  • err wait. they all sing it

  • m. ward and conor are both singing this

  • they probably use the same mic john used.

  • Which Monster sings this? Conor Oberst or M. Ward?

  • @jafonzeiscool both of them i think

  • @CrystalWTHS Thanks

  • @jafonzeiscool i always thought it was jim james

  • I can not fathom how anyone could dis like this band and if you do how can you not respect this as art

  • whos singing??

  • Hi. My name is Sharifah from Malaysia..i just heard this song in youtube when i try to find a suitable song to apply it to young children for dancing and how to be manners with their friends and others. I find that i can use this song to teach them something. :) nice lyrics.

  • Everyone gets dark and the worst part is the way those thoughts can please you

  • the only reason god made gutar pay atention learn

    :)

  • M. Ward, Don't mess with him. He will fuck you up.

  • This does have a very Beatles-ish feel to it doesn't it...

  • @lbk1982 Yes... the song actually reminds "Woman is the Nigger of the World" by J. Lennon.

  • Don't be rude about The Beatles. They revolutionized music.

  • Conor's hat is bitchin in that picture.

  • Dare I say it... a modern day version of The Beatles?

  • @LS1formulation nah, these guys are better haha

  • @changobilly22 i laughed.

  • @Enigmatics2 i believe you hahaha

  • @LS1formulation More like a modern day version of the Traveling Wilburys

  • I just can't like this.

  • I love Conor's shoes in this picture.

  • isnt this song originally done by blue october

  • @rockguitar1200 No, if it doesn't mention self-mutilation then it wasn't Blue October.

  • KILLER BOOTS MAN

  • This band is great. Possibly the best rock album of 2009. It destroys the other hyped-up super group; Them Crooked Vultures. The Dead Weather is very good, but these guys are better.

  • I know I'm getting old but that reminded me of John Lennon

  • @rudee1010 you are NOT getting old :D

  • @rudee1010 YES! It's Woman is the Nigger of the World!!

  • m. ward and conor oberst in one band? YES!

  • best monsters song ?

  • @EliteBeave baby boomer is best song that could possibly be made in history

  • ELO?

  • @milfarm18 Electric Light Orchestra

  • I like this song, but mostly cause it sounds like something ELO influenced.

his voice, the bass, the guitar pattern...anyone else hear it?

  • @glowhobo : totally...round about 1976, front row seats to ELO, mad lineup of cellos, violins, classically trained musicians immersed in rock and Jeff Lynne with that Lennonesque voice other people have mentioned here...you can never go wrong if someone says it's reminiscent of Lennon (like Jet singer gets all the time). Yes, all that you mention does remind me of ELO and I love it, and I did think of the Travelling Wilburys when I saw the Monsters a few nights ago on Austin City Limits...

  • Amazing!!! The greatest super group...buy this album!!! Fantastic!!!

  • Great Song.

Does anyone out there know how to play Mike mogis's guitar solo? ive been trying to figure it out for so long but i cant get it.

  • Its a good song, indeed. But their name is a bit... cocky? Anyway, nice song.

  • @R4F43LZiN i thinks is supposed to be sarcastic, kinda like riffing on the whole monsters of rock idealism

  • I believe it's called "irony"

  • sounds like casadega. like seriously a casadega b-side.

  • I don't know why everyone is arguing... Can't we all agree that this is a good song?

  • damn its just such a good song.

  • @fnupfnup

How come everyone on your channel seems to want to tell you to fuck off? You should start a band called Monsters of Douche. At least it would be more accurate than this bands name.

  • Haha, give up you loser.

  • I guess I should give up after all these great comebacks. Haha. You're an idiot.

@jonygut - It is a good song, I'm sorry my comment started these arguments, I was just throwing my opinion out there, I never meant to offend any of these children.

  • Hey is it just me or does this band sound a little emo to you

  • @johnnyplayer56 Yeah, you could say 'they sound too much like Bright Eyes or Too much like MMJ, fucking ridiculous, it's either a good song or not a good song. And this song is a fucking good song, regardless of genre.

  • @johnnyplayer56

    It's just you.

This band sounds like a rock/folk/blues band based on this song.

This sounds like Indie rock or Indie folk which is a combination of alternative, folk, and rock.

  • just shutup and listen

    8)

  • mortel se titre mr bird

  • Mike Mogis makes this band

  • JESUS CHRIST!!!!!!!!!! All I said was there was a hint of emo. I even said I liked the song. I was not dissing it. Just making a simple observation. I now hate this song just because of all the morons that got offended when I said it was a little emo. FUCK!!!!!!

@brewskhee - Thanks for pointing out that their songs all sound like other bands. FUCK this un original bullshit and all you homos that get offended over someone elses opinion.

  • bengrim420 take a chill pill

  • @bengrim420 Hahahahahahaha. Too funny. If you hate a song just because of all the "morons" that get offended...then you must not like very many songs.

  • I'm not offended, it's these stupid fucks that got offended by my comment. All I said was this band sounds more emo than folk. Back in the day you could make an observation about a band without everyone else getting sand in their pussies.

@1foofighter606 - Don't tell me what to do.

    @benelgermosen - I meant all emo.

  • Fucking poser.

  • Explain to me how I am a poser. Because I don't like think band is folk? That makes me a poser? Fucking retart.

  • Haha, you're a fucking retard.

  • Good comeback.

  • Yes. Properly spelled too.

  • I spelled it that way on purpose you moron. Retart. Retart. R-E-T-A-R-T. It is a combination of retard and tart, which is precisely what you are.

  • @bengrim420

    Haha, nice try idiot.

  • @bengrim420

    The Hangover.. 'Rihtard'

  • Great movie. Zach G was half my inspiration for creation of the word retart.

  • great song

  • It's weird. People say ' emo ' when they mean 'second-wave emo ' or ' post hardcore '. I doubt that people mean Embrace or Sunny Day Real Estate.

  • Everyone STOP trying to classify the damn song and enjoy it. I don't give a flying crap what "era" it sounds like. It's music, it's good. It is meant to be enjoyed, not scrutinized. Jeez. Shut up. It's just a great song. Period.

  • nice

  • Surprisingly catchy melodies, really a great album without any 'filler'.

  • definitely beatles white album era

  • This song sounds like it was written or influenced by Dr. Dog. Even the guitar solo is in the style of Scott McMicken. Probably no surprise since Dr. Dog toured with Jim James and M. Ward. Anyone comparing this to The Beatles should listen to Dr. Dog who are also often compared to The Beatles.

  • Yea...bad examples really bad examples

  • i was already an avoid bright eyes, my morning jacket, and M.ward fan and this is band is an excellent collaboration of so many sounds rolled into one. so for all those bright eyes fans who are disappointed open up your mind a little bit

  • @TheDankAvenger

I can see where you're coming from, but alot of bright eyes fans are more fans of the emo sounds of fevers and mirrors and every day and every night, this is a better listen for fans of cassadega and fans of connor's stuff with the mystic valley band.

I just think it's hard to like all of bright eyes' stuff equally when connor's style has constant changes in it.

  • Exactly.

  • I don't want to diss these guys because this is better than most of the mainstream garbage being released these days, but it kinda sounds like emo music, light on the emo.

  • How does this sound emo?

  • I guess it sounds a little emo to me because its sort of slow and whiny. I feel like the dude might start crying. When I think of folk artists like Woody Guthrie, Kingston Trio, and Bob Dylan, and this does not sound anything like any of that to me. I'm not saying it's not folk or it is emo. Folk in a sense is like punk, it is what each individual wants it to be.

  • The thing about the band is that they have 3 influential artists with 3 different sounds. You can hear it on the album. You know which songs were Obersts', James', or M. Ward's. That is, perhaps, the purest form of folk - multiple influences to create an everlasting sound.

With that said, this song reminds me of the Beatles for some reason.

Also check out Right Place by MoF and Tezmezcal (sp?). The first is kind of country-folk and the second is almost like listening to Grateful Dead.

  • it reminds me of the beatles also. you're not alone. :)

  • They'd be more emo if they followed the emo formula:

    1. soft and whiny

    2. loud and screamy

    3. repeat

Despite their name, I'm not sure if I'd call 'em "Folk" either...

  • I think that's intended.

  • So the Grateful Dead were emo? Listen to Temezcal and tell me you don't hear the Grateful dead in there.

So the Beatles were emo, too? Wow, I thought emo was a new term.

And Bob Dylan? Hmm...I think I found a flaw in your argument and I'll let you figure out the rest.

  • you clearly know nothing about music.

  • i hope you realize emo is bands like fall out boy and panic at the disco and shitty shitty bands like that. and emo is finally DEAD!!

  • @1foofighter606

Panic and Fall Out Boy are not emo. That might be the most ridiculous comment I've ever seen on youtube.

  • i just looked them up and... The first genre listed for each of them is emo. So i guess your wrong!

  • this is deff not bright eyes :(

    come back conor

  • Plenty of artists have multiple projects they work on. I'm pretty sure he's allowed to do what he wants.

  • Very Traveling Wilbury's, me likes it!

  • I like the song... in this photo they look SO PORTLANDERS the way they dress.... but idk where are they from?

  • i know conor is from omaha nebraska

not that im a stalker... XD

    hahah

  • I cant believe mmj was on american dad, that was hilarious

  • Great song

  • "m. ward for president"

  • you go, conor

  • Look online for a copy of the Louisville concert on Halloween. It was A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!

They dressed up as kiss and played their songs after the intermission.

  • 5 STARS ,,,hot song

  • They're awesome! Stockholm 19th of November!

  • fantastic!!!!

  • saw them last night in philly. they were amazing.

  • I'm in love

  • <3 love this

  • Holy shit, these guys are sweet

  • dig it

  • So, judging by the comments below, this band is going to be in Louisville and Chicago one day, Amsterdam the next day, then Toronto the next.

    LOL!

  • Hahahahahaha, that's hilarious. These guys must be wizards.

  • me too

    !!

  • I am seeing them tonight in Toronto.

  • So Am I!

  • I honestly did not think this album would be so great. I feel apart from James none of them actually really had a band mentality. But this is a brilliant and refreshing album, with style to spare

  • i am seeing them tomorrow in amsterdam.

  • ahh i'm seeing them tomorrow in Chicago. I'm so psyched!

  • Awesome. I am seeing them tomorrow in Louisville.

  • seeing them tonight as well

  • This is badass. And yes it does have a Beatles feel. Love it.

  • nice i like it it kind of reminds me a bit of the Beatles

  • sounds like morrrisey

  • Just discovered Monsters of Folk today; "Baby Boomers" was the Starbucks song of the day. I got one for free and I purchased another, and I'll probably purchase more after that. Beatles-esque. I like it.

  • I wished they toured Alberta!! :(

  • So amazing.

  • eatshitoldfert

  • I saw this band the other nite in S.B,Ca. and this band is unbelieveably talented. Absolutely loved the show and it was the first time hearing them.

  • they'll be here in omaha a week from tonight! cant wait!

  • Saw them last night at the Fox theater in Oakland. Just the best folk rock band to come out in ages. They were amazing!

  • Remember when Bob Dylan said there hadn't been a "good" album in the last 25 years?...Well this is the best folk album since the days of Simon and Garfunkel, Dylan, Carole King, etc.

  • I saw them last night. Great show!

  • I'm seeing them too!

  • I'm seeing them on the 17th in Oakland!

  • I'm seriously in love with this song :)

  • I'm seeing them November 13!

  • I'm seeing them the 21st of October!

  • haha, im seeing them the 22nd!

  • AMAZING!!!!!!!!

  • the voices of jim james and win butler are so similar; but also with the voice of david bowie

  • I'm surprised I haven't come across this song before, it's extremely catchy and well constructed. This definitely has( or had, I'm not sure how old it is. While this video is from 2009 it doesn't necessarily mean the song did as well) huge potential. Unfortunately it seems like more often then not truly good tracks go under the radar, and get passed over by shitty artists like lil' wang.

  • Yeah, I just came out at the end of September, 2009.

  • Ah, ok thank you. Hopefully this track finds it's way to some relatively popular radio station's play list rotations. I am sure some of you fans don't want them to become commercial, but hopefully their fan base swells enough to guarantee they are able to put out more albums.

  • It just came out like a month ago.

  • yim yames is a jeenyus

  • jim james, conor oberst, and m. ward are all complete, insufferable douchebags...

but this is still pretty rad.

  • just read the article in the rolling stone about this group and im like ok lets go on youtube :P so far me likee them

  • read about them in rolling stone, dig this band!

  • Does this mean the mystic valley band is done with for good? I'm digging MOF but conor and the mystic valley band was a seriously badass group of musicians

  • i'm just waiting for the last bright eyes album and/or tour.

    jesus i can't wait.

  • why does jim james look homeless!?? i'd still do him...

  • Hey good one. On a scale of one to ten, you're a dumb ass.

  • ha ha that was so stupid!

  • I read in an interview that the manager gave them the name as a joke, and it just kind of stuck.

  • does anyone else think monsters of folk is a crappy name for such brilliant musicians?

  • its really supposed to be a joke they arent trying to have a serious name.

  • who care, doesnt matter if its shitty, its about the music man.

  • Can't believe you said "man" without any sense of irony. Cretin.

  • i didnt say man

  • i got +6....soo ha man, good try man. go fuck urself man. HAHAHA

  • no...

  • well you are a piss face then

  • haha that first drum beat throws me off every time!

  • your the kinda person that would walk into heaven and gawd would personally walk twords you and say "get the fuck out"

  • Well they probably have some great music (and music history books) in hell :) . Lighten up. All I said was that this is not folk music...and it's not. Call it whatever you want. It's not like I said it was terrible or anything.
