You don't have to celebrate his accident, it's always sad if someone dies at a comparatively young age but I think that lots of people in Austria and the surrounding countries are not unhappy that he won't continue his right wing policy now.

Was die emotionalen Kommentare anbelangt, hat sich das Herr Haider selbst zuzuschreiben. Seine politischen Kampagnien waren stets auf billigem Populismus aufgebaut und er scheute keine Beleidigung oder Verleumdung. However what is misunderstood that this man got a stage by media which was not justified. He was "Landeshauptmann" in tiny Kärnten in the tiny Austria. At the end of the day there are hundreds of mayors all over Europe having more impact/ power than him.

True, I mean people were asking themselves yesterday already if this wasn't THE opportunity for the two right-wing parties to reunite (after Jörg Haider himself had split off from the FPÖ to found his own party BZÖ)... We will see what happens in the weeks to come.

Thankyou for this Regina - I was just on my way over to PM you and ask your opinion (I saw the news in a Twitter post).

It's certainly thrown a wildcard into the Austrian political situation, and so bizarre with the timing. It'll be very interesting to see what happens next.

I imagine political parties have a 'Plan B' for these situations, but to expect detailed answers from the guy under those circumstances was pretty harsh.

I agree with everything you had to say about this. Whatever Haider's own politics were, the nazis with whom some people associate him, were able to do what they did because they devalued human life and dignity. Why is that still such a hard lesson to learn?
