i think elements of popular music have always been experimental, from the development of the electric guitar and its persona, to grandmaster flash's advancement with breakbeats. and animal collective embody the same spirit as this. they are excellent.

popular music is at one point experimental.
but once people start to like it, similar music is created.
less popular music is all different and all has its own sound or feel.
