1953 people from all the baltic countries fought soviets, but with many executed and even more sent to Siberia there weren't many people left who knew how to fight and considered Soviet rule worse than any retribution NKVD could take on civilian population, so resistance wasn't effective enought to force Soviets out of Baltia, but they managed to control some areas all the way to 1953

As Russians as a nation are not guilty of Soviet crimes, the Russia as a state declared itself a continuation of the Soviet Union in international community, with good things such as permanent membership in the Security Council and bad things, such as responsibility for Soviet, especially Stalinist, actions. @yforcetech afaik americans had an advantage against the british, that was the remoteness of america from britain. finns had one against the soviets, too: the harsh winters and scarce roads (and long distances, though they exist in cccp too) that soviet troops were unfamiliar with. the vietnamese were used to the jungles of indochina, unlike the americans. finland and estonia are indeed quite similar, but finland is way bigger, had more men and had germany as an ally and material supplier.

before anyone starts yelling "Lies!", The known fact is that in summer 1940 NKVD walked in to Estonian primeminister's office and in gunpoint forced him to sign documents to connect Estonia into Soviet Union, next and NKVD officer walked in to office of head of the intelligence deparment of Estonian army, and shot the department head, and soon Red Army and NKVD started to arrest people, shooting thousands and exiling the rest to Siberia.
All this has been documented and only Russia disagrees.

@dimapez It's such a sad comment on the state of the education system (or rather, the isolationism therein) here in the U.S. that they simply do not teach those aspects of the war in Europe in history classes. My own professor knew nothing about Estonia's experience in WWII...I had to find a lot of what was going on at the time from my Grandma, who fled the Russians as a child, from Estonia to Danzig in 1941 or so. Even so, I never understood why they would have to flee until more recently.

(continues)...and of those who volunteered most prolly did it because Germans did not allow Estonians nor other Baltics to have their own armies, and they wanted to fight for their own freedom, armed forces of Baltic states had been annexed to Red Army and were elsewhere when war started, so those who volunteered couldn't rely on their trained countrymen to train them in ways of war, the stamp of fascism is employed to undermine the fact that Baltics in German service fought for their freedom.

If they never asked common people if they wanted to be Soviet and Estonians did not want to be such, they should have picked up arms and fought, just like Finns did in 1940. They never picked up arms, so I guess they were OKAY with being part of USSR.

@hitlerkaput1981 news flash, in 1940 some Estonians did start some sort of Guerilla war, and from 1944 through 1953 people from all the baltic countries fought soviets, but with many executed and even more sent to Siberia there weren't many people left who knew how to fight and considered Soviet rule worse than any retribution NKVD could take on civilian population, so resistance wasn't effective enought to force Soviets out of Baltia, but they managed to control some areas all the way to 1953

@hitlerkaput1981 Hello? Haven't you studied history? There was a happening called a collapse of USSR in 1991. Before that the Soviet Union was just way too strong to get rid off. When they had their own revolution raging on their own soil, it was much easier to Estonia to get separated from the USSR ;)

@folladordeprostis Well the life quality was better back then (By that I mean what you could afford for yourself) but communism made us almost a third world country so I doubt they miss that, the only one who do are russians who can't learn anything about this country in 60-70 years that they have lived here.

I am sorry for so many victims of estonian people died by comunists and others from 1940 to 1990, but can you imagine how many MILLIONS of russians died in that same time + from 1917 to 1941???? Problem here is not between Estonian and Russian nation or some religious, ethnic or cultural problem, problem was the same for both of nation, even that sistem makes everything to others to think that all the things are done by russians...All the best for Eesti and their people!

Well, it's not that simple. As Russians as a nation are not guilty of Soviet crimes, the Russia as a state declared itself a continuation of the Soviet Union in international community, with good things such as permanent membership in the Security Council and bad things, such as responsibility for Soviet, especially Stalinist, actions. It doesn't mean much, but saying "sorry, this was bad" would be enough. I understand Russian fear of compensations, but this could to be dealt with strong refusal

Well, Estonia was in USSR because USSR occupied Estonia, no country exept extremely poor one would join USSR and get under rule of Moscow. I agree that nowadays USA has big influence over Estonia, but this is much weaker than it was with Russia in USSR.

lyrics are actually fine..
starts with "Jää kestma kalevite kange rahvas" which is "Long live the strong nation of Estonians", later there comes some Lenin bullshit, but we should of changed the lyrics and kept the melody, coz right now having the same anthem that Finland has is lame.
