The wagons might have gotten bigger and better over time but i'm sure the job hasn't,i'd have loved to have been a lorry driver in those days even with the sheeting and roping!!
@goinghomesomeday1 The engine in the Atkinson is probably a Gardner. They start a lot easier than you would think on the handle. No electrics are required to start an old diesel. Life was slower and more interesting back then. Expectations were less.
@vinylseat - Hello & thanks for your reply and information. I had a look at your video, it is brilliant and the driving is just perfect while reading the information. The gearbox which was fitted to the Atkinson in your video, is that what they called a "crash gearbox".
Back in the late 60's I used to work for a local sweet factory (Bulls Eyes etc) and they used Ford trucks which were still running on petrol! That came to an abrupt end during the fuel crises and when the price of petrol went up
